Let me start this by saying that I can't write a line of C++. I find gamedev interesting, I even created small little projects here and there but the inner workings of a game engine like OpenMW is arcane magic to me.

I had a Claude Pro subscription (20$) for work, and they offered 250$ of coding credits this month, so I was like "yeah let's try".

Forked openmw on github and started a convo with Claude code. Something like "I want my character to leave trails in the snow" became a very interesting chat about how to implement such a feature without breaking everything on the way.

Now the engine :
- automatically subdivides the chunks of terrain where the character is
- raises the ground up depending on the texture (snow will be pushed up more than mud, rock won't be raised at all) with nice transitions
- pushes the ground down where the character is walking, in a trail.

I'm planning to add parallax mapping etc, to make it pretty. This is still very early, and I won't burden the devs with a merge request before making extra sure that it doesn't break everything. Also there's probably a better/smarter way to do it.

But still : if I could do it and have fun, everyone can !
Yeah it's AI, and there's many reasons to be critical of the tool but you can contribute to an open-source project that literally helps people have fun on a 20 years old masterpiece.

tl;dr : coding AIs are at the worse they'll ever be and it's a good news for modders.

This is a programmer who just hasn't written C++ before.
This is exactly the use case of LLMs.
It helps you with the boilerplate and the syntax when you are using an unknown language/framework, so you can skip studying the basics when you want to switch.
You just need to know the programming fundamentals and you can immediately start coding in (mostly) any language or framework.

OFC it wasn't much different with Stack Overflow.
Any good programmer could already do it by copy-pasting and making a collage of others code.

I had been programming "JS" for years yet I don't even know how to write a for loop in it.

AI just made it a lot faster, your code is better glued together, and it's written with best practices.

All in all a great tool but nobody is getting replaced as much as the shareholders want to.

AI is not the solution. It's fine at summarising text so you can maybe use it to explain code. But the second you try getting it to generate new code it regurgitates walls of overtly verbose code that either doesn't compile, crashes at runtime, or has subtle bugs that take effort to identify

not at all. it still takes hours upon hours of wall time to get anything substantial done. the model might work pretty fast when it's just doing a single round of inference but it takes many iterations of inference requests to get any code written and tested, and every time you send one it gets queued.

then if you're using a subscription you also get severely rate limited.
