>>107404940Public fast chargers are actually more expensive per mile of range than petrol here as well. Unless you have a very small BEV, and Charge only at home, its less economical because of insanely low fuel costs. BEV's even with tax credits and only paying road tax every other year are still more expensive to keep on the road from a legal perspective, and often have much higher insurance rates (on account of being new) than an older petrol car. I am sure you save on repair costs long term, but most people do not factor that into a new car purchase.Basically electric cars just need to be better before they are viable here, or the government will need to go to war with petrol POV's by taxing them through fuel fees and taxes to make them less financially appealing.

I bought a new pure gas car this year. I kind of figured this will probably be the last pure gas vehicle I own before I jump onto hybrids. I like the way gas engines sound, even the smaller ones.EVs are kind of cool, but I would want one that I can get 500+ miles of range that costs about as much as a new Camry since I go on pretty decent road trips. The actual charging network needs to be improved as well.Until then, I'm just gonna stick to gas & hybrids.
>>107406890I bought a prius last month.Once you go into a hybrid, you don't want to go back. Every pure ICE vehicle seems insanely archaic now mechanically.

>>1074031542010 toyota stick shift. manual locks manual windows. no blue tooth no screens.
>>107407438The only thing that bothers me about gas cars currently is the energy lost during braking. To me, regenerative braking is the biggest selling point on a hybrid, especially being able to drive one pedal. Also, I guess the auto start-stop feature is annoying. My infotainment actually keeps track of it, and in the 90 minutes my engine has been off, it has only save about 0.4 gallons. It doesn't make much sense on a two litter engine. I would like to eventually look into disabling it entirely. Congrats on the Prius though, I really like the new ones.

I know there are some vehicles with good classic automatics and even some good belted CVTs but look at the inside if some hybrid transxles and there is nothing to them. No torque converter, no clutches, no belts, just gears, motors and fluid.Even on the engine themselves there are no accessory belts. All replaced with electric versions. Even the engine starter is MG1 in the transaxle. If Automakers could figure out how to make batteries more replaceable and plentiful. The scorge of terrible transmissions could go away.

I'll be interested in an EV when all the street parking in the country has public chargers on it, so I can plug in my car anywhere I park it and leave it plugged in indefinitely. Until that happens, gasoline is the way.

>>107408233i didn't know all street parking in the country had gas pumps readily availablethat's kinda neat

>>107408297Not him but limited range compared to ICE would be offset if you could easily charge anywhere you happened to stop. And I think this will become the norm eventually.Maybe not every single parking spot but at least every parking spot close to a street light which is a big portion of them.
>>107408362street parking makes me think this is for daily driving, not road tripstypical daily range on an EV is generally pretty decent if you're going for a good one and means you can drive the full range at the start of any given regular day with a home charger whereas with a gas car you have to generally remember to fill up when convenient depending on usage after commute/etc.

>>107408389I was assuming he didn't have his own driveway/garage so couldn't install a home charger.Idea is to charge every day or at least every couple of days so you only have to use fast chargers a few times a year on long trips. This would offset going to a fuel station maybe 25 times a year even if you fast charge 6 times and it takes 4 times longer.
>>107408408>I want a 60s Cadillac EVThere was a company near me that retrofitted old classic cars into EV's.Unfortunately they make for lousy EV's because there is no place to put large batteries and the conversion cost nearly as much as a brand new Model 3.I think modern EV's could develop some more funky shapes as batteries become better so aerodynamic efficiency will no longer be as important. The platforms look like skateboards so you could build pretty much anything on top.
>>107408203Out of all the wrenching I've done, I've never replaced any complex electronics. Some Coils, MAF, temp and map sensors but never anything major like an ECU of TCMPlenty of starters, water pumps and alternators have been replaced tho.Not really understanding why people think electronics are somehow the major weak link, even if it comes to it I'd much rather replace an inverter underneath the hood rather than drop a whole transmission. >>107409557What I meant is fast charge is only done to about 70-80% cells capacity then the rest is done at a much lower current. hence while going from 20% to 90% might only take three hours, going from 90 to 100 will take another three.

EV might as well stand for Ealwaysonline Vehicle.I have nothing against electric engines per se, in fact I live in a large city in a small European country, so an electric car would be pretty much perfect for me. Most of my driving is sub 50mph and even the occasional roadtrip is usually below 100 miles long. The problem is that nobody makes normal cars with electric engines.

>>107408472>I was assuming he didn't have his own driveway/garage so couldn't install a home charger.Precisely. Houses with driveways are very much the minority over here, so like most people I rely on street parking. But I'm not going to plug in to a nearby public charger and hope that it's available that day every three weeks and then come pick up my car three hours later. If I am going to use an EV, I need to be able to keep it charged in much the same way as a home charger, plug it in as you park and leave it plugged in. But on the public street parking spots. All of them, not just a limited fraction of them, or it will inevitably not be available when I need it most.

