Today, I actually felt somewhat useful. It was for doing something even an idiot could do; it was just testing cables to isolate a problem down, but still. Maybe the world is just bereft of even idiots.

My "shift lead" keeps saying stuff like "If you can deal with what's going on right now, you can deal with anything that normally goes on here". As things go on, I wonder if he's just an old PO trying to keep his juniors' spirits up, or if he's adjusted to the real world and genuinely believes that his new junior is not useful yet but at least won't quit.

I have not opened this general in a year. When I was waging for corpotech this was where I spent most of my 4chan time.
Since November last year when I refused RtO I have been self-employed, picking up contracts here and there to pay bills while working on my startup, gardening, and renovating my house.
I have had over a year now with no sprints, no quarterly planning, no bizarre sugary DEI email spam from HR (no HR), no incompetent management bullshit, no pointless meetings (in fact, almost no meetings), no jeeted legacy code to babysit.
Holy fuck life is good.
That's all. Thanks for reading my blog.

to keep the insanity down
>coworker describes his weekend plans or general interests or whatever
>half-listening "At least you didn't buy a sword"
>while i am listening he describes how he is buying multiple swords and already owns a bow

I hate to talk shit about a nigga and throw stones in a glass house but goddamn. but on the other end, we both work for the same place doing the same thing and I am definitely more cringe. But at least at work I shut the fuck up and what few times I lapse into talking about my hobbies or interests I immediately feel bad and stop. I try to keep it to "I'm going for a smoke / I'm going for a snack / I have an idea about [existing work problem] that I will action after a smoke and/or a snack". Keep your personal life on anonymous forums, I as your mere coworker don't give a fuck and know you don't care about what I've got to say about something not work-related either

Fair. I sometimes do something other than touch computers. I got baited.

Maybe that's why I finally got hired. Maybe that's why I got a clearance. Maybe that's why anyone trusts me, ever. In my personal life, when I run into a problem, I fuck around and find out and then call it a hobby instead of of the trial and tribulation I feel it to be. Like I've said recently, that kind of thing leads to a lot of "I've seen this one before" or at least "I've seen something like it, and will try my best"

Resources on reading pre-W10 NT kernel crash dumps as a human being and figuring out exactly what device was polled or called or whatever that caused the kernel panic, by what process, after what input? I've read a few of the minidumps, and while I don't feel like a proper forensics team member, a lot of fear dissipated and I don't mind spending a few years making an utter fool of myself begging for an explanation of something that supposedly everyone else knows intuitively

I realize that the role of an IT dustman is to maintain order. It sounds edgy, and I'm putting it that way intentionally; our role in the world is to make sure that work can be done by others. We do no work ourselves. That's not fine, but it's necessary. We are as necessary as dishwashers in restaurants; sure there's a machine for it, but everyone knows that thing is not enough. It is sensitive to operation, it needs maintenance, it sometimes fails. The infantry needs a long line of comms and intel people, the warships need people to handle lines, the aircraft need technicians to make sure the blades are still dull. Residences need garbagemen, and the garbagemen need mechanics, and below them all are septic tank pumpers and their own pump operators.

Honestly, I'm just saying that because I miss making crazed speeches on force protection. But still, even on that, when someone asks "Why am I standing around with a rifle in a friendly port?" I have to tell them "So that someone above you doesn't have to worry about it." But more selfishly I just miss making crazed speeches.

>have to work basic bitch IT support at an air force school after a decent naval career mostly spent bitching about the naval training establishment

To work at a special place where countless pilots (and crews) polish their skills, independent of their ranks. And all I have to do is make sure at least half of the thing turns on properly. Even then, I'm new. I'm told that it should take me a long while to even be left alone, and that the various issues cropping up are both nothing out of the ordinary, but if I'm not scared by any of it that I'll do OK. I'd wish that someone would make a crazed speech for me, but they've done it several times over.

But it's still a hell of a crowd. This is, unironically, my first "real" job.

Should I finally buy a car? I've been commuting on a shitty e-bike, but it's cold out now. How do you guys feel about chinks in your workplace?
I kinda like them. They're way better than the jeets, not retardedly nepotistic, and they're competent. They just kinda want to solve problems and do shit. Kinda hard to understand them sometimes though and mandarin is such an ugly language.
>>

The problem lies in that there are actually a ton of Sha'NayNays. But no Chamars. We have advocacy groups for Sha'NayNay, scholarships, and a lot of Sha'NayNays are hired over more qualified candidates so managers can hit their DEI goals. Seminars regarding caste discrimination have been shut down because they're "hinduphobic".

