The 3.x GUI is good for minimal multitasking. 95's taskbar and Start menu were a huge improvement for the broader multitasking you could do with a Pentium and more RAM.

Command line is for loonix faggots and trannies.

>>107245502
And you can't switch to old GUI, not even on linux. Linux claims to be configurable but you can't.

Ever notice that all smartphones follow the 3.x paradigm of throwing icons into groups laid out in a grid?

>>107245451
The best part of Amiga was most programs supporting ARexx ports, allowing you to call applications from within scripts to do a number of different tasks.

>>107245469
3.x was the peak for keyboard shortcut navigation. You could access everything via shortcuts. Windows 9x retained most of it. It was all downhill from there. If you were comfortable with shortcuts, multitasking wasn't much of a problem.

>>107245457 (winner)
I am always torn between that or System 7 as peak GUI. Everyone else in this thread who says otherwise is wrong. The only thing I'd consider changing is using something like IRIX's vector icons just to keep up with monitor resolution creep.

>The best part of Amiga was most programs supporting ARexx ports, allowing you to call applications from within scripts to do a number of different tasks.
MacOS did that too, AppleScript .
>>
>>107245631
ARexx was 1987 and AppleScript was 1993. ARexx ports were also more capable since they were not only widely supported, but Rexx itself was a proper imperative scripting language. AppleScript forced everything into a limited object model using a 'natural' scripting language that was clunky to use. But you're correct that AppleScript could do similar, years after the fact.
>>
>>107245603
9x not only retained the shortcuts but added more, especially with the Windows key ones. For instance win+number row to switch directly to that numbered taskbar button in one step instead of derping your way through the alt-tab list. Even lesser known old shortcuts that still make sense in modern Windows like alt+esc to cycle through windows without the alt-tab popup are still present today.

The places it's really declined are the "modern" apps from Windows 8 and up. The best you're getting there is slowly tabbing through controls.

Linux is gay - it doesn't allow you to use old GUI. Old GUI is incompatible with modern shit in Linux, can't install.

That's not true. I'm using a 30 year old WM and GUI toolkit on Devuan 5 and I can even develop new apps with it.

Like Firefox and Libre Office? They don't match the Motif look but they do function as expected.

>>107248104
So it's not a real GUI system if programs don't look like the OS.
All programs should look the same.

>>
>>107248397
There's no OS that would meet those standards. Some applications have been using custom or non-standard GUI toolkits and layouts since the mid 80s at least.

>All programs should look the same.
Then you won't have very many programs. I prefer ugly software that works over none at all.

The difference being it's tailored to look somewhat decent in your shit OS since that's what majority use.

Not really "tailored", just lazy and conforming to the lowest common denominator (a homosexual MBA with PowerPoint prototypes screaming at H1B coders). If it were anything other than flat design you wouldn't be able to say that.

The winner isn't a GUI, it's the users who don't focus on trifles like stupid children. Winners don't care about TRIFLES and are utterly insensitive because sensitiviy is weakness.

If you use a computer as a tool then artfaggotry doesn't matter, you don't rice or decorate ANYTHING, you don't even have a background image because if you're using the PC you'd not spend time watching it anyway, and you're jaded and indifferent in a manly way.

Caring about GUI is purest summerfaggotry. GUI are mere tools to conveniently repeat certain actions. More precise granular control is where the command line comes in, and TBQH if you're proficient you don't really need a GUI.

Do any of you kids who fetishize GUI styles actually WORK with your PC as a tool? Gaming is just a way to waste time and doesn't count unless you're working on one for the money.

You know what's funny? Every single version of Windows going all the way back to 1.0 allowed you to close programs by double clicking the upper left-hand corner of their window. Metro/Modern/UWP/whatever apps in Windows 8+? Nope, no longer possible for some reason.

CIA murdered Terry because he made the learn alternative OS. Loonix is controlled opposition.
>>
>>107252976
Yeah it's shit. I still use this sometimes when the top right corner of a window is off screen. Also even though they took away the control menu icon you can still get the menu with alt+space -- which is vital for "alt+space, m, arrow, move mouse, click" bullshit for if a window somehow manages to spawn off screen (usually because it was last opened when a monitor was connected that isn't connected now).
