What the fuck? When did KDE become so bloated and slow? I remember when Linux could revive older hardware that windows doesn't work on, but now KDE and Windows are literally the same level of bloated.
Btw, when I installed GNOME, it just worked. It was a little janky with animations, but it never froze and didn't take a full minute to show the window.
In the end, I ended up using XFCE. But imagine! GNOME, the resource hog is BETTER than KDE. What the fuck, KDE?!

it's kde on an ivy bridge laptop my guy
i used to use Manjaro (yes i know it sucks) on a raspberry pi 4 with KDE and it was awful too. although it seemed even worse than GNOME.

you should try LXQT if you want something lighter that still uses QT.

Yup. DE's are bloat, but XFCE is GOATed. Thought this was commonly understood.

There's no shame in using xfce or something more suited your hardware needs

How?? My X230 (same CPU gen) with a 10+ year old SSD loads the desktop in ~15 seconds, are you booting from a 5400 rpm hard drive?
>>
>>107248907
KDE is bloat for Thinkpads, that's definitely true, but either way if it's taking this long to load on startup, it means there's something wrong with the Thinkpad.
I found out the hard way that the refurbisher gave me a used Thinkpad with the wrong battery model and with an SSHD Hybrid drive instead of an SSD. Even when I had TDE and XFCE, it was SLIGHTLY faster, sure. But it was way too slow than it normally was from other videos of Thinkpads running any DE, which indicated to me something was seriously wrong.
I replaced every fucked up component, and now it runs pretty fast. I am not 100% sure about KDE, but I am 99% sure it'll run faster if you double check that all the hardware is correctly upgraded and that the refurbisher didn't fuck you over.

That's not necessarily true. I started with KDE because I bought into all of the posts about how KDE is as light as XFCE these days and that older DEs are just obsolete. KDE consumed the most ram and took the longest to boot up, GNOME took only a bit less but was much faster to boot, XFCE was lightning fast and wouldn't even trigger my fans unless I was actually doing something heavy.

trannies, estrogen, kneesocks. also there is such a thing as race differences, and finns are not white and not really human either.

You obviously bought a laptop with 4GB of RAM and a spinning disk. Just upgrade to 16GB of RAM and a nice SSD and it will be as fast as any other computer.
>inb4 but the CPU is older
CPUs are hardly ever running at 100% load for long, the bottleneck is elsewhere. Besides I have an X201 Thinkpad somewhere which is even two generations older and it's still running KDE just fine. Nothing takes a minute to open with it.
