Creative A250. Great 2.1 system for the price. I have a TV behind me when I'm at the computer so I want to set up a 5.1 system that I can invert when watching TV, just a second center channel at the TV and I'm set hardware wise (not currently but comparatively to a normal 5.1 setup)

I just have speaker stands on the sides of my desk. This doesn't result in optimal positioning for stereo imaging (the listening position and speakers need to be an equilateral triangle IIRC) but it's still quite good, plus I get to use real speakers and not some tiny under-monitor sound bad.
>>
>>107210840
Edifier MR4s. They aren’t great but at least they are a cut above usb slop. Will upgrade to kalis LP-UNF eventually.
>>107212412
>jbl stage A130
I wish I had gotten these but they were out of stock and the new line apparently isn’t as good.
>>
I need something for my new build. What are the go-to budget speakers? I am no audiophile. I just want something decent that doesn't take much space
>>
>>107217149
> I guess I could wall mount some speakers above my desk but I like the sound to be head level so...
Head level is ideal, but it’s better for sound to come from above than below. If the speaker is slanted upwards (like your soundbar apparently is) it mitigates some of this issue, but you can probably get some considerably better treble just by crouching next to it to make it head level.
As for wall mounts, they aren’t great because you throw the bass straight into a wall. You want the speakers to be at least 30cm away from a wall, more if there is a corner. Speaker positioning is hard, takes a ton of space but makes one hell of a difference.
>>
>>107217633
Define “budget”. A lot of people think anything under $1000 is a budget speaker. If you want under $100, edifier is the best bet. Probably the MR3s.
>>
>>107217686
>you throw the bass straight into a wall
Assuming there's a bass port on the back, or what? How would a speaker throw the bass into the wall behind it otherwise?
>>
>>107210840
i got the logitech z906.
my neighbors love it when i play hardstyle
>>
>>107217710
yeah below $100 is acceptable. I can only find MR4 on pcpartpicker. Is it an upgrade of sort or should I manually look for MR3 elsewhere?
>>
>>107217713
>Assuming there's a bass port on the back, or what?
That’s where 99% of speakers have their bass port. Some have them both in the front and the back.
>>
>>107217782
The MR3 vs MR4 comparison is a bit controversial. The MR3 is newer, cheaper and measures better out of the box but the MR4 takes EQ better because of the different format in one of the fr peaks. But the difference won’t be huge, they are just okay, after all. Just get whichever you can. Theres also the R1280s, which are priced similarly, measure worse but seem to subjectively please a lot of people. Also easier to run if you are a complete audio normie as it has USB and bluetooth connection (the MRs only have RCA and TRS).

So many people with tiny winey pc 5.1 speakers. I though those died out like 15 years ago.
>>107217633
>I just want something decent that doesn't take much space
It's really depends on a budget and what you consider small. If you need smallest speakers possible the only go with illouds. Other semi-deccent options are some consumer stuff like presonus e3.5 or similar mackie or edifier. If you're okay with 5.25 inch or bigger woofers there's a lot more options. Best cheap new powers speakers probably gonna be jbl 305. Also you can look at something second hand. Some people sell their old bookshelf speakers extremely cheap. You'd just need to buy an amp on amazon.
>>107217518
It's the best small speakers on the market.
>>107217713
Most of my speakers have front ports, but on my center it's in the back. I just stuffed a sock into it.
>>
>>107217713
almost all speakers are omnidirectional in bass due to the wavelengths involved, irrespective of where the driver or port is placed
he's still wrong though, putting speakers very close to the wall gives you extra headroom in bass and helps against SBIR, assuming you have access to eq to pull down excess bass, see https://www.genelec.com/monitor-placement

You want surround or just stereo? i'd look into local used deals. Some old powered monitors like yamaha hs or krk rockit. Or passive bookshelfs and add class d amp like Fosi Audio.
Alternativly if you want new there are deccent cheap stuff like Elac Debut, Polk ES15 or Sony SSCS5. After that you can add a some sub.

>What’s the most sensible way to get a moderate hifi system?
Look for sales and buy whatever has a deep discount. IMO once you're in the mid-price range of speakers everything is basically the same in objective quality and the minor differences are subjective snake oil. Powered systems (speakers + amp combined in one unit) are attractive and are cheaper up front but always fail faster than passive speakers + a decent amp.

Chinks figured out how to make IEMs. It's now cheap as dirt. I don't understand why people buy dozens of earphones, but oh well. Headphones remain mostly the same from year to year. There is now cheaper planars. Bluetooth headphones have a bit better and and codecs. Wireless gaming headsets became usable. I think that's all the new stuff in 20 years.
