I use cloudflare, but not for ddos protection. I'm using dns with acme certs for my home setup, and also R2 (s3)storage since it comes 10GB free with my 5$ subscription. I use the latter for automatic backup of my configs

If you are under attack from something they don't recognise you can configure your own rules and rely on their terabits of bandwidth and layer 7 packet filtering capacity which you probably can't afford. If all else fails you can just make the JS challenges mandatory which will stop 99% of bots and autistic army of F5'ers while only moderately inconveniencing customers. POW stuff hosted local to the server helps for situations when CF is fucked, but you can still be knocked offline by a DDoS because there's nothing small players can do when all the chinkshit IP cameras with port 80 open and root vulnerabilities up the ass are all pointed at you for 12 hours straight.
