my salary is literally 10x of my starting wage back in the stone age, yet if I account for inflation I had maybe 15% of real increase. If I look at my purchasing power it is even worse due to inflation states being doctored to hell and back. Fiat is such a scam, most people are taken for a fool if you use a bigger number to express the same/smaller unit of something. Honestly, we should use the big mac index or return to bartering outright.

boomer here, I don't believe in 99% of mental illnesses, people being sad is not a mental illness. However if something can alleviate sadness is visiting escorts. Mental health '''professionals"' are a joke, their medications are even worse compared to scheduling a session with an escort for half the price.
>I mean, I am interested in trying it at least once but I've been delaying it year after year even though escorts are completely legal here.
you don't know if you are missing out or not unless you try it, this is seriously one of the things that can redefine your whole outlook on life

>What certs are we studying?
Thinking of doing Azure and AWS certs.
I see a lot of jobs asking for them.
On the other hand I feel like it is worthless knowledge.
This is stuff you can learn easily on the job, but HR hags ask for "credentials" as if this proves your competency.
I'd rather hire someone who has never worked a specific tech stack but is a good programmer in general.
Than someone with 20 years on a stack, but who is a bad programmer.
HR hags don't get this, cause to them coding is magic, and you must have been initiated to the "arcane secrets" of a stack.
If only they knew how easy it is...
>What degree are you looking to get?
Unis in my country are shit and I'm planning to take OMSCS MSc, which is considered "the best" online CS MSc AFAIK and is not that bad compared to the good unis. And super cheap cause I'm broke.
On the other hand I am too insecure and self-studying before I start, cause I'm afraid I won't have time to study after I start.
And also I have big gaps in math, but I'm getting pretty ok with leetcode and algorithms.
I'm really enjoying self-studying math desu I'm thinking I should just focus on math and then pivot to some Math heavy field.
>Are you going to go find a job in another country?
My goal is remote. US pref, to get US salary which will allow me to live like a king here.
Even half a US salary will.

I'm also studying Chinese.
Think I have too much on my plate right now, but I'm desperate to move up and nobody will hire me despite 5YOE in Python, automation and full-stack dev, I get rejected everywhere. Can't even secure an interview.

Everytime something goes wrong at work and I have no clue how or why, I lose a little more respect for myself. Every time my boomer boss fixes it and then says "we don't expect you to know this stuff" I lose a little bit more.

Then every time I meet a "software engineer" in the wild who cannot describe what he makes, what he supports, or even having any hobbies, all that lost self esteem is restored with interest on top of dividends. What the actual fuck are all these "engineers" doing with their company time
>>

>>
>>107267441
I will not pretend to be competent myself, but where I work, when things get fixed it's because someone either pushed a particular series of buttons or did a particular series of board-level part replacements. What makes me anxious is that I cannot do that kind of shit in confidence; I don't know the individual services to kill and restart let alone where they run and what they want to touch, and I don't know what individual passives have exploded and can only barely replace one given exactly what and where it goes.

I may have lied a little bit in my interview.

This is going to sound dumb but still. I want to see what you guys would do here.

I have to do a refactor on a component that someone else made, in a way that allows it to use different possible databases instead of being hardcoded for one. So separate the storage layer basically.

It was made by a dumb boomer who writes horrible code. Not even in a pajeet sense of not caring. He tries and cares, but can't do a good job beyond good code formatting and variable naming.

He is a good guy and I would never say anything to offend him or make him look bad. But it is what it is.

Now I either essentially rewrite the entire thing, or, just for this, continue with his design and produce a bunch fo stupid code with my name on the commits.
>>

>>107272387
B.
Don't piss off your coworkers. You can let him know to try x,y,z and make it do it himself. But find the right timing for it.

Do not fucking rewrite it without his permission though. are you retarded
>>
>>107272430
you are right. he's a cool guy anyway. i'll make this change and leave everything i can as it is.
>>
>>107272451
seriously what made you EVER think that rewriting someone's entire code without their permission is a good thing to do.
>>
>>107272430
>Do not fucking rewrite it without his permission though. are you retarded
thinking that you need permission is the retarded part. looping him in is fine but it should be phrased as "hey I AM doing this just FYI, anything I should know?" and if the boomer guy isn't a total retard he won't care because there's nothing to care about.

>>107272387
rewrite it. It is not offensive to rewrite someone's code if it needs to do something else. It is extremely common for the first version of something to be dumb and hardcoded and the next version to be rewritten to be more flexible. Just don't do anything autistic like pinging him in slack to explain why his first version was bad. Do it, tag him in the PR to keep him in the loop that you needed to adjust the code to do something else and move on. This is something that I have done to other people's code and had done to my code so many times I would not even think twice about it.
>>
>>107272480
I should add, obviously this only applies if this is some shared codebase you both work on. If this is a separate thing that literally only this boomer maintains, then yeah talk to him directly about the changes rather than going ahead with it and filling him in later.
>>
>>107272480
>thinking that you need permission is the retarded part. looping him in is fine but it should be phrased as "hey I AM doing this just FYI, anything I should know?" and if the boomer guy isn't a total retard he won't care because there's nothing to care about.
Or be diplomatic and tell him that you got the requirement to make a component independent of the data storage layer so you need to refactor it and ask if he has anything in mind that could be affected by this change.
>>
>>107272467

because it's horrible code

like really horrible. some devs think good code is a matter of formatting and variable, function or class naming, and its not. the logic is incredibly convoluted, all variables are global, you can never tell which side effects a change will have....
>>
>>107272480
No cocksucker what the fuck, why would you purposely piss off your coworker.

