So, will Hurd ever be released?
>>
it has a release and a few distros
>>
>>107131907
A surprising amount of work has been accomplished on Hurd, given the 5 or so regular developers and next to no funding.

What's the purpose?

GNU/GNU, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus GNU
>>
Stallman is a grifter who live off the work of other people. He and his kike friends don't have what it takes to make a working kernel.
Think about how useless those kikes are; Terry made a working kernel. Fucking /mlp/, make a working kernel. And those faggots, with a budget of millions in donations, don't.
>>
>>107132120
It's a good idea to develop a backup kernel in case Linux dies or something.

Wow I didn't know 64bit support is now complete. They really have been busy might need to give this a look now. This is actually great timing. Has anyone tried it?

HobbyOS (which he developed on Ubuntu). At least Hurd can run on bare metal thanks to the Rump layer.
>Fucking /mlp/, make a working kernel.
Go back.

Wouldn't it be easier to just hard fork the Linux kernel?

Who is gonna maintain it? Hobbyists?

I imagine if something dire enough happened that irreparablely fucked up the Linux kernel, there'd be a lot of maintainers looking to jump ship.
>>
>>107131907
I think Debian at least used to have a release, I wonder if that's still the case. I remember it being crashy as all fuck.
>>
>>107132083
Is it actually still be developed? I thought it was shelved.

Is there a list of supported hardware? Or could it run on pretty much anything debian could?

Here a list of working Old Thinkpads

https://darnassus.sceen.net/~hurd-web/faq/drivers/

The situation is improving dramatically thanks to the adoption of rump for hardware drivers. I wouldn’t be surprised if in 6 months, with the next Debian Hurd update, it will run one much more recent laptops. Once the critical amount of developers will start fixing it on their own hardware, considering the latest patches on the mailing list, I think there are good chances for this to take off in 6 months/one year.

i actually like the idea of a full GNU operating system. i guess guix is as close as it gets.

Interesting

Hurd will follow a similar trajectory to Plan9. The successor to Linux, if one appears, will come from a teracorp and have lots of strings attached.

How so?
>>
>>107134869
Deceptive. How much of that is drivers, especially for literal-who hardware, and legacy garbage like ReiserFS? How much could you tweak without having to screw with driver code I wonder.
>>
>Today, most people don't believe it will ever be ready for production use, and thus would consider involvement a waste of time. This latter point is invalid, of course, as learning can never be a waste of time. The same holds for the challenges raised by the GNU Hurd -- we can only learn and improve upon working on them.
what have you learned today, anons?

guix install hurd
>>
>>107135751
someone recently booted it on an hp elitebook and thinkpad t530
it probably works on more hardware than anyone's aware of because it doesnt have enough users to test all the models
eventually it will have the same hardware support as netbsd
>>
>>107139463
Does that actually work? Is it that easy?
>>
>>107139604
no lol
The following package will be installed:
hurd 0.9.git20251029

guix install: error: package hurd@0.9.git20251029 does not support x86_64-linux

but you can define and run a hurd virtual machine as a service from within guix
https://guix.gnu.org/manual/en/html_node/Virtualization-Services.html
>>
>>107137456
plan9 seems uninterested in unix compatibility because it ruins the purity of the design or whatever. the point of hurd is it's just GNU
>>
What makes Hurd good?
>>
>>107141022
Better fundamental design.
Compare it with the mach microkernel.

Linux was always a shit design by a retard.
For example, it still became popular even though for many years it had the “giant lock” which still affects dome of the older drivers today. This lock was extremely embarrassing and absolutely destroyed performance, so how linux ever took off remains a mystery as much as how 75 million americans voted for trump.
