What are /g/'s thoughts on using Bazzite as a primary desktop OS? I took a look at it due to the new Valve hardware announcements, and it might be pretty nice for general desktop usage as well besides gayming.

It's basically rpm-ostree image based on Fedora Silverblue/Kinoite, but with a growing userbase so it likely won't end up abandonware anytime soon.

I hope you like containers.

Actually yes I do. I get a system that never breaks that is impossible to break that has no updates ever (just reboot lol) and that is containerized and thus sandboxed everywhere.

Nice addition due to the containerization? I can install arch/fedora/debian/ubuntu packages and they just work with all hardware and I can even export them so they work as if they are native.

People who still cry about a distro being immutable are so far past salvation that its not even funny. Its the same kind of people who broke down after Gnome asked distro developers to not ship custom theme. Despite them saying hey this is only towards distro shippers not to end users. Similarly for Silverblue if you need to tinker just edit the base image. Though if you need to tinker (ie you are unemployed and cannot deal with a system that just works) you might be interested in Arch Linux.

and mind I add no reboot required for installing anything. You only reboot for layered packages. I do cuda dev on my bazzite machine. I have 1 (one) package layered and it isnt even mandatory.

What's your dev setup like with it? Do you use IDE or vim/emacs?

you do realize immutable distros means /home is still writeable? maybe thats too much to grasp for an npc. saying this because bazzite gives you the option to install brew and/or nix for the current user. which though is only required if no other linux distro ships what you need (you can install container apps basically natively and thus can install apps from any distro on silverblue)

vscode and emacs. Both work flawlessly with the container support. Emacs is actually mind blowing container support due to Tramp. Vscode is just the working mans editor. It works flawlessly especially when running the completely locked down flatpak version. Its as secure as vscode can ever get it has no access to anything but can just setup an entire dev environment in your container while your host stays as clean as day 1.

and to note i come from my macbook. comparing the macbook to bazzite is like comparing a stone age monkey throwing sticks (macos) to some advanced alien technology respectively (silverblue). i havent noticed an update on bazzite since i have installed it. Yet I am always on the most recent version. Meanwhile macbooks "pls update thank". Never going back.

Honestly sounds quite convincing. For desktop not having to be concerned about updates is very nice. Shits annoying as fuck to upkeep on the long run and I'd actually prefer to use containers for dev since they keep the host clean from shitty deps.

Even further the security of macs is a joke compared to silverblue. SIlverblue even disallows root editing the entire fs. On macos only a tiny part is mounted readonly. In addition nothing in macos even barely compares to selinux.

I think universal blues tagline is more and more accurate the more time I spend with bazzite "Powered by the future, delivered today" it really seems like silverblue is at least a decade ahead od everyone else in the computing space (and i highly suspect that silverblue is the reason valve went with immutable arch)

Why do you use Bazzite over Silverblue?
>>
>>107250136
I started with Silverblue. Bazzite does just some nice things for me so I dont have to think about it. Bazzite desktop sets up codecs drivers right ahead. Its literally just works with modern nvidia wayland and for gaming and high performance. Its a windows users wet dream (this likely also explains why their installs are going through the roof). And due to being gaming focused it usually also includes performance and gpu patches which is quite heplful for my dev work.

Also bazzite has bazaar as main app store. Silverblue is still on gnome software I think. Not that important but again bazaar blows the mac app store away.

Is it copilot coded? If yes, definitely not. Even the name sounds like AI slop.

Looking at the usage statistics is quite funny, Bazzite is far ahead to Silverblue in users. I'm all for it, the main reason I'm looking into Bazzite is since I'm on Windows 10 at the moment for VR hardware support, but looking for ditching it for good.

But can it run EROGE? This is an important metric.
