ALSA documentation in general is very poor, yes. The recommendation is to target PulseAudio for casual apps and JACK or PipeWire for professional apps.

Both? LTS on server (with containers that are sometimes based on a rolling release) and rolling on desktop.

>>
>>107384692
I don't want to download a gigabyte of updates every day just to have the most up to date version of libnigger64 and I don't mind outdated packages, and If I really want something new I install it through containers, simple as. LTS is the way for sane people.
>>
>>107384725
The reason is having a stable base. It's fine if a container falls over, it's not fine if my base system or kernel or Systemd, etc, falls over.
>>
>>107384836
And yes, I know stability is about API/ABI stability and says nothing about this at all and indeed I have run into bugs on stable Debian systems. Having that stability guarantee though means I know the base system isn't ever going to shift out from under me. It's always going to be as stable as it was when I spun the system up (barring any accidental regressions that rarely come from backports or security updates, etc, but can sometimes on occasion cause issues).
>>

If youre able to connect to it through ssh then it means the system didn't completely crash and you can probably get some info from dmesg while if you cant connect then you likely had a crash or kernel panic

GNOME has no server-side decorations so Alacritty's toolkit is providing that garbage so that you at least have something. You can't fix this, either GNOME has to add server side decorations (never happening) or somebody has to add libdecor support to Alacritty.

Here's from the config file.
If you want to change the windows title you'll need to edit your .bashrc and so on.

He wants GTK decorations instead of the crap ones drawn by the toolkit but GNOME doesn't support server side decorations so that's not possible unless the toolkit that Alacritty uses adds libdecor support for fake client-side rendered server-side decorations.

I'm currently running Ubuntu and I'm wondering whether to upgrade my Ubuntu version or switch to Debian. I'm assuming that Debian might be a bit more lightweight and give me quicker boot times, since Debian doesn't have snapd, and maybe there's other random systemd services that it doesn't have.

Open a Command Prompt with Shift + F10 and run

then list your disks with
LIST DISK
and for all of the disks you have which you don't want the installer to touch then run
OFFLINE DISK N
. Then you can continue with the installer.

If apt is really stuck at user input then it's not writing anything to disk so you can terminate it safely (make sure this is really the case with some process monitor like htop, i.e. check that apt isn't writing to disk before you terminate it) and then run
sudo apt --fix-broken install

To fix any broken packages, then redo your dist-upgrade command and hopefully nothing wacky happens this time

>>
>>107390192
>there's no way to just override it and ignore dependencies
That's a good thing. It's almost certainly a packaging mistake to force the packaging dependency chain to break. It should never have been allowed to get to that state in the first place and the package maintainer responsible should have their Debian developer card revoked and never allowed to touch a computer ever again.
>>107390192
APT is written in C++ (soon to use Rust too). It doesn't use Perl at all.
>>
>>107389575
>Apt is unironically the worst package manager on Linux
I don't know about other package managers, but I am very familiar with apt, and probably know some features that I think most people aren't even aware of. apt can actually be pretty powerful if configured and used correctly, though I will admit that apt's default configs are horrible. apt also lacks parallel downloads but this is solved by nala which makes apt prettier and adds a history feature similar to dnf.
>>107390192
>and there's no way to just override it and ignore dependencies.
Actually there is, you can use
dpkg --install
to force install a package directly without any dependencies, in fact apt is just a wrapper for dpkg, but like >>107390246 said, you should never ever ever do that unless someone at the debian team made a big nasty oopsie and you can't wait for them to fix it.

yes, you can. dual booting on one drive was always possible, but be aware that fixing your bootloader may come up at some point, like you'll need to use one that can boot both os's, and to make sure neither os messes with that

as a side note, your linux partition won't be "E:", that's a dos thing. some linux filesystems can be mounted in windows with additional software, but ootb windows won't recognise it. only mounted volumes in windows get a letter.

>>
>>107393264
If you haven't installed a terminal beforehand then yes you'll need to go to a tty and use pacman to install a terminal. You should just install the kde-utilities and kde-system packages to get konsole/kwake installed among other things.

Nta, how do you make sure windows doesn't mess with your boot loader? Windows doesn't give a fuck about limux and thinks it should be the only operating system installed on your computer.
>>

Good advice 2bh. I think though I might stick with Ubuntu; I'm on 22 LTS currently. I could upgrade to 24 LTS and then 26 LTS in April, which will give me some newer packages compared to what's in Debian 13.

