It comes with very good software pre-installed and if you need something else that is paid you can very easily pirate it by downloading it from websites such as MacBB. Even paid browser extensions.
I downloaded a photography editor from there and runs with zero issues. It's not like on iPhone where you can't download anything.

Is /media like your SSD mount point itself or /media/VMs?
And why do you use /media to begin with? It's supposed to be a location where automatically mounted filesystems appear. You know, MEDIA such as diskettes and CD-ROMs and USB-drives and such. Mount your SSD under /mnt/ssd instead.

There is no general solution because it's named that way by the program, not windows. I think it was only in a windows 11 update that they did it for explorer too though.

Right now I physically share an SSD between my desktop and laptop. When I'm home, I connect it to the power/sata cables in my desktop. Then when I have to leave with my laptop, I take it out and use an SSD/USB adapter.

This feels wrong and slightly inconvenient. Is there a better way to share an SSD between my desktop and laptop?
>remote file sharing/cloud
I don't want this. Firstly, I don't want to leave my desktop computer on when I am gone for a few days, and my network is a bit shoddy anyway. Second, taking the SSD with me is basically having an exact copy of my computer. Same OS, same environment, same files. I can even reopen the same firefox session I had last time. Like pic related? That's what I already use to connect to my laptop. I could technically plug it to my desktop via USB as well, but isn't SATA better? That's the reason I take it out of the case to put it into my desktop.

I feel like I'm being stupid.
>>
>>107288530
>feel like
you are, i think, taking risk with your precious data.

the speed is faster with SATA but the trade-off is risk that you will kill the drive unplugging and replugging.

you could also - by spending money - get USB 3.2 gen 2x2 going on the desktop.

3.0 / 3.1 Gen 1 / 3.2 Gen 1 = 5Gbps
3.1 Gen 2 / 3.2 Gen 2 = 10 Gbps
3.2 Gen 2x2 = 20 Gbps

it would be much faster than USB 3, you'd probably have to get a USB PCI card, would only see the speed increase on the desktop unless your laptop has already one of the later USB versions.

of course the external USB case for the drive might have to be updated to a faster spec as well so - might as well do this with an m.2 nVME drive instead.

IcyDock has a 20Gbps "USB C External NVMe M.2 Enclosure with USB C 3.2 Gen 2x2" i find locally for $25 then you'd need to source the rest.

i did this with a Windows-to-Go install for a while and it worked well on old USB3 but the disk speed was laggy, i'd go with faster if it did it again (new computer has the higher speed USB in it).

best of luck and above all, have fun

>This feels wrong and slightly inconvenient.
It is inconvenient.
It's also wrong, the SATA interface is a good one and quite robust but it still has an insertion cycle count and manually ham fisting your plugs onto it like a retard is worse than using a hotswap backplane to insert it.

If you're not using a 2.5" bay to slide the SSD in, but are fingering wires and the plugs, you're seriously doing it wrong and jeopardizing your data.

>>file sharing
>I don't want this.
Valid.
Network is great for files locally but when travel is involved, externals are ideal. No reliance on a third party. Third parties copetards conveniently ignore are VPNs, ISPs, and potentially mobile data plans. Carrying a drive with you eliminates the need to piggyback off of those to access your files kept at home.

Just put the SSD inside an enclosure like this and use it over USB with both machines.

Yeah, but the enclosure I linked is a good one.
UASP with high IOPS performance to deliver good enough random reads/writes negating the desire to want to go native SATA.

OP hasn't mentioned any valid reason to want to keep plugging it into SATA. Maybe he's using an old PC without USB3 ports or something and needs to go internal SATA for it to not be slow as fuck, but considering that would mean that he's using a desktop that is over 10+ years old and that's not very likely.

Okay, I'm gonna stick with the enclosure option. I didn't realize that USB nowadays can be faster than SATA. I'm really surprised. Probably also why I can't find any e-sata enclosures anymore. My desktop does not seem to have USB3.2 gen2 so I'll buy an expansion for that.