>>107272509
talk with him first.
>>
>>107272511

nah i wont bother. i definitely prioritize getting along with coworkers over the company kek.

i dont want to risk him thinking "he thinks my code was awful" and risk problems down the line from coworkers not liking me
>>
>>107272511
it should not piss him off, and even then all you have to do is ask. Do you seriously live life like this? Are there parts of the codebase you work on that are just frozen in time because your name isn't in the most recent blame so you aren't allowed to touch it? I would never want to work with you.
>>
>>107272593
Fuck you retard. Don't be autistic and just ask.
>>
>>107272597
In all of my posts I recommended looping in the guy. The only difference is I did not frame it as "asking for permission" because there is no such thing if this is code that both of these guys "own." The idea of making it a big deal to ask permission in that case is the autistic part. it should not require an online therapy session to work up the courage to edit some text when this is solved in a 3 message slack exchange to see if the guy has any concerns (or to find out if he's going to throw some tantrum, because apparently that is a thing you are so concerned about happening)

>>
>>107272637
Nah but he's kind of right...

Even asking is a suggestion that I don't like his current code. That, mind you, he tried to do a good job with, and has been a software dev for longer than me.

Normies don't respond well to that. And for now, he wouldn't even be mad at me if I'm nice about it. But down the line, things like this make a difference.

If my coworkers feel negatively about me, it could mean an uncomfortable environment, even a change in the way he responds if, for example, our boss asks him about something I did, and therefore even a change in getting a raise.

I think the savvy, pragmatic thing to do here is to leave it alone. It's not my problem after all if the code is bad.
>>
>>107272673
>Even asking is a suggestion that I don't like his current code
no it isn't. the circumstances have changed and now it needs to do something else. it was fine how he wrote it before, now it needs an update. If you are this terrified of it offending him you could offer to let him do it. Man I have literally had interns decide to modify my code and I never throw a fit over it, I just tell them "yep go for it" if it seems like it makes sense and suggest something else if it doesn't. The code needing to change is not some indictment of the person who wrote it.

I have no idea where you pulled those numbers out of, but China is like 5-7x cheaper than the United States. And the wages aren't terrible either. >Trusting AI and official statistics
Have in mind that 90% of the country is extremely poor and living in rural areas, and why yes, cost of living is much cheaper, it's not cheaper enough for the people living in under 200$ per month.
In china people are so poor that selling your children to wealthy families for a couple thousand dollars is common, and healthcare is so extremely expensive, that they would literally sue a person helping someone getting hurt so they pay their treatment.
And for God fucking lord, just look at the goddamn number you posted, 16500$ is 1375$ per month, remove the average 31.5% income tax, that's 977,37$ per month, do you even think any person earning this would be able to pay 11k$ if they broke a leg? There's something really fucked up about engineers as a labor class. Other career fields understand that attitude and aptitude is all that matters when hiring someone, but engineers are usually insecure, arrogant, and autistic betas. Most engineering work is trivial, but engineers have a myopic view of the world and an inaccurate perception of their importance in it. They sabotage their own self-interests and quality of life and gate keep their code monkey jobs from each other with an ever growing list of barriers in the style of perpetual upskilling in the form of leetcode, system design, and inane trivia questions.

Sometimes when they or the marketing people are speaking during all hands meetings I'm just filled with the feeling of "You don't actually know what any of the things you're saying really mean, do you?"

But hey, the company is chugging along just fine so evidently its not really that important.
>>
>>107274192
I legitimately don't give a fuck about my management's competency nor background as long as they are not being annoying.
>>
Tfw when you realized you've wasted a decade getting the degree and working this industry for it to become obsolete when you could have just joined a frat and coasted through college and interviews into some cushy office job where you just shoot the shit and barely do anything and climb the ladder without having to grind nerd shit and not worried about being outsourced or automated
It's unironically over
To any retard who still has a chance reading this, hit the gym switch to finance and join a frat you will be so much better off. Abandon the mentality that there is any job where having technical ability matters at all

Pretty much, I know it's a meme but I
do think the only opportunity going forward is getting into a trade before the flood of unemployed white collar workers shows up. Just accept that blue collar work is pure wagecucking 60+ hours a week to get by

tbf why not just become a prompt engineer then? or be the few remaining to use AI to build stuff?

There's no such thing as a "prompt engineer".

Just think, man. The whole point of AI is that it's supposed to do things by the user just asking. If you had to be some kind of engineer to write the prompt, then it'd be just regular programming.

