i dont like it, plus kde is as good by itself as it is. i used xp and 7 themes a 4funsies few times but i hate looking at them, its nostalgic for 15 minutes and then its just ugly)

i would probably try out some tiling wm, those look really good but i hate the tiling shit as i have no use for it, i mainly (95% time) use one main window (browser/fullscreen game) and i dont like large monitors so..
i tried out hyprland twice and it just pissed me off far more than i had benefit of ''it looks nice and cool''.

vista themes look so good on god. so much nostalgia
>>
>>107297069
if there is anything i feel about vista, it's nothing, i do not feel nostalgic for vista, i thought i have made this clear
closest thing that'll make me nostalgic for the vista is the thousands of themes i have seen for xp that attempt to recreate it, the one on picrel being the one i am the most fond of, i have always wanted to make my thing look like vista accurately and so with vistathemeplasma i guess my dream has come true, though not in the shape i expected it to be
>>
>>107297086
though, really for the most part, i don't really long for the past ui/ux to come back mostly because accurate recreations of it are readily accessible to me, i do wish that a good xp theme port was finished though

yes my "server" (decom'd laptop with a busted screen i use as a homelab) is on arch because i thought it'd be funny, OS age is like 500 days or something

moving to debian though, got quite annoyed at nothing working and me needing to tinker everything, god damn you machine.

Using any standalone WM instead of a full DE will feel a lot quicker. I've mostly used bspwm on this desktop and I really like it with my dual monitor setup. Besides messing around with fvwm I really haven't tried any other floating WMs with on this PC.

Things have changed a lot. Windows/macOS desktops used to be heavily discriminated against, and now we mostly just ignore them, although they sometimes get attention if they have a nice wallpaper lol. KDE was extremely shit, and now it seems to be the most common DE, replacing gnome. All this vista themed bullshit really irritates me. Same will all these desktops using twm and fvwm—or whatever they’re using to mimic classic desktop environments.

The passage of time is unforgiving. I miss the days of tiling window managers.
Death to stacking window mangers.
Death to desktop icons.
Death to multiple clocks.
Death to multiples bars.
>>
>>107306409
hey if you are willing to commit treason against the entire nation of kekistan i suggest going to r/unixporn, there are higher standards there and tiling wms are dominant there if that's your pick
me personally i see them as overdone, they all look the same to me, for the most part they all follow the exact same tropes like the same gnome 4x esque bar, one of the vim color schemes like gruvbox or catpuccin
interestingly enough the wildest rices i have ever seen actually come from windows users, at least when it comes to the period before mid-2010s, some of the people are still keeping the spirit of insane pre-2010s ricing alive like one of my dudes who is actually responsible for ice2k.sys

you're not missing the days of tiling window managers, you just don't know the right place to look or are too hell bent to stay on the sinking ship that is 4chan (ive had some people who were there before i materialized here tell me) while i dont give a single fuck if i have a discord account while also using 4chan.

I do follow r/unixporn, but I never use Reddit so it’s kind of pointless. You’re right about the uniformity there. The desktops with the most updoots are often hyprland with the same tired color schemes and programs. Although I’ll admit, there are some very good desktops that are creative and unique.

ideological battles prevent such thing from happening, xlibre has alienated a lot of people and the debian team have a particularly loud stance
>>
>>107306961
Interdasting. I don't follow such matters closely and only pick up bits here and there. How did XLibre alienate people? My entire understanding of anything related to any of that is that Xorg people now work on Gayland and still hold the domain name and IP for X11, so XLibre forked in a similar manner to OpenOffice/LibreOffice. That's literally everything I know about it.

I spent years working out a perfectly ZEN minimal system where I had everything I needed and everything worked as perfectly as it gets. I RELAXED and then suddenly one day NNNNNNNNNNN and nothing made sense anymoar. Why would I need new things just for the sake of having new things when the old things were as close to perfect as it gets? I had an all ncurses base system with ALSA mixer into JACKD making music with all kinds of synths and live instruments and mics into Ardour on a realtime kernel, but no, WE NEED NEW THINGS so the RED HAT JEWS can justify their paychecks and generate moar for their head corporate jews.

FUCK THAT
FUCK THEM

FUCK GAYLAND

even if there's "perfectly good reasons" for others to use it.
>>
It's funny. One thing I was looking for in a tiling manager was rounded corners and blurry transparency. Hyprland came with both out of the box. Now if only I can figure out customizing the bar and figuring out how to "move" windows in Hyperland.

Unixporn is hardly any different and in fact is just total crap. The crux of the problem is that nobody knows dick all beyond 'stealing dots' and picking pre-existing shit off the shelf. To 99% of the people posting on unixporn (or here even) simply being able to do the bare minimum of editing the CSS of a GTK theme is something they look up to, like it's some crazy elite hacker level skill.

There's like a tiny, TINY handful of people that actually make anything. ice2k.sys shits on basically everything else posted now because the creator is willing to fork programs to get what they want. No one on unixporn does that at all, they're all too busy copying and pasting eww configs. Simply mentioning the fact the GTK inspector exists is like a revelation to them.
>>
>>107310711
>Do you consider the initial setup to be complicated?
It really depends on which WM you choose, but overall I wouldn't say that setting up a WM is too terribly complicated.
>>
>>107310584
It's hard not to hate them when you are minding your own business having a personally perfect system worked out and then one day they just take it away from you and tell you it's best for you and tell you you'll take it and like it and tell you nothing at all because they are on the other side of the Kafkaesque wall.

Now, most people when they say or read the world KAFKAESQUE they think about turning into a bug while they sleep but that's because they haven't read THE CASTLE.

So, for me the:
>x11/wayland debate
isn't about technical matters which I do not even understand to begin with, or ideological sides in an ethereal war (per se). It's purely PERSONAL. I was just minding my own business, not bothering anyone else with my own personally pieced together system, and some random DAY
THEY
took it
AWAY.
And anyone who knows shit about fuck knows that AUTISTS hate disruptions of established patterns. Perhaps it's easy for some KID who wasn't even born back then to have no problem because by the time they started using *their* own shit it was already distant history and they were on MUH NEW from their own day one. In such cases it's easy to look back and JUDGE.

I am RETARDED and barely know how to operate a computer at all. That setup is essentially what I used for many years many years ago. Xfce or lxde/lxqt would likely be a good replacement for you if you want to use a stacking window manager. I prefer tiling wms like i3/sway. However there are even lighter and simpler stacking window managers like JWM, TWM, iceWM, and tinyWM, which are more interesting to me and align closer to my values.

Something like 25 years ago when I very first got GNU PLUS LINUX, I got Libranet because my research showed it to be relatively easy for total noobs to get installed and set up. I started digging around in the menus just trying things out and saw xpenguins, clicked it, and GLORY! It was at that moment that I knew GNU PLUS LINUX would be my home. I keep the blood and angels turned off, because I don't want to see my little screen frens get hurt. Libranet had them turned off by default in a config so I didn't even know it did that until a few years later when I moved to pure Debian.

KWin is rather buggy; there's a flicker when the screen resumes from suspension, but that also happens on X11, so it's KWin's fault.

I can't use Links to *post* to 4chan but it can read 4chan. Much faster and less intrusive, this way. Pages load all the way and most of the time I don't even realize the adds are there until I switch to the javoids-on cookies-on browser.
