two cases are good if you build 3.5" NAS system from PC motherboard and ATX powersupply and wont try premade NASesone is from China, another from Germanyeverything today has that annoying home appliance look which tries to hide from the fact these are computersbut not German, it looks.. industrialprices are roughly the same but Jonsbo fits more HDDsso which one is best for the bucks?Jonsbo has more width and more detphBut is a lot shorter due to being cubecan you throw ideas on even better NAS cases?8x HDD is minimum
>>107140544Random hardware you have collecting in a closet.
>>107140592Oh and you can use the cardboard box it's all sitting in as a case. Or a laundry basket.Duct tape is fine for securing hard drives
>>107140544i just 3d printed one in fire retardant abs so i could vapor smooth it.
>>107140544You can use whatever case for a NAS. Mine is an old NZXT with 3D printed HDD cage.
>>107140592ThisYou upgrade your PC, buy ssd+HDD and build NAS from your old PC
>>107140592>>107140964Not with the idle power draw of full ATX motherboards.
>>107141031Oh no!Who cares, really? My i7-7700k idling at 800 MHz, I didn't measure full system power from the wall but I guess it's around 50W which is fucking nothing
>>107141031Idle power draw isn't as big of an issue if it's Intel. If it's AMD you're fucked.
You could go for a second-hand NZXT H440. It supports up to 11 drives in total. Each drive tray can hold two 3.5" drives, and there are also a few extra spots where you can mount additional 2.5" or 3.5" drives.
>>107140544I can't stand that fake wood on modern cases.
>>107140544currently running the jonsbo n5 myself. solid case although shit like the fan connectors are hidden on the backplane and took me a while to figure out where they were (got it eventually, they make noise but you probably won't notice them if you stuff it in q cupboard which kinda defeats the wood grain look)it also has a weird drive mounting system with rubber rollers for the rails and a rubber strap for pulling the drives out, guess it helps with drive vibration.unless you want to deal with sfx psus you might wanna skip the n4 which i think tops out at 8 drives but is at least smaller
>>107141126it's real wood on the jonsbo
>>107140544>8x HDD is minimumthen just get a larger case. define 7xl can hold up to 16HDD for example, but you'll pay for the extra trays or comparable
>>107141073that's ~438 kWh per yearin many if not most countries that costs more than buying a new setup that can run at 10-15W
>>107141073>>107141085electricity is like 40ct per kwh in Germany>>107141178This
>>107141178>>107141201So much for the "first" world lol
>>107141234Up-front expense to reduce operating cost is quite first world, yes.
>>107140544https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eF2LiRJfm6gIt's a "premade NAS", but it doesn't come with a vendor OS, so you can install whatever you want6 HDDs + 5 M2 SSDs
>>107141031Idle draw is $5/m for me on a 2phase circuit. It's not huge but not great.
>>107140544>but not German, it looks.. industrialseems like you wanna buy that one>can you throw ideas on even better NAS cases?if you like that form factor the fractal 804 case is pretty nice (costing less than both), the only con is that it only has place for a mATX board

Fractal Design Node 804.It's been the go to NAS and home server case for ages for a good reason. There's a couple of little things I don't love about it (cheap plastic window, cable management in the second chamber is a little tight) but they're both so minor that no one cares. It fits 8 3.5"s, increasing to 10 if you want to fix them to the bottom of the left chamber too, plus 2 2.5" in the front panel. You can fit a couple of radiators in there as well.I don't really know what more you'd want.
>>107142705>Fractal Design Node 804.while not a choice for OP, i have the node 304 at home and it's also pretty nice
>>107140544any case with hotswap bays
>>107143058i'm actually using this one
>>107140544I have an old optiplex I use as my server, connected to a 4-bay drive holder. Just some cheapy one from Amazon, nothing fancy. Works perfect for a home setup (media serving, file storage). I just can't imagine ever needing more than that.3 drives for data, 1 for snapraid parity. If I ever run out of space, it's (relatively) easy to migrate the data to bigger drives and swap out the old ones (which can be cleaned and sold on ebay). When I see these 8-bay setups or whatever craziness... I just don't know what the use case there is. I can only imagine it's for hoarding, which is really a mental illness. These people need a therapist, not a NAS.
NAS
>>107141201>>1071412628x HDDs is going to vastly consume more power relative to the motherboard/CPULittle reason to worry about the CPU/Board choice
>>107141201Try living in a third world shithole. We have electricity for 8 cents per kwh
