You're not still downloading software the old fashioned way, right /g/ents?

Of course not. I switched to rpm in like 1999 and then deb in 2004.

Don't listen to the shills, retard.

>>107094792
Yes, they do, anon. Instead of installing software like grownups, they type frantically in their little terminals, praying to RMS that their hobbyOS will not get upset and poopoo itself. They make their lives more difficult on purpose - so they can feel like big boy hackers from movies. Every linuxoid feels like Neo when he successfully updates his text editor.

package managers are the asshats of the software world as are most apps

I will never use any Windows more recent than 7, and it can't access the Microsoft Store.
Also, a big FUCK YOU to app stores anyway.
What they are trying to do is closing down Windows like iOS.

it fucking sucks it spawns windows you have to click through you can't run update all and go take a shit

I have my collection of portable apps. Installers are an outdated way of running applications.

winget is very convenient for me

And this windows package manager has repo's?
>>

Looks like you can add other repos not just Microsoft’s, https://www.rimo3.com/blog/demystifying-winget-understanding-security-sources-and-comparisons
>>
>>107096420
but the portable apps are fine tuned for someone elses system. The installer converts them to run seamlessly on yours.
>>
>>107097037
Never had a problem with basic software and the performance was always identical. Only complex software may break on newer versions of windblows like ms office for example. My philosophy is simplicity and if something doesn't work well as a portable I simply replace it with better software that just works.

oops

Afaik there's a way to install it through the store without paying anything.

aren't the windows "package managers" just downloading the exe from the manufacturer's website and installing it? doesn't sound like a package manager for me

yes

it pretends to be one using your installed programs list. basically moving install/unistall from a gui to a cli. it's cringe.

yeah, we get it. windows 7 is the last real windows. everything after it is just pajeets copypasting ideas from linux and "embracing" open sores

Package Managers are the worst aspect of Linux and have held the desktop back decades.
>>
>>107098192
Linux shotguns a billion executables and config files throughout your system in a way which makes things impossible to install and uninstall by hand. It's also generally speaking impossible to properly uninstall anything reasonably complex on Linux.
Entire system wipe is necessary.
>>
>>107097037
Literally not true in the slightest.
The only possible gain you could get from an 'installer' is if it compiled the software for your CPU architecture. But nobody does that because compilers are slow, and compilers are slow because LLVM is garbage.

Compilers are slow because retards insist on having one translation unit per source file, so even the smallest C file takes a second to compile and all that time is spent on processing the includes.

Take the .c file include pill.
>>
>>107101170
This is true. Something to note, wildcarding all of your c files into one compiler invocation speeds things up too. Not as much as a single compilation unit, but significantly faster than the cmake bloat of writing out a billion .o files.
>>
>>107094866
Another seething brainlet filtered via the basics of computing
>>
>>107101202
package managers are a ''''solution'''' in search of a problem. They have nothing to do with computing and everything to do with ugly bureaucracy.
>>
>>107094551
I Only download apps directly from autodesk and adobe at the time of Windows installation, and then the computer never goes online again and I don’t install any other software. Every six months I fresh reinstall. That’s the only way I let fucking windows run.
>>
>>107101038
At what exactly has Microsoft got to do with the licensing fees of a proprietary patented codec?
>>
>>107098277
This mumbo jumbo makes no fucking sense lintroon, just tell me where I can get the exe
>>
Why do people hate package managers? Most download and install exes do similar things but with more steps on the user's part. Is it the install location/setup wizard stuff?
>>
>>107094551
And it's absolute dog shit
>>
>>107101362
They're retarded. They know zero about computing basically. These are the same people who don't understand library dependencies, security, safe uninstall, none of that. All they know is that's what Windows does so it must be correct.

That said Windows package manager sucks.
>>
>>107101210
Words of a complete retard
>>
>>107101137
Lol this retard thinks windows applications are properly uninstalled and also believes it can't be properly uninstalled in Linux. 100% retardation.