In an ideal world I wish I could stick my SSD into a computer like an SD card, but I guess a USB isn't so different now. I did see this cool hot-swap NVMe tray but then I realized it would still damage the contacts and it's also super expensive and wouldn't work with my laptop.

Anyway thanks for the advice.

Cont.

I was also being a dumbass and somehow thought USB was more flimsy/dangerous than securing it inside my PC, without knowing how delicate SSD contacts were and doing more damage by constantly swapping. Initially I was asking for the sake of convenience but now I've learned to be more careful.

>In an ideal world I wish I could stick my SSD into a computer like an SD card
With a hot swap rack you can do just that, even with 3.5" HDDs.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0B7NJC5YM

The fact this isn't more common knowledge is sad. It's more common in Japan and they have PC cases with hot-swap built in but they also value physical media more than other countries so it's not surprising they're more aware of storage options.

In America, case manufacturers have a fetish for removing the 5.25" bays so the golden era of hot swap racks is kind of tailing off towards its end, with fewer being made and prices going up, but they're still awesome to have if you use SATA drives.

Modern "enthusiast" PC user or gamer is a child or manchild that only has an NVMe these days, though, and big tech keeps pushing STREAM STREAM CLOUD CLOUD CLOUD so unless people wake up, local storage (and convenience products like hot swap) is unlikely to make a big comeback for normies.

Depends on how long the data is needed, but in general SSDs fail in an all or nothing manner
If the drive was properly zeroed or similar it is probably good for use right now, use checksummed files (7zip/zip(?)/etc) and check the integrity periodically to be sure
badblocks should also be good but takes about a month
>>

Wouldn't hot-swapping still damage the contacts like the other anons said?

Can a USB cable be too good for what it needs to do? I've been using this cable https://amzn.eu/d/gYkWtQ9 with my controller (Dualsense edge) for the past 6 or so months, when all of a sudden it started disconnecting with every little movement. Turning the cable upside down usually fixed this for a bit, but eventually it came back again. Tried getting another one, but same exact issue as the first one, so I thought it might be the controller's usb port, but using a random, lower quality cable I had lying around (USB C to USB A instead of C to C) completely fixed the issue.

The best quality drives are going to be internal Pro and totl enterprise models. They generally don't sell those in external enclosures any more. Of course if you're just hoarding and not constantly overwriting the same sectors, you don't need the best. Multiple drives in the same enclosure is always nice for RAID but not strictly necessary. Checksum accounting filesystems like btrfs or zfs catch drive errors, which means less data lost over time.

I think you misunderstand what that means.
VPN tunnels work at the IP level, they know nothing about websites.

>>107293959
It could be that your cable (or port) is strictly USB PD and refuses to power anything without a handshake.
If this is the case, then any USB A-to-C cable should work.
I have several USB lamps that have USB C but can't speak PD and only charge with an A-to-C cable.

You want a proxy not a VPN. Use FoxyProxy to set policy per URL / tab group. Lots of VPN providers offer proxy service.

>Lenovo Thinpad

>Lenovo Thinkpad (official, compatible, checked specific medl) docking station

I plug in DP to DVI to a DVI between the docking station's display port and the screen's DVI port, it works.
I plug in a HDMI cable into the docking station's HDMI port and connect it to a HDMI monitor, the monitor doesn't display anything
I use the same cable and plug it in directly to the Lenovo Thinpad's HDMI port, it displays

What the fuck is this?
>>
>>107295896
And I am literally using the exact same set up - DP to DVI on the docking station + HDMI on the docking station, exact same Lenovo docking station model and it works on my work Thinpad. They're connecting to the same monitor models too. Literally the only difference is that mine is a T14s (Gen 5) and my work laptop is, I think, P15v.
>>
>>107295896
Could be a power supply issue. HDMI may need extra power unlike DP which has power throughput.

