My VR broke in 2023 or 2024; I don't quite remember. I haven't been very active in the VR community since then, but it seems like VR is dying. I wouldn't say it's fully dead but it's not how it used to be.

At first it was all cool and amazing, but now it's kind of boring and stale. Even before my VR broke, I could feel it nearing that point of “Wow, this is pretty ass.” Maybe it's the games? Perhaps it's the VR headset itself? I'm not sure. Does anybody know what caused some decline in the VR space?

Zuckerberg.

It's too much hassle. I just got my first headset. There are some great games, and I'm enjoying the novelty of it. However, it's more effort to set up and after 30 minutes I need a break. In a couple months I'll probably be done with it and sell the thing or box it up in a closet.

No free trial like on Steam. You have to gamble $100 on whether the game's going to be ass or not which is kind of insane if you sit down and think about it.

Ive bought quest games but im kind of retarded.

never played it but I will guess the circlejerks ruined it

literally no company can afford to lose money in this economy on VR experiments, we only have flat to VR mods to play

Zuck bet the farm on Horizon being the next Facebook, killing Oculus in the process. The hardware is great, passthrough was good enough to make a laughing stock out of the AVP and stuff like hand tracking and IOBT is excellent. But it's all stuck behind garbage software that doesn't want you to leave the Horizon ecosystem.

HTC lost their partnership with Valve, and now HTC make wholly mediocre headsets while Valve are dragging their heels releasing a follow up to the excellent but dated Index.

Games were ticking along fine at one point, but again Zuck fucked it all up. He bought every VR dev, told them to cancel their projects, and proceeded to fuck all with them.

Imagine a world without the Zuck

I still often use my Quest3 and everytime I'm thinking how much potential they're squandering with that dogshit software.
Literally 3 snapped windows with a fucking macOS style dock, are you fucking serious? This is the future of computing?
Experiment holy fucking shit, there are 3 daily active users you'll anger with constant changes at most, who gives a shit.

I just use it for watching porn on bigscreen. Someone needs to make an open source competitor to bigscreen.
