The son of Jack Tramiel, Leonard, along with the Commodore retro community, have secured all 47 original trademarks. Commodore is back with modern hardware in a retro-inspired chassis, and a new Linux-based OS, Commodore OS Vision 3.0, based around the same principles that made the original Commodore appealing for enthusiasts and hobby programmers. While Commodore becoming an industry player again is very unlikely, and they're clearly leveraging nostalgia to make a buck, it's interesting to see the company necro'd from the ether. What does /g/ think about the return of Commodore?
i like doing pc-like computing via mister since there's less spyware hardware

> Powered by a FPGA recreation of the original motherboard> $299 MSRP...you can dumpster-dive at any uni and pick up multiple FPGAs for free. You can buy an ESP32 for about $3; it'll have more MIPS, memory, and utility than this thing
>>107115552Wow I'm sure basedlennials will go wild for this shit while the rest of the world continues on with their life.

>>107115552I really don't see where this could actually go. I can only see them basically fishing for nostalgiabucks. What else are they going to even do as a company?
>>107116895You're thinking of Gen X. Millennials do not give a shit about Commodore.
>>107116993Yes, genx or boomers.>>107116988It's an attempted cash grab from the audience that buys anbernic shit.

didnt they already do an fpgacommodore??
>>107116993What even happened here?
>>107115552You already nailed it OP. It's going to flop.Hey, let's see how much money we can make off these LGR Fanboys and Greybeards by rehashing all of our old crap into some stupid raspberry pi clone with a C64 emulator. They need to focus on making a useful minimalist OS, that would be cool. Instead they'll market the c64 again. Dross.
>>107115552>Commodore is back with modern hardware in a retro-inspired chassis, and a new Linux-based OS, Commodore OS Vision 3.0, >based around the same principles that made the original Commodore appealing for enthusiasts and hobby programmers. Those two halves of the sentence aren't really compatible with each other. The original Commodore wasn't about being "retro". It looked like that because it was the norm back then. It was the cost efficient and logical design back then. The original Commodore didn't use a unix insipired OS originally made for mainframes, because it was a PERSONAL COMPUTER in it's purest form. Nothing against Linux, but by design it's the polar opposite of what Commodore was.The original Commodore didn't just use "modern" hardware either. It used unique hardware. That was particular true with the Amiga. Nobody needs another x86/ARM linux box.

>>107115552I don't understand why you're trying to pass off the Linux thing as their big comeback product. That's a free Linux distro made by a fan being sold with a custom ITX case. Commodore isn't making it.Their comeback product is the C64U which will ship soon, and then from next year they plan to do new products instead of just leveraging nostalgia. So much of what you wrote in your post is incorrect to the point that I'm convinced you're either an AI or an Indian and I'm not sure which is worse.
>>107115574Which core, and what exactly are you doing with it? The only computer cores I've really used are MSX, C64, and Apple II.
>>107115552Custom chips and open architecture or it's garbage.Doesn't have to be competitive, just unpozzed by corporate spyslop and allow full, unrestricted, ring zero access to hardware under the OS of my choice, including none.
>>107115552>>107121034>no mention of amiga propertiesruh rooh, shaggy. >>107121221despite bold claims of>this is not a replica>this is no emulationthey're going to pump out old slop but with 2025 enhancements until they make enough money.. i assume. and no amiga shit. but good on them anyway. i would love to see the return to making unique computers.
>>107118963This. If you wanted to risk legal action, anyone could also make a "Commodore" by this definition (i.e. stick the trademark on it).
I, for one, welcome our new Commodore 64 Overlords.
>>107118963they should have brought back commodore as a cheap manufacturer of pcs (computers for the masses or whatever that jew said) instead of this shit retro fag stuff didn't commodore make pc clones back in the day too

>>107125819You do realize that every other major computer company before the "enshitiffication" died because of intel unparalleled (albeit extremely crappy and insecure) CPU development right? That everyone had to adapt and use x86+windows or linux shitty OSes to survive? They're not going to compete with intel and windows by making their own fab with their own architecture and OS. It wasn't feasible 20 years ago it isn't certainly feasible now. The only target they have is retro enthusiasts with x86 or ARM mock ups. Not suprised they already announced using linux of course. It WILL be a shitty product by default, the best you can hope is that they will at least use the good kind of material from that age for the chassis, but i doubt it.
