Apple demonstrated that there are significant gains by physical moving the RAM closer to the CPU which increased speed. Ironically, this somewhat reduces the need for more ram, or at least more ram always being the answer. That doesnt mean Apple's stingy base models are the solution, but you wont necessarily need huge amounts either.
