I made it dual boot with Mint, used its wizard to install the exact same wifi driver (Broadcom) from the install CD, and while Mint ran it never lost signal in the same location. I don't know if the wizard was just a GUI for ndiswrapper, but it just fucking worked. XP had no magical crapware installed but it consistently lost signal and had to be reconnected over and over. To this day I don't know why. This was before all the Broadcom drivers got in the Linux kernel and getting them to work could be dodgy.