>>107417229>Would love a modern electrified VW Golf Mark II, but without the software nuisanceThis will never happen because lithium batteries can't be produced without software because they're too unstable. They're only able to make them work inside funky smart gadgets on wheels. Can't do it bro, all the manufacturers and engineers in the world haven't been able to solve this problem, maybe in 50 years we'll finally get fusion and then all the top physicists can switch to trying to invent an electric car that doesn't have more botnet software failure points than a budget non-rootable android with ads on the lockscreen.

>>107418552>bro it's electric control that means you need a bootleg ipad welded to your car's dash! it makes sense!!A button can be part of an extremely simple control circuit. The central control module can basically run bare metal firmware that reacts to dash button inputs and changes the behaviour of various systems accordingly.A tablet dash basically needs a fully fledged OS. You need layers of software, you need touchscreen drivers, you need UI libraries, you need "apps" running in userspace, you need window management, and under the hood you still need "drivers" for either individual hardware (like the AC unit) or more likely the actual underlying control module that still handles it directly. Unless that doesn't exist anymore and the infotainment itself directly interfaces with every subsystem? But in that case I'm pretty sure the AC will have its own controller with its own firmware anyway, there's no way the dash CPU is wired directly into the hardware control of everything. So I'd much rather press a button to send a signal to the control firmware than fucking tap a touchscreen on an app running on either a bootleg homegrown OS stack or stripped down android or something (and I'm not sure which is worse) and hope it sends the correct signal to the firmware controller.I realise that maybe I'm in the minority because I don't even know what the fuck android auto does exactly, but I do know that it's infotainment and having a big screen for that in your car that's independent of the hardware control is not at all the same thing as having basic functions of your car be controlled by fifty layers of software indirection.

You need layers of software, you need touchscreen drivers, you need UI libraries, you need "apps" running in userspace, you need window management, and under the hood you still need "drivers"It seems overly complex but unlike your ever changing Linux distro on your PC, most car infotainment software is often based on pretty well understood software. Automotive grade Linux just now supports the 5.5 kernal which is 5 years old.Once the software is in the car it's going to be fairly unchanging, aside from bug fixes the OS is going to be immutable and will never see any new versions of anything. If it works today it'll work forever unless there is a hardware failure.Apps that interact with the internet are a different story but it seems that recently that car manufacturers have discouraged actual apps in exchange for android auto/carplay which is basically screen mirroring from a phone. Unless Google/Apple massively changes the protocol that will also work almost forever.
>>107419574I confess I have never used an EV myself but isn't it common for EV owners to have to install software updates? I hear about it regularly. If it really is mostly static and offline, then, well I'll still complain because a touchscreen UI is fundamentally worse than buttons, but at least it wouldn't be egregious. (Still, almost all the ones I've seen make you click several times for simple things, like selecting "climate settings" to adjust the A/C instead of a normal dash where you just press the control buttons you want.)
>>107419675You mostly hear about it on Teslas as Teslas really are like an actual tablet with full software updates that change things regularly. Most of the shit you hear about EVs is from Teslas because they are the most common EVThey are the exception however. Most of your others have head unit software that is going to be relatively unchanging. I do agree with the button thing tho, they are just better for getting at things without fumbling, I understood however why they aren't always present and it's because they are redundant from a business and design perspective.
>>107418473youre just describing modern manufacturing in general. nothing of what you stated is exclusive to ev. your 2025 f150 is going to have an ipad in the center console that gives you popup advertisements for the mcdonalds at the next turn out, and an internet connection to do "software updates" (refresh the mcdonalds location registry)
>>107403154your "new" ev looks like a third world piece of shit. what an ABSOLUTELY disgusting interior. so cheap and nasty. you are fucking moron, op.
>>107403154I don't have a car. I don't want to be a slave and drive myself and other people around.
>>107403333W A S T E D D I G I T SASTED I G I T S
>>107403154I only drive analog panel with physical buttons. I don't want to look to a screen when I'm driving and even worse trying to touch a screen while driving. Cuckest shit ever
>>107403154I have an ebike that I use like a car does that count?
>>107419024that's trueI just meant its clearly meant to imitate a Tesla by the design If anything that thing will be better quality than a Tesla
>>107419412On larger and newer cars they fold in for space.I have a button to fold my mirrors in on the Cedric to fit in smaller spaces. It also just helps prevent them from getting hit by idiots that can't park.My car is to long for many spaces, and it's too wide with the mirrors out for compact space widths. I also admit I will fold them in before parking to fit closer to a wall or pole and give more space to the adjacent parking stall to minimize chance of door dings. My car is old, but it's nice and I don't want it messed up.
>>107421358Oh yeah makes sense. To be honest the difference between power folding and manual folding is so minimal I have literally never considered it when looking through a car's features.
>>107421498I don't care on my old car because it was a small s segment car. The cedric is e segment and pretty much a small boat. The front axle tends to be in line with the limits of the space, meaning the bumper hangs into the drive aisles when parked. Biggest car I've ever owned personally.
>>107418473I don't know where you live or what electric cars you have looked at but I'm pretty sure the issues you are describing are unique to the Tesla. My nissan leaf has mechanical door handles, mechanical A/C and a CD player. I've driven a few electric cars (different models) from the work fleet too and all of them had mechanical door handles and the same shit on the dash that all new cars have no matter the propulsion method.
>>107423701Interesting.>I don't know what electric cars you have looked atI haven't really looked at a lot of them, I'm mostly just being angry based on hearsay without actually researching the topic myself.
>>107419412Yeah you know when you have that little joystick looking thing on your driver's side door that you can adjust the mirrors with. My old dog just has a knob sticking out of either side door to adjust the mirrors with from the inside.
>>107423991lol, based and honest reply. I agree that mandatory internet connectivity and touch-screen everything in vehicles is cancer, but this is all easily avoidable while still getting the myriad benefits of electric propulsion.
>>107419114It was the adoption of brutalism that fucked up car styling in the 1980s. Judaized boomers were designing cars with only a pencil and a ruler, they would have made the wheels square if they could.
>>107403154I cannot fathom the chain of poor decisions that led you to this moment, OP.
>>107403154How tall is that center console?wtf

