Hello /g/entoomen, lately I have been thinking about purchasing a proper e-ink reader to encourage myself to read more books. What are some recommended e-ink readers in the Year of Our Lord 2025? Some criteria:- grayscale display is fine; I have an iPad if I ever want to read in color- hackable and not at the mercy of the manufacturer ending support and bricking it- preferably running an open-source OS (not sure if there is something like Android but for e-readers)- compatible with ePub, PDF, and whatever other formats textbooks and novels etc. can be freely found in- not sure what the best screen size is, but not tiny and not super huge- integrated backlight- good battery life- USB-C charge port- basic wi-fi connectivity (e.g. sync with Calibre; full web browser not necessary)- expandable storage via MicroSD is a plus but not strictly necessary
>>107269410your first ereader should be the cheapest used Kindle you can find at your local thrift store, even fairly recent Paperwhites are effectively free in most placesput it in airplane mode and load books over USB, if it's on or can be upgraded to a hackable firmware version then jailbreak it and throw koreader on itif you like it but need more you can look into an android reader from Boox or similar, but they're much more expensive and have significantly worse battery life, or look into Kobo if you want something Kindle-equivalent but less aggressively corporate

>>107269410It seems that Kobos are kinda just what you want. Their software update format is just a tar file placed in its root, extracted onto the root (as in /), no signature checks involved. Yes it runs linux. Just be aware that their new mediatek ones apparently have secure boot, from what I've read it just comes with the chip and going along with that is easier than asking mediatek to disable it somehow, idk.You can also disable online features with an undocumented config flag, it just replaces the shop tab with your local library.I have Kobo Clara 2E personally. I didn't bother with modding other than one called "Steel Series", it just makes it so that locally loaded books also appear in "Series" section based on the respective metadata field.
>>107269410don't forget to get one of these.
>>107269410I love my Kobo Clara I got for 80 bucks 2-3 years ago, but it uses a micro USB charging port and I've never tried synching shit over wifi. Also no SD slot, but I really doubt you'll have storage space problems ever unless you're stockpiling manga. Normal text ebooks take no space at all
>>107269485i am also looking for kindle like device. can we load pirated books to kindle? does amazon have ability to brick/disable my kindle if they find out about pirated books?
>>107269451>then jailbreak it and throw koreader on itKoreader really worth it?
>>107269742>does amazon have ability to brick/disable my kindle if they find out about pirated books?they can do it for whatever reason, just don't get an e-reader with internet access.I have a PocketBook Basic 4, it's comfy.
OnyxBoox. They run Android, and have a good built in reader. Literally best in class and cheaper than alternatives.
>>107269927>PocketBook
>>107269742Those are the only books on mine. I put my Kindle Paperwhite on airplane mode and use calibre to manage my library. No issues so far kek. Just let a cheap kindle and wait for a jailbreak if the prev owner kept it up to date. Shouldn't have to wait more than 6 months tops (and it doesn't really matter, I never bothered after using calibre).>HackableYNGNI
