Anyone have the distrohopping meme where at the bottom it says something like welcome to familiar operating system etc and there is windows or mac there.
>>107092149>i dont understand this "arch just breaks" memeIt's an achy breaky OS. It just breaks.
>>107092149arch broke ONCE in the ~2 decades i used it (libc package broken for anything that used gettext() iirc). that itself was trivially fixable by rebooting into a live environment and installing a fixed package in a chroot using the outer working pacman from the live environment.any other reported breakage is a literal skill issue.
>>107092107>wordswordswordsI wonder which side of the political spectrum the creator of this image is on.
>>107092607>arch broke ONCE in the ~2 decades i used itOnly one update in 2 decades, eh? Do you run the 4chan server? lol

>>107092107>X window*Laughs in Weyland* Skill issue. I use Arch, BTW.(Honestly, my only issue with Arch is how spartan it can be for Desktop. I get that's the "teh Arch Way™" but really, I have to install the auto-mount hard/solid-disk drive packages instead of it being part of the Desktop Environment(s) packages, really?)>>107092149It's a /g/ meme, same as the "K(DE)rashes" meme. It's outdated. There are a few times (the kernel name change in pacman so you had to manually edit [remove and then update, IIRC] the package) where it COULD break if you update without reading ArchLinux.org's news page, but that's on you for being an idiot and not just doing "patch Tuesdays" like sane folks do and waiting to see what breaks/reading BEFORE you update.
It doesn't break as often as people make it seem. It broke once in my 6 years of usage. Went to the forums and the wiki and found the fix.

>>107093776what's the point when you already have Windows
I use CachyOS, btw
I think I read something extremely retarded in a thread in a different but equally hated board. That you can turn Arch into CachyOS, but it's not possible to turn CachyOS into arch. And that Arch with CachyOS optimizations runs faster than Arch.Am I missing something?
>>107093960Are you saying that this linux can run on a computer without windows underneath it, at all ? As in, without a boot disk, without any drivers, and without any services ?That sounds preposterous to me.If it were true (and I doubt it), then companies would be selling computers without a windows. This clearly is not happening, so there must be some error in your calculations. I hope you realise that windows is more than just Office ? Its a whole system that runs the computer from start to finish, and that is a very difficult thing to acheive. A lot of people dont realise this.Microsoft just spent $9 billion and many years to create 11, so it does not sound reasonable that some new alternative could just snap into existence overnight like that. It would take billions of dollars and a massive effort to achieve. IBM tried, and spent a huge amount of money developing OS/2 but could never keep up with Windows. Apple tried to create their own system for years, but finally gave up recently and moved to Intel and Microsoft. Its just not possible that a freeware like the Linux could be extended to the point where it runs the entire computer fron start to finish, without using some of the more critical parts of windows. Not possible.I think you need to re-examine your assumptions.

>>107094151There's a few reasons why it could break for some:1. Installing garbage from the AUR nobody knows about without checking2. Doing partial updates3. Pretending to use arch while using manjaro
>>107091976just run a btrfs filesystem and timeshiftif shit breaks just roll back>>107092107its not THAT time consuming, it just requires setup time. the whole point of arch is ricing your own setup which means time investment upfront but you can have x5 times the speed after its set up. if you dont like that just get a prericed arch, omarchy is legitimately very good
>>107092107fpbp/thread
>>107091976Just install CachyOS and be done with it.
>>10709415199% of the time Arch breaks it's user error, and I'm being generous and not counting the failure to follow "Manual intervention required" as user error.

>>107094315Why not an immutable distro like bazzite?
>>107094151op is a wintard who thinksupdate = breakagesotoo many updates = too many breakagesit's not any deeper than that. people just underestimate how tech illiterate the average /g/eet is, this includes the average /g/eets themselves.it is often the blind conversing with the blind, with each side thinking the other has the eyesight of an eagle.
>>107094209>just run a btrfs filesystem and timeshiftThis is mostly the best solution for breaking on linux. I'd say even better than relying on using some immutable distro. However if something breaks because of anything user related you're kinda fucked. You have to figure out what to delete or replace in your home folder. In a situation where, for instance, you decided to first try GNOME, then KDE, KDE decides to plant shitstains all over /home and change any settings related to gtk as well. You're not reverting that back through rolling back unless you are a madman and you take snapshots of your /home subvolume. "Just delete everything" isn't ideal either, some shit doesn't just regenerate.
>>107094605I'm not a big gamer but afaik Cachy has better performance than Bazzite due to kernel optimizations. In my opinion, it's just a matter of which you prefer, Arch or Fedora. We're talking about Arch here so...
>>107094606I think there's a big misconception about how frequently should someone update their system on arch. Basically you can, and you -will- see updates available multiple times a day even if you don't have a big selection of packages installed, but that doesn't mean you can't just fucking do it once a week like a normal person. Also that people don't know that yes, you can set up arch and derivatives to use "offline" upgrades in the same fashion some distros like Fedora do by following certain defaults. If you don't want to install those updates while you're using the system, you don't need to.
>>107094647i'm well aware. i just don't get into details, because it would be wasted on retards.% tail -1 /var/log/pacman.log[2025-10-23T20:59:26+0100] [ALPM] running '30-systemd-update.hook'...
% tail -1 /var/log/pacman.log[2025-10-23T20:59:26+0100] [ALPM] running '30-systemd-update.hook'...
>>107092107Literally the case.
>>107092107I mean, folks... where's the lie?
>>107091976I'll be honest, I don't like that on Arch I am basically forced into a full system upgrade every week if I decide to install a new program. It's either that or a partial upgrade, which you're not supposed to do.
>>107094832While it's worthy of criticism1. Ideally you wouldn't have to install new programs frequently enough2. A full system upgrade doesn't often take that much time
>>107094608>I'd say even better than relying on using some immutable distro.no its not immutable is far more 'unbreakable' (ofc anything is breakable if you force it but if you use it as intended its 99.99% unbreakable where's a normal arch setup is maybe 70%)>>107094608>you decided to first try GNOME, then KDE, KDE decides to plant shitstains all over /home and change any settings related to gtk as well. You're not reverting that back through rolling back unless you are a madman and you take snapshots of your /home subvolume.it depends on how you use it but yea snapshotting that too is a good idea (i have a seperate drive i use for shit like big 50gb movie files/torrents... so that might change depending on your setup). for this use case an immutable system is actually very good for example if you're using atomic fedora gnome and wanna go tiling mode you can 'rebase' between fedora silverblue and fedora sericea (running sway) fairly seamlessly where the only difference from a clean install would be some flatpaks that come default on specific DE versions
>>107092107i don't even use arch but whoever made this spent more time on it than an arch user would on fixing their shit in a few months
