Today, I actually felt somewhat useful. It was for doing something even an idiot could do; it was just testing cables to isolate a problem down, but still. Maybe the world is just bereft of even idiots. My "shift lead" keeps saying stuff like "If you can deal with what's going on right now, you can deal with anything that normally goes on here". As things go on, I wonder if he's just an old PO trying to keep his juniors' spirits up, or if he's adjusted to the real world and genuinely believes that his new junior is not useful yet but at least won't quit.
I have not opened this general in a year. When I was waging for corpotech this was where I spent most of my 4chan time.Since November last year when I refused RtO I have been self-employed, picking up contracts here and there to pay bills while working on my startup, gardening, and renovating my house.I have had over a year now with no sprints, no quarterly planning, no bizarre sugary DEI email spam from HR (no HR), no incompetent management bullshit, no pointless meetings (in fact, almost no meetings), no jeeted legacy code to babysit.Holy fuck life is good. That's all. Thanks for reading my blog.

But at least at work I shut the fuck up and what few times I lapse into talking about my hobbies or interests I immediately feel bad and stop. I try to keep it to "I'm going for a smoke / I'm going for a snack / I have an idea about [existing work problem] that I will action after a smoke and/or a snack". Keep your personal life on anonymous forums, I as your mere coworker don't give a fuck and know you don't care about what I've got to say about something not work-related either

>>107453202Fair. I sometimes do something other than touch computers. I got baited. Maybe that's why I finally got hired. Maybe that's why I got a clearance. Maybe that's why anyone trusts me, ever. In my personal life, when I run into a problem, I fuck around and find out and then call it a hobby instead of of the trial and tribulation I feel it to be. Like I've said recently, that kind of thing leads to a lot of "I've seen this one before" or at least "I've seen something like it, and will try my best"
Resources on reading pre-W10 NT kernel crash dumps as a human being and figuring out exactly what device was polled or called or whatever that caused the kernel panic, by what process, after what input? I've read a few of the minidumps, and while I don't feel like a proper forensics team member, a lot of fear dissipated and I don't mind spending a few years making an utter fool of myself begging for an explanation of something that supposedly everyone else knows intuitively
I realize that the role of an IT dustman is to maintain order. It sounds edgy, and I'm putting it that way intentionally; our role in the world is to make sure that work can be done by others. We do no work ourselves. That's not fine, but it's necessary. We are as necessary as dishwashers in restaurants; sure there's a machine for it, but everyone knows that thing is not enough. It is sensitive to operation, it needs maintenance, it sometimes fails. The infantry needs a long line of comms and intel people, the warships need people to handle lines, the aircraft need technicians to make sure the blades are still dull. Residences need garbagemen, and the garbagemen need mechanics, and below them all are septic tank pumpers and their own pump operators. Honestly, I'm just saying that because I miss making crazed speeches on force protection. But still, even on that, when someone asks "Why am I standing around with a rifle in a friendly port?" I have to tell them "So that someone above you doesn't have to worry about it." But more selfishly I just miss making crazed speeches.
>have to work basic bitch IT support at an air force school after a decent naval career mostly spent bitching about the naval training establishmentTo work at a special place where countless pilots (and crews) polish their skills, independent of their ranks. And all I have to do is make sure at least half of the thing turns on properly. Even then, I'm new. I'm told that it should take me a long while to even be left alone, and that the various issues cropping up are both nothing out of the ordinary, but if I'm not scared by any of it that I'll do OK. I'd wish that someone would make a crazed speech for me, but they've done it several times over. But it's still a hell of a crowd. This is, unironically, my first "real" job.
Is it true that getting put on a plan is basically an early warning notice for getting fired?
>yeah we cant get X replacement part because it's 38 years old and isnt provided by a trusted vendor anymore and also Y is broken because of 200 years of tech debt and we need it able to win a land war in asia next week and also no one knows who you even report to, and if you touch anything you will go directly to jail, and also the closest smoke pit is like 50 meters awayGod I love the MCDVs. I both hate my job and love it. On the one hand, really, all they pay me for is to make sure stuff turns on. Or on some shifts, turns off without incident. But on the other, weird stuff happens, and being able to go "No, that waterfall looks right. Should I actually ask to use the flight sim on a slow day? I still have no fucking clue how it really works but also no fucking clue what it's even supposed to look like when it works other than a few scripts and weird proprietary GUIs saying it's supposedly working.I honestly don't think it would add much useful understanding at all, but also sex with aircraft
I also have noticed recently that there's a lot of equipment I'd like to carry for ready-use; I haven't been told no or anything like that, but I worry that my rampant autism will lead me to look like a video game samurai laden down with test equipment and probes and spare wire and crimping tools and shit. I fear the the path of madness, sadness, and badness that clearly made me an at least viable hire will not just make me cringe but overtly damaging to company image if not simply bad for my hips.

Maybe if it is something particularly difficult you could begin by developing the foundations that will allow you to get there. This sounds abstract but I believe it is more practical than some meaningless platitude like "find a hobby". Only you, yourself, know who you are and what you like. >>107480027I would do it. That sounds cool as hell. The Hello Chinese app is really good for learning the language, and there are also a lot of on the fly translation tools available.
>>107479377>>107480027I worked in Taiwan for a few years without knowing any Chinese. The company was English-langage so the people at work did know English even though they were locals. They were helpful if I ever needed to do anything outside of work that would require language. Services like getting taxis and food can be done with apps so you can get by without talking. Not sure how it is in China but in Taiwan foreigners aren't allowed to drive or have bank accounts so I was heavily reliant on taxi services and using cash for everything, which can take some getting used to. If your phone ever dies you will feel truly stranded and fucked though. It's an interesting experience to live in a completely different part of the world, but I'm not sure if it will help with your boredom, you could feel pretty isolated with not being able to speak to anyone outside of work.
Why is every CI/CD system I've ever worked with terrible? They're all trying to do everything in some terrible made up yaml DSL with a lot of magic behind the scenes and 10 million environment variables used to configure the pipeline, but inevitably you encounter something that the pipeline didn't expect and now you have to just write a bunch of shell scripts to configure things you want anyways, but now you have to do it in a really hacky way instead of just running shell commands like a fucking normal person
I'm writing internal documentation (specifically for API stuff) for a project. Does anyone have any good templates for this? I have an idea on how I want to present it but I'll be honest I'm not great at writing documentations.
>>107480937>>107481258Thanks, I'll ask for more details. The big question for me is compensation. I'm a europoor so my base pay is terrible, if I can double it by taking the expat deal it would be great

>>107481541Of course I can't comment on what your compensation will be but for me I was making big money when I was in Taiwan because I was getting my regular salary + per diem + the company was paying for all my expenses, including my apartment.
