I'll second this anon's suggestion - it's free to try and you'll be shocked how far lossy codecs have come if you wrote them off during the Limewire era. There is one caveat with opus though (at least for me) - some programs spit out a file that's a bit quieter than the original. It can get confusing when you get into the weeds with replay gain and all that jazz. I don't have a huge library so archiving with flac is not an issue for me and I use HE-AAC for mobile use (just transcode as I go when I get a new album and drop it onto my phone). I find that HE-AAC also sounds great at lower bitrates and it doesn't seem to have the volume issue that opus does for me, not to mention wider compatibility. YMMV of course.

Not him and it could be placebo but I believe I can pick out the occasional high frequency artifact at 128kbps when I listen on my home stereo. Haven't done a "proper" blind test. If space isn't an issue I'd say go for a slightly higher bitrate than the bare minimum for transparency just to be safe but the hifi police aren't going to take your gear if you encode at or below 128. Also if this is for mobile use 128 is perfectly fine.
