Making the main post since there isn't one here.

>Interviewing
Be good at Leetcode and projects, but also work on soft skills.

>Employment
If you really can't find a tech job and you're no longer in school etc., try for McJobs, since even those look better than unemployment. Worst case scenario, like nearing homelessness, enlist in the military (though this'll only work if you're physically ept)

>Grad school
Could be another option to re-qualify for internships and newgrad, though only do this if you know you're actually qualified and just got unlucky, vs. genuinely unqualified.

I haven't gotten a single interview. The furthest I got was a phone screen from a recruitment agency I contacted weeks before, and despite connecting on LinkedIn there was no followup after that and an email. I did secure an internship but its unpaid. I now have 4 months of internship experience that is still ongoing and still nothing. Recent CS grad (graduated with >3.5 GPA in May).

It's quite puzzling, some friends who I previously had to carry through courses and clearly sucked at math and coding have secured Fortune 500 jobs (especially some incompetent women).
>>
>>107102869
OP here. Am still a senior, and at a T50 uni. Still no job offer tho. Actually do have PT exp pertaining to CS but still nothing major or at a major company.
>>
Would link to my previous reply but OP fucked up or something and I'm not searching the archives. I'm the guy who got ghosted after getting an informal offer through email. The email said if I reply that I want the position he would send a contract. Then never got a response. I am well aware that chances are approaching zero, but he had been so positive previously I am holding out hop something weird happened with messaging. I gave it until today in case he reached out after the weekend but now I am going to attempt contact through linkedin under "what do I have to lose" and if he really did ghost me after extending an offer and my attempts at reaching him are annoying him that's fine with me.

Thoughts on trying to message the company vs sending an invite to the guy first than trying to message him. The company is very small and he controls many of the emails, I have no doubt he is the owner of the company's linkedin.

8mo out from an engineering degree, BSc. Got interviews. Never got hired. Never got work experience. Can't get experience without getting hired. Can't get hired without experience, even with an inside connection. I am competent, but everyone always hires the 30-something retarded army man instead of the 20-something fresh grad. Why did I spend all those years studying if the reward was getting talked down to and rejected?

>recommending a a book of private notes written by a literal emperor to a bunch of displaced people
I hate this meme.
Stoicism was a philosophy for the aristocracy, not for the plebs.

Recommending Meditations to people who are exhausted and displaced is a bit ironic when you remember what it actually is. It is the private journal of an emperor, the most powerful man on earth telling himself to endure the burdens of unimaginable privilege.

Stoicism wasn’t designed as a philosophy of liberation. Historically it functioned as a toolkit for the aristocracy. A way for rulers and elite bureaucrats to keep their inner composure while maintaining the social order. For someone living at the bottom, its core message becomes the following.

"Don’t resent your circumstances. Don’t challenge authority. Accept the world as it is."

For the plebeian, this is basically a philosophy of quiet defeat.

There are other philosophical traditions that offer resilience without affirming the status quo, and that actually validate righteous anger and the desire for material justice. Stoicism is great for emotional discipline, but it was never meant to empower the powerless.

Essential workers and people who install and maintain physical infrastructure. Companies nominally create some of that infrastructure, but it's a lottery if you are going to actually help them do that and not just create abstract value for the company by making internal slides for alignment of corporate charkras.
The "easiest" to get into is probably amazon delivery driver but it's a tough job suitable only for browns with their superior physical characteristics and large swinging pendulous gloriously musky, lightly misted with fragrant perspiration, chocolate nuts.

An alternative to military if you have a clean driving record is Trucking.

Better pay and lower commitment, there's companies that offer training like Scheider, Knight, Werner, or Roehl. The numbers vary but usually it's 12 months of work to get a free CDL or you can repay them $1,000-$3,000 and leave immediately.

Free bus ride down to their headquarters, free hotel while you're training (with a roommate usually)

Ask a lot of questions and shop around different companies. They're always hiring because drivers are always getting sick of being OTR after the adventure wears off.

You gave your time as charity to people who couldn’t pay you back. If you’re going to help people in a profession, ESPECIALLY in school, it needs to be in a way that nets you recognition for the effort. Any time spent on undocumented charity is as good as time on video games and weed to employers.