CLI heavily preferred

basically every word that is a name of a file/"article" becomes hyperlink

can vimwiki do that?
>>
>>107393368
yea, it's always been like that. i don't really have any advice since i haven't run windows bare-metal since 7. i have a windows vm for a particular work application, but since it's a vm i don't have to worry about the bootloader. modern windows as i understand it basically gets in-place reinstalls each 6 months like it's ubuntu, so i'm not sure if that messes with bootloaders. dual booting isn't uncommon so i'm sure there's something you can do about it. worst case just learning how to set it back up will be useful. back when i was a noob (before getting into linux) i used to think a broken bootloader meant reinstalling the os. they aren't as scary as they seem. if you're keen you could also keep your linux bootloader on a usb drive or something, that way you can keep it separate even with both os's on a single drive.

even if a tty wasn't an option, like if you did something that actually can't be fixed while running the os normally, you can always use a livecd, chroot in, and install/reconfigure whatever that is from there
there are very, very few cases where a reinstall is the best/only option

Debian
There's a reason all the great distros are based off Debian, it's because you can turn it into anything you want.
>>
>>107394082
>why?
i like power savings and don't want shit to run at 200 fps when it's not needed
adrenalin on windows had radeon chill but it was kinda shit since it capped framerates immediately instead of waiting a bit and even then it only capped shit to 30 fps at least
>>
>>107393982
When I finally decided to learn and use Arch. I didn't have need for any other distro afterward.
>>
>>107394098
i run gentoo on my home server which has a 4th gen i5 in it. it's not really about being powerful enough. installing/updating things will be slower, but how often do you need an update right away? gentoo also offers a lot of binary packages for thing you either want quickly or don't care to build yourself.
>Also how often does gentoo roll updates? does it roll updates as fast as arch or is it more towards the stable side?
it's rolling-release, though the stable packages are 'slower' than arch. that said, since you built packages yourself, you can safely mix and match stable, unstable, and live packages, unlike arch

I've been looking at Huion drawing tablets because they have drivers that support Linux.
I saw that there is a specific mention of Ubuntu in parenthesis. Is that a sign that the software will be most compatible with Ubuntu/Debian based distros?
Or am I just overthinking things and the software will generally be compatible with the popular Linux distros?

My apologies for my retardation, anons.

you can disable this in steam settings - downloads - shader pre-caching.

for retarded reasons this also disables pre-encoded cutscenes for linux which a few games use. might end up with a game or 2 not playing video correctly but its a rare issue and you can just enable it again if it happens.

It's just designed for Ubuntu's package manager and they don't officially support other distros, but their drivers are available as tar balls and I see them available in the AUR for example too.
You don't even need them depending on your device because the Linux kernel usually comes with wacom and digimend drivers.
https://digimend.github.io/tablets/
If you check this link your device might already be supported and you wont need huion's proprietary drivers.

Alright then looks like I have more choices of drawing tablets. Thank you!
>>
>>107394437
It's also worth mentioning that there's a difference between having your tablet functional and having an easy way to configure it. You might wanna look at how your desktop environment supports rebinding and configuring it especially because switch from x11 to wayland broke some tools for that.
At least on KDE with wacom they seem to have added ways to map area buttons and pressure curves into a working gui again.

assuming they are separate
paid blog would be an ad if it isnt an alternative way of donating to a project

you dont "exchange money for goods and services"
donations is a solution to a problem of FOSS existing within market economy and requiring resources
its not meant to be a monetary exchange in the standard sense

you can still choose to view it that way tho, but the issue is that as far as im aware your standard econ theory might not be sophisticated enough to accurately describe whats going on

>100GB E: Drive for Bazzite
This won't be enough if you plan on gaming on it. If you plan on sharing a "game" partition between Windows and Bazzite you can forget about it unless you actually don't use Steam. Steam on Linux can't launch games from NTFS partitions. You'd have to convert the partition to ext4 or btrfs and install ext4/btrfs drivers on Windows and hope Steam on Windows supports running games from ext4/btrfs.

>>107394006
Because it's a choice between the two:
1. Compile shaders all at once, before you start the game. Game runs normally.
2. Compile shaders during runtime. Each time a unique game object appears on the screen for the first time, there will be a noticeable stutter. Alternatively, the game compiles shaders for you during load times in which case in-between game level load times will be longer.
In the first case you never have to recompile shaders unless the game updates or you switch Proton versions.
In the 2nd case, you never know when you'll encounter something for the first time and when you do you'll see a stutter. And the shaders will also be invalidated after the game updates.

It was always that though because Arch was once thought of as "hard" because you had to follow a wiki to install it but it was still doable in an hour or so by tards that can read a bit or follow a badly written YouTube tutorial or use something like Endeavour, etc.

It was never insurmountable like say Gentoo or LFS (lol, just use Gentoo instead) was so you'd get a lot of tards that don't really know what they're doing but still somehow managed to install the thing. Now it's even worse because it's even more accessible than ever.
At least Valve let babies be babies with SteamOS.

Did you know Vim used to tell you to donate money to children in Uganda?
Also GNU Parallel has a nag screen that tells you to please cite their software in your journal if you're a scientist and find their software useful.
Then there's KDE that once a year will send a desktop notification asking for donations (you can turn this off in the settings if you're a heartless bastard)

Lots of free software has some sort of advertisement or nag screen in it. The nice thing about being free software is that you have the source code and nobody can ever take that away from you. If it sufficiently annoys you then you are one single patch away from reverting it from the codebase.

There aren't too many great options. If you're a tard then Bazzite, otherwise Arch or Nobara, OpenSUSE Tumbleweed can be decent as well if the codecs mess doesn't bother you (it has the same licensing issues as Fedora which makes it hard to recommend).
