this. Shitlibs feel all the same discomfort due to current society as normal people do, but they can't voice or even inwardly acknowledge this because it would go against their programming, so the stress keeps mounting and gets released through politically safe outlets

No, the correct answer is what's wrong with being dumb if you still get results? Guns meant we no longer had to train for years to become a master swordsman and people seethed, then accepted it as the way of things. We don't have to be strong enough to kill bears or lions anymore neither no one is seething that "guns are making us weak!!!" I fucking hate luddites.

I am looking into starting as a Programming professor at my local third world country uni.
I could teach courses like Programming I, Data Structures, Algorithms and so on.

In your opinion, how could a good professor go about teaching properly and how to deal with AI?
Should I just "trust" all my students and just give them Problem Sets? Pen and paper exams?
>>
>>107263389

>>
>>107263389
Same anon here.
In my time, I had to go through every kind of evaluation.
There were cool professors, and shit professors. I had to do pen and paper exams, oral exams, coding projects and homework. Some professor had us doing projects and evaluated everyone privately one by one, asking us questions. I'm not sure what would be the best, modern approach.
I'm feeling inclined to "just trust them" and assign them problem sets and evaluating them via tests.

I mean, if they cheat, it's on them and they'll get the consequences, right?
>>
>>107263429
Yeah, if the kids go to Uni, they should get what they're paying for; that is, formal education.

>>107263498
I am bitter, that is true. But that has nothing to do with the fact that one goes to College/Uni to get formal education. No, my job is not getting them jobs. My job (would be) teaching them. Once they get a Computer Science, engineering or whatever degree, it's up to them to get a job. If they learned properly, they should be able to get a job, if they want.
Not to mention, some kids unironically want to stay in "academia", maybe get a masters and a phd.

The idea of going to college for money is an NPC meme

As someone who has been an assistant professor, AI being a thing makes performance evaluation a pain in the ass. You can probably get away with multiple choice in some more complex topics, but I imagine you have to rely on handwritten essays a lot more, and those are a pain to grade.

no your job literally is to get them a job. if they loved computers as a hobby they wouldve done what i did and self taught like an autist, probably like you did?
the industry is just so fucked up now, that before all they had to do was go to your class, and then a few more other classes, and theyd have a job lined up. its not like that anymore, no fault of your own but your mindset is telling me "im not interested in adapting".
which is completely reasonable, you are just doing your job, but you are definitely doing a poor job for your students.
think of it like this, you will make the smart rule followers who do care, do a bunch of dull repetitive work, basically punishing them, making them grind.
the stupid people who dont care, will just breeze through it, cheating, and maybe they spend more time being social or learning sales on the side, they out-compete your little do-gooder rule followers.

>>
>>107263618
I just can't fully agree. If a kid only cares about getting a job as soon as possible, he should join a bootcamp or do online courses, self taught like you mention.
I know many kids go to college with that mentality but are unaware of it, I was one of them. Hell, ten years ago I wanted to get a degree in Law, but opted for Computer Science for muh high paying job (what a joke).

I think formal education should either weed them out, or adjust them. There'll be many dropouts and that's a good thing, that's just life or God telling them this is not for them. But, in the end, both the "do-gooders" and the stupid ones that didn't drop out (I was one of them) will be on almost the same level. The do-gooders will be able to choose whether to try and get a job or remain in "academia" and maybe pursuit a masters. The other kids will still be able to get a job because by that point they'll be (or should be) decently trained as software engineers.