Plus, let's say that, for any request from designers or management, the "prompt engineer" somehow figures out how to ask the AI that through some process. What prevents the AI from doing the "prompt engineering" itself and figuring out what the "prompt engineer" would say, but straight from the input of the designer / manager / etc?

managers will still want to insulate themselves from doing any actual meaningful work and also have someone as a fall guy so it is inevitable that they'd hire at least 1 guy to fuck around with the AI
>>
>>107275668
Yeah but also you get to pass with 50% and if you fail over and over you finally just do "oral examination" where you just discuss the class with your professor and then he passes you anyways.

That was not an engineer. He was a technician and there's nothing wrong with that.

>>107275698
Ok, good point. I suppose it makes sense that they would have a "guy" to directly deal with the AI.

But then there is a problem still: The main thing that sustains our lifestyle as software devs would completely collapse.

We are incredibly sheltered by the fact that programming can't be learned by repetition so normies suck at it (everyone is "learning to code" yet salaries aren't substantially decreasing), women are too dumb to do it (notice how there's barely any women devs, and the ones there are are dumb as fuck), and indians are too dumb to get it right (indians have coding jobs because so many retards keep trying to outsource. but if indians actually could code, it would be like with manufacturing in China. coding would be an indian thing and we would have no coding jobs at all. because obviously, no one would pay a huge premium for white devs if indians were good).

Furthermore, demand is huge, compared to what it would be if companies had even one "AI guy" per software project, which is a lot already.

If these circumstances disappeared, we'd be fucked. Demand would be a small fraction of what it is. And even for the remaining demand, they would not hire you or me, they would hire some guy's cousin, or some foid or nigger for a quota.

If AI could code, we'd be fucked. I don't know how anyone would unironically be so unintelligent as to think he'd get by just fine as a "prompt engineer". Jfl

>Give me a prompt to ask an LLM to do X
Yes that's already a thing.
In fact, you can have a cluster of LLMs role-playing with each other to answer to a question. This is what they call "agentic AI" and improves the quality of the replies a bit.
>>
>>107274311

Lol

It's not about to become obsolete. The actual job takes general reasoning beyond what AI can do or will be able to do in a long time.

If anything the whole "bro don't study that, AI will do it anytime now!" (some idiots even go as far as to think AI already does our jobs but somehow they're still hiring), will make salaries even higher.

For the "cushy office job where you do nothing", you need to network and play games. For this, the intelligence requirement shields you from most competition.

Grand scheme of things not alot of training. One would consider it familiarization the way that Russia has been doing it since the 1950's and still does it. A little bit of exercise followed by class instruction, marching and then some shooting at the end of it. Ofc they can't afford everyone to shoot so they just leave it to the college kids to throw some rounds down range.

Its no replacement for actual military training but its better than nothing really. Think of it like JROTC but mandatory for couple weeks out of the year since elementary.

No way to late for that. You can make rigging models for Vtubers and VR chat and still make bank. I am talking about 10k+ USD a month but it does in fact take about a month to finish creating it so there is that factor.
>>
>>107276125
Do you not even notice the contradiction?

I am not coping about any jobs coming back. They don't have to come back, they never left. Only a fraction, so what.

Like I said, if indians could do a good job, NO ONE would hire any white people. It's so much more expensive and wouldn't make any sense.

>Dev jobs are coming back any day now! Today, once again, I checked linkedin for software dev jobs in the US and there was nothing. None. But... Don't give up! Just two more weeks!! And they'll come back!!

Do you unironically think I was saying that? Or that it would even make sense if I did?

Kek what a retard, that is not what reddit spacing is.

You don't even know what reddit spacing originally meant or why it was said.

What state of the market you fucking retard? You're so dumb. Don't you understand that if either AI or indians could do a software dev job, NO ONE WOULD HIRE?

It wouldn't mean a few layoffs, it would mean NO OFFERS? Can't you grasp that idea?

Plus people are still making 100k+ out of college anyway.

> most people don't know how their apps go live

To be fair at most companies this would be a devops job or someone working on infra rather than just the programmer. It also really heavily depends on the cloud or on prem architecture. Then there's scalability, resource cost and so on. I don't expect most devs to be able to answer questions about deployment correctly.

Not that anon but I can tell you first hand, as I have been there several times with my Chinese wife, those people's lives are fucked unless you have connections. Huge swaths of their population are poor as fuck compared to the average American. I doubt you've ever seen an outhouse let alone used one like I did in someone's house there. Their infrastructure is a complete sham. Total shit. I don't think there is a straight sidewalk in that entire country. Look, I liked Chinese people because for the most part they are super nice and polite. But their country is just fucked. You need to actually go there and experience that place outside of the center of tier one city. Even the urban people live like slaves to their jobs but I guess that is entirely another conversation.

I see your mistake but I understand what you mean. I still don't agree however. Asians are bug people. They are the opposite end of the spectrum from blacks/browns. What you are essentially saying is "If Chinese people were like whites then they would usurp whites". If they were going to they would have a long time ago given their population numbers (the real ones anyway).
>>
>>107277473
True but china would be in much better position if it gave a shit about its people in any capacity like the japanese at least pretends to do so. Korea isn't even as clean as japan.