Pretty good filter of who is in need, if you show up on that list you're not.

Military is a springboard for both huge org design, and introduction to government and politics for most that join. If they have a security clearance that basically pays for their salary in most cases, and makes you more eligible for securing a gov contract that pays reddit gold and gets the stock price going. You can be 17 yo and join the military and get a Top Secret, get trained in how to manage networks, fly aircraft, do RF related stuff for airspace or in space, or just learn a trade. You get free housing, food, clothing, and a paycheck. It's a life hack if you don't have anything going on locally, can't afford to move, and want to start over somewhere else with new skills for a profit.

It depends on what you're refering to when talking about a "job".

I do have a professional calling, a vocation. A raison d etre. An Ikigai. One that i'm recognized for by my peers as well.

I would not call it a "job", however.

A "job" is slop you clock in to so you can pay the bills.

A vocation, in stark contrast to the above, is reflecting the innermost core of one's very soul

Mid-to-late 40's aged technology pro here. After nearly 20 years of computer programming, I ended up between jobs and nobody would hire me anymore for anything in the entire tech sector. Not programming, not admin work, not lead work....nada. Then I started applying for other non-tech job openings and couldn't land those either. No interviews, much less getting hired. Ultimately ended up getting "lucky" and landed a job delivering pizza that paid around 13 per hour on average after tips. Had to answer to assistant managers less than half my age who had an superiority complex since they had the luxury job of making the pizza and sending the drivers home early during the down time for slightly more money than we earned. We were considered idiots for voluntarily killing our cars off while getting paid less than they were getting paid, and these brats couldn't be convinced that the world simply didn't want to hire us anymore; they just wrote the drivers off as lazy idiots and treated us accordingly. I eventually got the hell out of there and away from these fuckheads after about 6 months of tolerating their shit and started doing ride-share work. I still can't get hired doing anything else. Doesn't matter what job it is; everyone wants prior experience. Can't get out of the paradox of not being able to get experience because I don't already have experience. Meanwhile I'm just watching the mileage meter on my car climb in dread, knowing the car will eventually die and I won't be able to afford to buy another one because the job doesn't pay enough to save up money to buy another car while getting my bills paid. If I use a rental car, I won't be able to pay for basic necessities. Getting trained up with more certs and/or a masters degree doesn't seem wise; I'll just end up in student loan debt and still won't be getting hired due to age-ism in hiring practices. Fuck this new day and age. It sucks.

Had to screen applications for an entry level position a high school student could do, and well over half of the 70+ applicants have master/phd. They went straight to the trash because why the fuck would someone so overqualified apply for an entry level role? You could easily land a job that makes 5-10x the pay, why would you waste my fucking time applying for a job you would obviously ditch in a month?
>>
Holy shit I just had a great idea. You know how it's annoying when you get a 20 dollar gift card and you buy something worth 18 and then you throw away the gift card with 2 dollars on it? Well what if there were gift cards where like you can charge it once and it's linked to the gifter's bank account and you can charge it once up to the set limit and thats how much is charged to the card and the rest goes back to the gifters bank account?
>>
>>107115839

Because they can't land a job that makes 5×10 the pay. You're lying. A PhD guy without much work experience doesn't land 300k job starting. He needs an entry level job.
>>

>>
>>107116187
No, just has a PhD, you retard. It's called having a PhD. You're a scientist and are smart but still need a little of time to learn how to work. Maybe you just need money.
A PhD is not a ticket to 300k.

>>107116207
Because it's just 3 or 4 years of experience, it's not an executive MBA from Harvard. They don't teach you to make 300k a year in a PhD. It just makes you more qualified for research and technical roles.
>>
>>107116186
That’s the purpose but that doesn’t mean you’re handed a high paying job the second you graduate. It’s often about making money in a field you are actually skilled at while you try to find a more permanent position. For some bizarre reason companies actually take their time making decisions when the salary is high and people can’t sit around doing nothing until they land a good position