Are you plugging in DP + HDMI simultaneously? Did you test with ONLY HDMI connected? Is your docking station powered via the laptop or does it have its own power supply? Maybe even try lowering the refresh rate on your monitor to lower power consumption

Otherwise idk could be a driver issue or just dead port.

The dock itself has firmware updates. Depends on the model. Idk what model your dock is.

And does your dock need a power supply? Some people think it only needs power from the laptop.

OK, then it's definitely not PD related.
Take your controller apart and inspect the USB port where it is soldered to the circuit board, there may be cracks in the soldering that become visible when you wiggle it.
Some cable could have a different fit and forces a slightly better contact of the port with the board.

How difficult is dual-booting Windows and Linux?

Not sure I trust linux to not overwrite windows because of some stupid reason.
>>
>>107302760
Not very. You just shrink the volume in disk manager to create unallocated space and then install a distro of your choice to that unallocated space.
>>
>>107302850
Ok, so it's just another partition then, cool.

How do I get into the boot options / installer if I can't access them with the usual key during boot? Windows keeps starting up before my keyboards / BIOS can communicate. Not sure I can even access BIOS settings now without disconnecting the drive, and I don't want to risk hot-swapping to do the linux install.
>>
>>107302899
It's going to depend on your motherboard. Look up the hotkey for your motherboard. You'll probably have to turn off secure boot and fast boot in the bios before installing another OS. It should do a lot of the partitioning automatically. You'll be using the grub2 boot-loader after it installs to help you select which OS you want to boot into.

Sometime I encounter a web article that I would like to make a local copy of.
Very often, the article will contain links to other web articles or pdfs or videos or whatever that it would be nice to have local links to.
Is there any software that will download a webpage, follow any links (internal and external), save those pages, adjust the links when saving the page to point to the now local file locations? Perhaps recursively saving pages up to a specified depth to avoid saving nearly all of the internets?

We just had a thread about it, of course it got deleted.
https://desuarchive.org/g/thread/107280319

tl:dr; 4chan has an asinine "threat score" detection. It also uses Cloudflare bot detection. You trip up either of the two and the site will think you are using a residential proxy and puts a temp ban on your USER ID for 24H. But it DOES NOT ACTUALLY BLOCK YOUR IP, you can post from Chrome just fine.

The big problem is that even if you pass the Cloudflare bot detection, if your threat score is above zero, the site code will run a
mt_rand(0,9) < 3
on whether it should block you or not. If you try posting images, it does a
if(mt_rand(0,1))
check as well. So, basically, it randomly blocks you for no reason. Got to make sure people buy passes!

There's also an ASN whitelist, so this does not affect every ISP.

Also your threat score is lower as long as you consistently post every 15 minutes, so if you have a dynamic IP you may be able to post fine for a while then get that message for no reason.

How do I pick good premium wireless headphones? I would prefer non-Bluetooth ones but the USB dongle headphones seem to be always having issues with "interference" somehow, no matter what device I use them on, or how many other USB slots are filled on said device. My main priority is basically range + no "interference" issues (like the USB ones restarting, or Bluetooth ones losing signal). But whenever they write the range is like 15-20 meters, they barely last up to the bathroom next to my bedroom, literally just one wall in between. I don't care about the "quality" of the sound as long as it sounds at least as good as cheap 10 dollar BT headphones, I can't tell better quality of audio apart anyway.

If you want a 1:1 clone of the disk, probably the best way would be
lsblk
dd if=[dev/sdX] |tar [options you want] |[compression you want, zip/xz are decent for >>HDDs, lz4 is faster] [location you want]
OR dd if=[dev/sdX] of=[path/to/folder/image.iso[if you want it as file and not overwrite the disk, otherwise /dev/sdX]]

NVMEs will be nvmeXnYpZ
If you want specific partitions for sd it will be sda3 for the 3rd partition of the first "disk"
You can use timeshift/similar to get all but the bootloader and/or root

