https://igwiki.lyci.de/wiki/Home_server

/hsg/ is about learning and expanding your horizons. Know all about NAS? Learn virtualization. Spun up some VMs? Learn about networking by standing up a OPNsense/PFsense box and configuring some VLANs. There's always more to learn and chances to grow. Think you’re god-tier already? Setup OpenStack and report back.

>What software should I run?
Install Gentoo. Or whatever flavor of *nix is best for the job or most comfy for you. Jellyfin/Emby/Plex to replace Netflix, Nextcloud to replace Googlel, Ampache/Navidrome to replace Spotify, the list goes on. Look at the awesome self-hosted list and ask.

>Why should I have a home server?
De-botnet your life. Learn something new. Serving applications to yourself, your family, and your frens feels good. Put your tech skills to good use for yourself and those close to you. Store their data with proper availability redundancy and backups and serve it back to them with a /comfy/ easy to use interface.

so im going to be switching from comcast to a ftth isp, what router/switch/wap would you guys recommend for gigabit? rackmount isnt terribly feasible, but ii might be able to get away with a wall mount or desktop 4u or something. im planning on using openwrt for the router, no clue about the switch (probably going to buy it second hand from a business liquidator unless something screams "good deal"), and same for the wap.

what did you guys do?

>Main Server
fractal d7xl
epyc 7402
h12ssl-i
quadro rtx 4000
4x 32gb 3200 rdimm
4x 2tb samsung 990pro
2x 1.5tb intel optane 905p
7x 20tb seagate exos
some dual 10gig rj45 nic
2x 64gb satadom

Backup Server
fractal d7
ryzen 5500gt
asus x470-f gaming
2x 16gb 3200 ddr4
1x 250gb m.2
3x 12tb hdd
some 2.5gig nic

More memory for the main server and another vdev for the backup server are the current priorities. Though there's something wrong with the quadro. Idk if it's actually broken, or if I just need to flash the bios. So that might need replacing. The idea was for it to be for a windows desktop in a vm, but so far it's just been for transcoding because I can't seem to get sunshine to work.

when vsftpd fails to boot, it writes the error message to stdin. Yes, not stdout, not stderr, but stdin. I would have *never* fucking figured this out without gemini's esoteric knowledge, because in the vsftpd source on github it's set to write to stdout (apparently, distro maintainers change this setting to stdin when they build the binary???). even gemini took forever to figure this out, he kept telling me that I was redirecting the wrong process or that vsftpd must be writing directly to /dev/tty, until I pasted part of the source in which jogged his memory and caused him to figure out what was happening. what the FUCK

How bad is it to use older model Seagate SMR drives for an extra storage pool in TrueNAS?

Putting them to use would be nice if they worked out but people say SMR is a nightmare. How bad is it?
I have two of them so I would do a mirror to store some data that's rarely written and rarely read. Ideally, this pool would also be spun down and allowed to sleep. It seems like my use case should be the most forgiving and allow them to work fine, but I don't really know. Is SMR really the total nightmare that people claim it is?
>>
>>107257452
they will be slower than CMR and they will choke on sustained writes (like when setting up the mirror or copying a movie or whatever onto the drive).

You already have them i assume, why not try them and test out your use cases for them?
>>
>>107258297
>SMR
>setting up the mirror
If you run SMR in RAID, you might as well run Raid 0 because you clearly don't care about your data
>>
>>107258342
not me, the anon who is asking the question mentioned the mirror.

>would not use an SMR drive on purpose for anything
>>
>>107258342
for me the entire point of RAID 1 is i don't have to care about drive durability at all