I don't want to excuse the actual lazy fucks who break down at having to do anything, but for those of us who do actually work and somewhat give a shit about the quality of their work, I imagine educators are in a similar position... That they have way too broad of a scope of their work that they need to meet and are being set up to fail by their bosses who refuse to hire the appropriate amount of people to handle the workload because the c-suite needs another vacation property or yacht.

when dealing with student who using AI.
highlight in the first sentence.

if you are using an AI. write the prompt you are input. so you can find the pattern what is bad/good prompt input. it will be teaching them using good input to get better result. should embrace AI.
>>
>>107263797
I'm curious what were you teaching/just grading, not that I want screenshots (I do to laugh) but in my experience LLMs are absolutely unusable as anything more that a memory aid, they just spit out too much incorect, often dangerous as I work with electronics, garbage so I don't use them at all when working on important stuff
I imagine they may be more viable when more subjective, creative writing is involved, I by no mean suggest that they can write with soul just that they might be a little harder to identify from desperate student padded slop from ye olden days

Honest question: how is AI any different than a calculator, but for text? Many kids used to cheat using calculators on tests, or for homework assignments, but instead of throwing tantrums, teachers adapted to teaching kids to have to think it out while still using calculators. Sure, nobody knows how to read a log table anymore, but buildings didn't collapse because engineers used calculators.

Calculators enable you to perform advanced mathematics without getting bogged down with basic multiplication. ChatGPT just lets you regurgitate random reddit posts mixed with hallucinations. You can MAYBE use AI to simplify a badly worded passage or demystify something you don't understand at first but the way it's being used is like when people were saying "why study anything when I can just google it?" Do you really want your aircraft to be designed by chatGPT graduates?
>>
>>107266835

>>107266835
You're looking at calculators from a modern post-adaptation lens. Surely people back then were "nooo, you can't just use a calculator and never memorize your multiplication tables!!" A lot of stupid kids today don't memorize their multiplication tables, granted, but the engineers today still do, despite their using calculators most of the time. And they can still do the higher maths.

I don't want aircrafts designed by a language model, but lawyering boilerplate that in the end is just some propaganda piece tailored to steer the decision making of one single judge? Maybe an LLM who can process every single case file that went thru that particular judge and their resulting ruling, split between "law was clear, judge had no wiggle room to decide either way" or "judge decided this one based on his fee-fees or whatever, because it was very grey area", and adapt your facts to a narrative specifically meant to evoke to whatever made him decide this or that way on those cases? I can see that as a positive.

And this is one example from the top of my head, but the point is there are fields that thrive on shape rotator hard maths and calculators and fields that thrive on wordcels splitting hairs over some semantic pilpul bullshit that might benefit from LLMs. I want the right tool used for the right problem. Not some luddite "nooo you just can't progress", because even if that is the correct solution, it has never worked before.
>>
>>107267502
So you want a legal system that can be swayed by an LLM? Which one? Super WokeGPT or Ultra Woke Grok? The dangers of "AI" are already apparent with people asking these dogshit sources if something is true and choosing to believe whatever the AI hallucinated. In theory these could be useful tools but the reality is that they do far more damage than good. Pretty soon video evidence won't even be admitted into court because it could be AI generated. Or maybe AI generated video will be misused as evidence. Who knows. I just know we don't NEED this technology. Nobody even thought we'd have shit like this in our lifetimes 5 years ago, and now we're at the point where shaving razors are somehow "AI powered."

>>107267574
I don't want a legal system that can be swayed by LLMs by design, but our current system is headed by humans calling the shots: "yep, this guy is right, that guy is wrong, pay up." That's what we have. And these humans with power to affect lives can be themselves affected by words on paper. Some words are better able to sway their opinions than some other words, regardless of who is right. Are you denying the reality we live in? So if that reality is accepted, then yes, I want my lawyer to have the best tool at his disposal to make sure the dumb judge gets emotionally swayed to decide in my favour, since I'm right and the other guy is wrong. Also, since this is a fucking arms race and the other guy will have the best tool at his disposal as well. And despite all their hallucinations and stupidity, LLM are still a tool that can and has been used to achieve some real-world results. We don't need ai powered shaving razors. But saying "ban all ai" is stupid because 1. it wont happen, 2. there are some few domains that benefit from it. I expect teachers to teach the students how to differentiate between the two instead of going either "ai is the holy grail, I'll guide my life by what it says" and "ai is the literal great satan and the entire Earth must band together to kill it". Again, maybe we banding together and killing it is the moral right option, but it's not realistically going to happen.