Someone with a PhD applying for an entry-level job signals failure. It means years of study produced nothing of market value. If they couldn’t turn that degree into work, it’s because they lack initiative or relevance.
Hiring them is a risk and not because they’ll leave, but because they already proved they can’t function outside academia.
>>
>>107116359
No it signals a career change. Like a software engineer might be tired of that and he might want to do data engineering so he applies for a data engineering position.
Then he gets rejected because people think he's overqualified.
>Dude you're too qualified with a PhD to copy paste SQL, therefore we're gonna hire the barely literate 80 IQ guy with a 2.0 GPA
>>
>>107115839
You recruiters are incompetent, you only fear him because you think you can't control him.
>>
>>107116421
A career change still requires proof of transferable skill, not a title. If someone spent years on a PhD and ended up applying for work that a junior can do, it shows they’ve got no relevant output to offer. The market doesn’t owe them another shot just because they got bored of their old path
>>
>>107116448
The market doesn't owe anyone anything though. Jobs have to be clawed through lies and indecency. I guess you gotta omit your PhD if it will hurt your chances and pretend to be a low level goon hiding your power level.
>>
>>107111667
Be firm and consistent. It’s hard to get out of the headspace of “the lesser” when applying but they’re ultimately looking for someone that can communicate effectively; part of effective communication is holding others accountable to your agreements. If they said they’d contact you within the week, continue to remind them unapologetically. Not insinuating or anything, just a direct “checking in on our previous conversation, are you still interested in proceeding?”
>>
>>107116539
That's right! Make sure to meet them in person and give a firm handshake! Don't take no for an answer! Hiring managers love it when hundreds of applicants pester them with "AM I HIRED YET????????" messages every time they check their email or voicemail!
>>
>>107116487

You have to target and adjust your CV for each job. When your CV can be 5 pages like mine excluding degrees and certificates, you have to choose what you put on the one page. Only the top 3 jobs, only the latest degree, only the names of the certificates and only the best skills.
>>

>>107116569
Right, hiring managers filter through hundreds of applicants, so if they don’t get back to you within a reasonable timeframe you need to remind them as they have probably forgotten about their agreement with you. You’re helping them do their job, if you word it neutrally and they take offense to this reminder of your existence you weren’t getting the job anyway.

since 2020 every single person under the age of 55 decided they want to do tech like the tiktok videos with women doing exactly 0 hours of work a day. because of that, it inflated the number of graduates to many times the amount of available jobs. as a result, most of the people that got a cs degree aren't able to get a job in the field at all. its also compounded by 40% of the domestic jobs being held by immigrants and offshoring.

but if you are a genz boss in a mini you can sign up for the military and get your security clearance today and make 400k starting. they even give you breakfast in bed. why arent you joining the military today anons? its free money.

Graduated with degree last year, bachelors in IT. Six certifications and 2 years of internship experiencing sysadmin'ing. I am now looking to become a janitor for $15/hr because how it's impossible to find a job that pays reasonable for the expectations it puts forward.

Last serious job offer was for a hospital that pays $12/hr for IT support, wants me to drive my personal vehicle from site to site to fix clinic hardware, while also providing support for main location. Even though I said yes, they rejected me for not having enough experience.

Tried it. Didn't work. Some of them are now displaced too in fact and they're not getting hired either.

ON AN UNRELATED NOTE:
One thing I've come to wake up and realize after near 20 years in programming followed by 2+ years of being displaced from the tech sector is that this line of work kinda sucks. Think about it: You watch your life go by sitting in a chair in a box, staring into a few other boxes (screens) and hitting a bunch of little boxes (keys on a keyboard) and you're for the most part boxed in either via a cubicle or an office or a home office. Pays well, ruins your health, turns you into a recluse, and it doesn't really lead to great interpersonal relationships, and doesn't boost your chances in the dating world at all. Companies even have policies forbidding these folks from dating one another outside work. WTF? Its not like computer nerds are chick magnets. Its like you're totally closed off and cut off from being human. So ya, being displaced kinda feels like being unplugged from the Matrix and you realize "Holy shit, maybe getting into this line of work wasn't such a great idea after all". But its too late cuz now not only are you older and still single, but also the entire job sector just showed its age-ism and booted you right out the door with not even so much as a "thank you" nor an invitation to come back and do anything else, and you're stuck doing rideshare work or whatever other low paying job you can score. Maybe IT work as a whole just FUCKING SUCKS but we don't snap out of it and realize it until its too late and we're sitting there in our mid-to-late 40's in age rethinking our lives, wishing we could go back and be younger again and pick a different fucking career.