The disk image is not efficient to create though

In the last few months searching message history on Microsoft Teams (free) has been completely broken, and it doesn't seem like it'll ever come back. So, are there any decent alternatives for Microsoft Teams, with the ability to import full chat history (messages and files) from Teams, and that have fully searchable chat/file history between you and users? Preferably that are free, too?
Unfortunately Discord seems relatively good in the search history regard, but I'd rather not use it more than I have to since I just despise it on a fundamental level, and it also seems quite annoying to import Teams chat history onto a discord server.
I just hate it, I can't even search and find messages I wrote 5 minutes ago on Teams, let alone hours, days, weeks or years ago. It's fucking awful. I'm also not expecting the chat history exports to go all too well, considering this. my landlord had my house power washed with a bleach/water mix without telling me and it ruptured the old paneling on the window near my PC - allowing some of the water to spray into the room directly over my PC through a tiny crack
Miraculously I decided to shut off the PC the night before for literally no reason, I never do that unless for updates or if I’m cleaning. Also luckily, the top fans of the PC seemed to be laying in a way that minimized any pathway for the water to enter
To put this in perspective there was literally water pooling around the top edges of my case in a few small spots so there was significant amount of spray happening - but the small amount of residue in picrel (zoom in to the top edges of the motherboard) is the only sign that I can find that any liquid entered into the case
It has been two days since this happened and I haven’t noticed any performance issues or sounds coming from the board. There’s no marks of any liquid on the top of the GPU or CPU fan either so I’m not worried that any fell through the heatsink onto the pcb at all
What I am worried about is the effect of bleach on the batteries at the top of the motherboard (you can see them in the pic)

Should I be worried?
I have a warranty on the motherboard and could return it for coil whine if you guys think I should

Extracted my saved links via an extension debug console trick mentioned on Github. Now have everything in a CSV file. Found a replacement extension that does the same thing, too. The new one wants a keyed JSON to import everything. Problem: generating one with the online tools I can find (I know jack shit about any of this) switches the order of the saved links around. In the CSV each has an ID column/field with an incomprehensible number that somehow corresponds to the chronological order they were saved in, oldest being smallest. So I can flip the CSV from sort by ascending to descending easily enough, but when I try to convert it to a keyed JSON, I can't figure out how to apply the same sorting. Anyone able to throw me something that might help?
>>
>>107308355
>incomprehensible number
a integer in UNIX time format maybe?

Can you make some new links in the new tool and then reveres engineer the JSON from that to see how it does its sorting so you can fake it?

Ubuntu.
Flatpak is optional. Snaps are optional and avoidable. Most software that can be installed on Ubuntu needs to be installed with apt from the Terminal. Apt is excellent. Anons bitch about Snaps, just don't use the Snaps store and you are good to go. A small amount of software requires flatpak, most of everything else needs or at least has apt as an option, sometimes pip (python-related installer).

Ubuntu comes with Xorg and Wayland, you can switch between the two depending on which ends up working better for you.
System utilities and tools for debugging and troubleshooting and stuff are all command-line based.
Then there are some must-have utilities that are not installed by default on any new Ubuntu installation, like Stacer, CPU-X, shutter, and testdisk.

probably does something like reduces images to a perceptual hash, a small string that is a simplified version of "what it looks like", and stores them in a tree of hashes organised by "similarity". then when you give it a new image, it's hashed and you can just follow the tree to find images that are "similar".
i'm sure it's more complicated than that, but i'm not an expert, and even if i was, it'd need simplification anyway

downloaded the windows 11 iso from the media creation tool, made it a bootable usb with rufus, then the installation gets to 100% and it reaches the part where it restarts the computer and I can proceed without the usb, then windows says it's installing and getting things ready, everything fine up to this point, then it restarts and gives me an error "The computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error. Windows installation cannot proceed" every time I restart it, tried with a different usb and had the same issue, tried with a windows 10 iso and on the part where it's getting things ready after installing it has a blue screen of death and then the same error as before.
Considered it a hardware problem, but then I tried installing linux mint and it works with no issues
Any idea how to get it to install windows?

