>No manufacturing

Why not?

because it would have worse quality than china while also having a higher price
holden cars for example suck major balls, pieces of absolute junk

Its economy is on its last legs. There is no point doing anything of any worth here.

neoliberalism koolaid making government funded R&D or government support of industry taboo
overpriced currency due to mining exports
almost all private investment going into the housing market via the big 4 banks
far away from export markets
expensive energy due to energy grid privatization
conservative party that hates unions and union jobs

There's some inspection equipment that my company sells that used to be made by a small, family-owned company in Australia. Their equipment was extremely sturdy and could literally last for decades with only minor fixes here and there. Because it was so simply designed, it was also very easy to reliably repair.
A few years ago, this company got acquired by some gay Taiwanese company that decided just to switch their entire components for cheap Chinese and Taiwanese ones and stopped supplying us with spare sparts. In addition, they intentionally added some minor changes to their products' internal design that made it almost impossible to repair them. We even tried to see if we could get spare parts from some other supplier, but most of the key parts were custom-made, so it was downright impossible.

In conclusion, fuck the Chinese (both mainlanders and the island Chinese). They're a bunch of greedy cunts just like Israeli Jews and have screwed over everything good Australia ever had.

With Jeets and Chinks, everything sinks.

High import costs seems like a good reason to have domestic production.
>>
35% of aussie ASX200 share market is financials (mostly banks, mostly residential real estate)
vs 13% of the US S&P 500
vs 24% of the Europe 350
forget mining and farming, we're a nation of bankers apparently.

>Paying to assemble things locally seems like a better idea than buying them finished.
Are you retarded? Importing all needed (expensive) raw materials, chips, whatever other bullshit and then paying garbage wages to the locals to assemble the shit yourself is the opposite of a good idea. Paying 15% more and getting the finished product shipped to you works much better for everyone and you don't have a bunch of people working shit manufacturing jobs that pay garbage wages.

Communism with Chinese Characteristics (AKA state capitalism) won.
>>
>>107129675
free trade killed it.
our companies needed help to ensure that they had a stable consumer base within Australia.
unlike the USA where companies can keep the lights on by selling to the military.

fun fact: Australia once had the most advanced semiconductor manufacturing plant in the world in Homebush.
It was mainly used for medical devices though as they needed the small chips.

I used to use this term decades ago. I grew out of it
>>
>>107130284
What? You think Australia is going to produce all it's raw materials and make everything locally?
>>
>>107130327
China is 100% capitalist.
>Capitalism is when the central committee puts out five year plans, most investment is decided by the state and the state can seize control of any business for any reason without compensation and the government suppresses the currency and funds companies to dump products at a loss and put their foreign competitors out of business

Can confirm- I work for the SA state government, earning ~$72k a year (this is in the healthcare sector specifically, and for the record we're the lowest paid public sector workers in the country) and even though I'm technically on about the median salary for a full time worker here the housing market in Adelaide is completely fucked thanks to all the real estate speculators and immigrants. Even a shitty 2 bedroom unit, that requires a 3 hour daily commute to and from the city now sells for about 8-9x my annual pre-tax income and if you want a basic 3 bedroom house you're looking at $800k~1.2mil. I don't even meet the affordability requirements for the banks to give me a 30-year mortgage on a fucking studio apartment.

I would not touch anything we make. For reference, the architecture building at a university collapsed and killed someone here and the brand new engineering building at another university was opened then closed for a year because the outside walls fell apart

You chink fuckwit, GM and Ford based most of their global platforms on the falcodores for nearly a decade each once the local platforms collapsed because Australia just did it so much better than any other cunt.

It was absolutely no surprise that topgear pulled their dicks over the vauxhall R8 which was just the export version of the SS Commodore.

It was a car for deadshit bogans in Aus, internationally "holy shit this is a gamechanger".