>>107424843Can you get them without a gigantic "infotainment" screen in general? I recognise this is popular on modern cars in general for some reason and not just EVs, but I can still easily buy an ICE from 2015 or so without one, whereas with EVs you're forced to buy pretty new (both becaues the technology is improving so much and because the battery will be shot if you buy a ten year old one).
>>107404880FUCK, that interior looks comfy
>>107403154because the future is powered by gasoline and coal
>>107403154my mechanic friend said these things are effectively worthless without the warranty because the battery costs so much and WILL need to be replaced at some pointhe said electric cars will be the future, but what we have right now will not. i guess i'm thankful for early adopters beta testing the tech for me
>>107427981I like it a lot more than many newer "nicer" cars I've sat in. Good quality cloth, open design. Not overly cluttered. Held up well considering it's 30yr old.
>>107429032>he said electric cars will be the futureyour friend is retarded then. with the housing situation of most people alone electric cars will never be viable. they are only an option for people with a garage. most people dont have the luxury of having their own parking spot
>>107403154So how do you even charge this thing if you're a normal person?Like, unless you have your own home with a garage then ???? what if you live in an apartment or if you live in a house in the city without a garage, you're supposed to plug a long ass cable to the street? I don't understand. I could stomach waiting 15 minuets for the battery to charge in some station, but waiting an entire hour, or three? that's insane.I only see EVs working in China where the government makes a lot of infrastructure and there's electric plugs everywhere, otherwise it's impossible and I don't see these things replacing normal cars ever, it's like the VR tech of cars, everyone saying is the future but never comes
>>107403154>imagine getting an EV instead of RV
>>107431083>>107431217Anyone living in suburbs can charge at home.Anyone living in an appartment is shit out of luck that's true. There's street charging but only a tiny amount of parking spaces that have that, there's almost zero chance you'll be able to charge at home so you'll have to hope you get lucky that wherever you're driving to has charging spots you can leave your car at while you do whatever. But appartments are horrible for parking in general. You have a house with 5 people living in it and the street in front of it is 2 cars wide, to the left and to the right each is another house with 5 people in it. Street parking is already gay as all fuck. One can imagine that as electric cars get more and more popular on-street charging will also expand. If one day charging spots make up most of parking spots, then having an EV while living in an appartment will become just as viable as having a car in the first place: if you can find the street parking for it then you can just charge it "at home" (overnight). The cost could be covered by a municipal subscription similar to residential parking permits are right now, so you'd be able to park and charge for free anywhere that you qualify for priority street parking as a local resident. In the meantime, you don't need a garage, just a driveway. And I may be wrong but I feel like suburb residents make up the majority of car owners, because public transport is often garbage in suburbs, while if you live in an appartment owning a car is much more annoying in the first place and you also have a lot more options for getting around inside the city. At least that's how it is in europe, dunno how american cities work since you guys have niggers.
>>107432165as rare as they are, apartments with garages do exist and those garages usually have a 12v outlet that you could charge with and its totally fine if you aren't using your car for something like rideshare every day