Nope, not a timestamp, number of digits changes too. Starts at/oldest is 30874, most recent is 4242612815. If I were going to guess I'd say it's something assigned from the old Pocket backend, column name is "id". Converting to a keyed JSON uses that column for the sort key or whatever the right term is, and goes in ascending order. All I want to do is flip it over to show the most recent first.

I kept every laptop I ever owned except for my very first one, which got destroyed against my will. I keep the oldest one at my parents', so when I come for my bi-monthly visit, I have a backup laptop available with all my settings and stuff. Then I take the second oldest one with me, as the very oldest one only has barely 8GB RAM (and I used it to experiment with changing components and stuff). Otherwise I keep the second oldest one next to my bed, as a secondary screen, and I also have it linked via a long HDMI cable around the walls to the kitchen, where it's using an otherwise unused computer screen. My last/newest personal laptop I have almost always on my desk, basically never moving,. as a secondary screen with keyboard and mouse interface that swaps between the laptop and my desktop PC. Then I have my work laptop on the other side of the desk, with its won keyboard and mouse which switch between the desktop PC and the work laptop.

Basically, I keep my old laptop everywhere I am around to mark my territory, like a dog with its urine.

So I've been dual booting with an internal and external drive. For whatever reason if I unplug and reconnect the external drive, I can't boot it up anymore. My BIOS recognises the external drive so I suspect that unplugging the drive messes in some way with the boot loader? The bootloader I'm using is rEFInd. I also tried to boot from the external drive on 2 different computers with no success.
Does anyone have any idea how I can avoid this issue in the future? I'd like to not have my OS basically implode from something as simple as unplugging the external drive.
>>
>>107311505
*I guess* some UEFI implementations remove any relevant boot entries when the drive is not there. As in when there's no drive containing the specific partition UUID of the EFI system partition -> all relevant boot entries are gone.
You didn't mention anything about boot entries but I guess rEFInd is the only thing you ever want to boot. Is/was rEFInd located on the drive you removed?
>>
>>107311687
>some UEFI implementations remove any relevant boot entries when the drive is not there
That seems to be the case. I tested by installing the OS again but with GRUB this time (on the laptop) and bootloader does remain even if I disconnect the external drive. I do have a new issue of being held hostage by GRUB rescue because I now can't boot to my normal OS on the Laptop even when making the proper adjustments to boot order. I'll figure that out later.
>Is/was rEFInd located on the drive you removed?
Didn't check, sorry. At least now I know it's something with my PCs BIOS (?) that wipes the bootloader if the device is not present? Is there any solution for that, or is it entirely dependant on the specific hardware/BIOS?

>>
>>107316880
Depending on the sophistication of the tv:
>viewing habits
>motion detection (so they can weigh it, aka if there is "near" motion it means you are sitting in front of the tv and the data is worth more than "far" or "no" motion which means you just have it on to listen too)
>if there is a microphone it will be on 24/7 to listen to keywords, all records have been demonstrated to be stored, even if they tell you they delete them apparently. Amazon says that they only store interaction with the device but when someone was murdered they found out that Alexa just records 24/7 and Amazon just hangs onto it for "training purposes".
>All information gathered will most likely be owned by them to train whatever onboard or cloud-based AI they have
>hooked up to a computer
I honestly wouldn't do that if you value your privacy, just get a nice monitor
>screenshots and all that shit?
Yup and also since your smart tv has versions and updates, they are vulnerable to hacking, they save snapshots of information and programs on your smart tv, etc. Unless you're a psychopath or a boomer and the majority of your time you are watching tv, I'd say a smart tv is worth it. If you aren't, grab a monitor: it's more secure, its more private, its less of a hassle when it needs to update.
>>
>>107317081
Oh and some of the motion detector cameras in tvs are legit just cameras, they say "motion detection sensor" because they know the customer aversion to having a camera in their tv watching them but a lot of them are just black and white or color cameras that basically just watch you while you watch tv. So I'd avoid any sort of "motion detection" in a tv if this is something you are worried about.