It should be the same for dalits. Indians in tech have their head up their ass, I think we would agree. They should be humbled by being forced to integrate dalits as equals. The departments overflowing with pajeets should be managed by dalits.

Yesterday, I got a ticket from code monkeys to fix their Podman pipeline.
The issue is that I didn't use Podman for at least half year, and while I remember the general idea, I simply do not remember every flag and I had to live tab complete the thing and in the end we didn't complete the task.

Now, I am re-reading my notes on networking.

This makes me angry. How do I stop forgetting things?

Code monkeys work with just 1 tech or basic stack for years, and they wonder why I cannot juggle between golang, their meme fish scripts, and then write yamls and configs for every tech during a live call.

by default copilot does "modify one file at a time" where you approve the changes to each. it makes completely unrelated, useless suggestions to "fix" things. even if you tag on arbitrary shit like "provide the minimum viable solution" or "minimum amount of changes for this fix."

I don't think "developing personality" is as simple as just finding stuff to do outside of work. Rather it would be more like doing and fulfilling things you are genuinely attracted to and deeply desire. Isn't there something you ever wanted to become, or have, or perform, or achieve? Maybe if it is something particularly difficult you could begin by developing the foundations that will allow you to get there. This sounds abstract but I believe it is more practical than some meaningless platitude like "find a hobby". Only you, yourself, know who you are and what you like. I believe it is your desires that define your character.

It's time to accept that you won't be landing any cool AI/bioengineering/space development gigs. So instead of chasing the impossible, make job experience and a good tech stack your focus.
Beyond that, focus on other areas of your life. Like go to the gym, take better care of your appearance etc.

I never do high level "figure it out" style prompts. I usually tell it exactly what file to modify, what methods to create/change/delete, and that's pretty much it, and it saves me tons of time. You sound more like an indian than me, trying to dump the entirety of the cognitive, strategic thought process onto the agent instead of using it like your own personal code monkey which is what agents excel at.

This is what I try to do. I already know how I want the code changed, I just don't feel like writing it all. Another guy on my team, the lead actually, just hands off 2 line instructions to Copilot and accepts whatever it changes, and that's how our codebase, which is only a few months old for this project, is already a complete fucking mess.

>>
>>107471387
And it turns out that turns it into a pretty good language. Better than C# in many ways because you can get things like discriminated enums.
The standard library is still the retarded brainchild of someone designing silly little scripting language over 2 weeks.
We're still suffering from this, because people now use dependencies for everything and those dependencies use dozens of dependencies that then bring transitive dependencies of their own and if just one of those got taken over by some some malicious actor (happens every week), you're fucked.

But the actual language itself (with the types that Typescript adds) is really good.

a personal code monkey could figure out a 1 line fix for a frontend bug described in detail with the relevant base contexts added. the point is that it will make the correct change buried within a lot of superfluous code, and also the code that it outputs can produce "correct" behavior but generally very poor quality. it may not be noticeable if your codebase is already awful dogshit, in which case, carry on. best of luck.

You pour money out of your salary into a tax free account that will slowly go up in value due to being tied to stable stocks. Companies will also do a match depending on how good they are. So example with your example google may add 20k to it even if you decide to add 0% while shit-mart may only match up to 2% and anything after that just coming from your salary.

In reality, you shouldn't be installing a new OS on a work device. I worked in Taiwan for a few years without knowing any Chinese.
The company was English-langage so the people at work did know English even though they were locals. They were helpful if I ever needed to do anything outside of work that would require language. Services like getting taxis and food can be done with apps so you can get by without talking.
Not sure how it is in China but in Taiwan foreigners aren't allowed to drive or have bank accounts so I was heavily reliant on taxi services and using cash for everything, which can take some getting used to. If your phone ever dies you will feel truly stranded and fucked though.
It's an interesting experience to live in a completely different part of the world, but I'm not sure if it will help with your boredom, you could feel pretty isolated with not being able to speak to anyone outside of work.

funny thing I do work for a somewhat big company. the bad news is everything is silo'd as fuck and our group and stuff I can nab closeby have NOTHING. apparently everything was managed by one guy and he wrote no documentation. luckily the scope of the work isn't too big but going backwards and re-making documentations without any references kinda sucks. it's my first actual developer job so I don't know the best practices either....

New hire is coding really fast, much faster than me
I just finished the sprint last week and was done first, couple of days early
I dont know if hes a full time or a contractor( probably yes) or what salary he has( prolly much higher than me, but im not sure, maybe the same)
Realistically am i fucked?
>>
>>107483599
I'm sure more people than you are annoyed with this guy. Get together and convince your PO that the new guy is not a team player etc.