Fucking nonce, you could be raking in tens of thousands every month making your own products/websites, instead you choose to sit there like a mopey retard wondering why life is flashing before your eyes.

Who cares man, who cares?
Every single one of us lost, a long time ago.
We all PRAY to the machine, we PRAY to the devil, we PRAY to this economic system.
We are gonna torture ourselves over something that we don't understand?
With words that can be turned against us at a moment's notice?
We are gonna do that for the rest of our lives, as if we had the first idea what we are talking about?
You don't have to torture yourself like that. Why would you? Why?
>BECAUSE YOU HAVE TO
>YES YES, YOU HAVE TO, OK?
>HEY, YOU HAVE TO DO YOUR BIT PAL
>HEY
>HEY, ITS ALWAYS BEEN LIKE THIS, OKAY?
>I HAVE SUFFERED, SO YOU MUST SUFFER TOO!
Nigger, please.

idk i like IT and if you are a gayboi tech is sexy or at least interesting to some

the only thing i dont like is not being allowed to poke and prod (poke prod) even when the real engineers don't; if the pipeline really was IT > Local Network Engineering > SW Engineering > Le Ebin Le Cloude Engineer'ing like (((THEY))) promise to the young then it would be fine

i unironically wish they still produced this type of vehicle and that i could buy one and have it properly registered for road use. they are absolutely fucking sick and i love them so much, where i work now has a fleet of those Kubota work vehicle things that are basically a cabin bolted to an ATV and i am hella jealous (and would buy one myself if I could get plates for it but it is still just a little too big for my uses)

I think a lot of your critiques of tech are valid, so the high pay is justified

I've had these thoughts in my mid 30s but I need to pay my mortgage so don't like to dwell on it too much. Also most developers I've met tend to be married with children

If you work in tech, ideally you don't spend all your free time playing vidya or fucking around much on the computer, you should be pretty much devoting all your hobby time to physical activity to offset the sedentism of your job. Of course, this often doesn't happen because you got into this job for some appealing reason like not having to talk to many people or you like working with computers in the first place, it's something you kinda gotta learn and adapt to later

honestly i feel like ive met very few tech people who don't have at least a few non-normie hobbies. ideally the job itself will have some sovl to it but there's always taking up archery or something. and even if the job sucks it should at least have novel problems. if you're genuinely never seeing anything new or challenging but not being promoted then your job is a bullshit job and you are not as valuable to the world as you think

I guess if you're a student

I wouldn't use NestJS personally it's gay af just use a real language and real framework ike C#/.NET or Java/Spring, Angular and .NET are used together because Angular is a FE framework that uses a lot of OO patterns that Java/.NET developers are familiar with, NestJS is just bloatware modeled off Angular/Java Spring

If you think you need NestJS, you probably are better off ditching NodeJS entirely

Serious question: how is that even possible? I went to a pretty cheap community college and my student loans would maybe total 40k ish. Has education costs actually COMPLETELY doubled for zoomies? That's nuts!

>>
>>107119218
>Has education costs actually COMPLETELY doubled for zoomies?
Try tripled. Colleges realized lenders will loan out literally anything college kids ask for, and proceeded to gouge the fuck out of tuition and books. It's all a giant scam. You'd be better off spending a couple hundred bucks on certifications like other anons did, plus you'd save years of going to classes and being subjected to the brainwashing of douchey liberal arts professors you're REQUIRED to attend as part of a core curriculum for computer science (????????????).

Made it to round 2 for an IT helpdesk position, basically fixing software issues for university students and faculty who come in with laptops that aren't working.

I basically lied to get this interview, I actually have 0 helpdesk experience despite claiming I do. I've never used Jira or Active Directory.

In the first round they asked me how I'd diagnose and fix a computer not connecting to the internet. I did the whole spiel with switching networks and resetting drivers and I guess they liked it.

What should I expect for round 2? The interview is today. If I get the job, I'll report back here.