I was just joking m8.
>>
>>107483649
That isnt a good option
Im pretty sure i'm ahead of others( even tho im also new) regarding the productivity and skills so i dont think it matters that much
Over time i realized productivity doesnt matter that much in terms of keeping the job

How do you maintain your sanity?

I know it's a real first world problem, but even though my pay is high, every day I feel like roping.
I'm at a point where I just get home and sleep, no energy to boot up PC and play vidya or do anything at all.
Every now and then I find my self thinking about just quitting it all and taking a break - traveling to some country and drugmaxxing/escortmaxxing for a year or so.
>>
>>107483726
With enough meds you can somehow keep it together.

I did that my whole 20s.
After escaping this hell in my 30s, I am now the sanest person you will ever meet.
Content with simple life.
The tradeoff is I sacrificed my career for it.
But whatever.

When I was coding too fast other team members did everything in their power to slow me down
(ignoring code reviews, hiding information or materials needed for the job)
Eventually I got the memo and chilled
So probably do that, if you don't care about the success of your project

Is the job market as bad as reddit makes it out to be? I know it's bad but is it that bad?
>>
>>107485416
Instead of having 6 months of income to cover for a job loss(as in you find a job before that) you need 8-10 months depending upon your location.
>>
>>107485416
You said it yourself. Its bad, but not that bad. If you check any doom posters job history 90 percent of the time it's either
>Indian who can't get a job outside his own country and honestly expects a different country to zip him out of his shithole and pay for his visa because he made a website that shows pictures of little girls feet
>new grads who have sent out maybe 20 CVs and are having a mental breakdown they still haven't been offered 200k a year right out the bat
>mentally unwell dudes who have evolved past the previous entry (they have submitted 100 CVs) and have now decided to dedicate there full time to bringing everyone else down (seriously, I see so many that have MONTHS worth of comments just telling everyone to give up)
And my personal fave:
>the dude who INSISTS he got a really good tech job by joining the military, trust me bro it was SUPER easy now im FAANG for a bunker buster company and will NEVER need to go to war TRUST me. Make sure to tick "I accept the fact israel has a right to my body" on the application form, just a formality.
Always check post history, site is full of jeets, same here but no where near as bad as that other hellhole.
>>
>Putting in a ticket for an office that's closed for the day

>>
>>107485416
It's bad. Not that bad. Reddit is full of retards who are angry that just getting a degree doesn't instantly net you a 500k FAANG job. They're all acting like this is something new when breaking into the field has always been hard. I graduated at the height of the hiring frenzy during covid, honors first class from a top college in my country and it still took me a good 300 or so resumes and maybe 4 interviews.
>>
Is the job market really that bad?
I've gotten two invites for interview in last month without applying to anything.
I got an offer and they basically said they cannot find anyone.
I consider myself mediocre at best, but maybe 9 year experience somehow helps me.
>>
>>107485416
As a 52 year old NIGGER you kids had no idea how bad the dotcom crash was.

I seen men who basically pioneerd the world of code we had today have to take jobs in fucking mcdonalds for a year or two before getting back in the saddle. I don't think reddit existed back then, I've never been personally, but you should of seen some of the old school coding forums at the time. This was back when Internet forums were a lot more niche. Sites exploded with 10k new members begging for advice over the course of a week. It was insane.
>>
>>107485526
Reddit also invented and spread the term Vibesecssion and said Bidens economy was the best ever. Then all a sudden in a years time trump destroyed it. But when the economy was great under the first term it was him riding obamas policies. All of this doom posting has been boosted by bots. The economy has been shit since 2022 but it takes roughly 3 years to get out of a recession anyways.
>>
>>107485534
Its a dumpster fire for new grads. Like really REALLY fucking bad. Even me with my 3 years experience of L3 support im getting the occasional recruiter popping up every couple of months. If you got at least a few years experience you should be fine.
>>
>>107485534
>Is the job market really that bad?
if you dont already have a foot in the door, then yes
>maybe 9 year experience somehow helps me.
you should be fine, but if you have personal projects not currently in your resume, you should add them
t. got hired from a combination of experience (less than 9 years) but the personal projects were a massive boost
>>
>>107479377
I wish my company would do things like this.
>>
>>107485483
Half of the giga doom posts are from jeets. The other is indeed entry level grads who don't know how corpo works and haven't got references and connections to get in somewhere. Fresh grad hires are often nepo hires.

if you're still around just copy the general style of public api docs with something like openapi generators or whatever. templates themselves don't matter all that much

We're all just cogs in a machine. If one cog is spinning too fast, it'll cause friction within the system.
