I finally understand linuxThere's two groups of people1. The normies, they use nvidia, they use whatever windows is the latest version. To get THESE type of people to switch linux has to be mainstream installable by a reputable company. They need GUI's, they need an app store like discover. So until steamOS comes in with flatpaks enabled and they can just install discord with a single click, with a desktop OS with nvidia support and KDE for their 2 monitors and RGB keyboards they wont switch.2. The powerusers, Someone like me, who uses AMD first, who knows how to build computers, who knows how to install linux and the general functionality of linux. I dont have a problem with using a tiling window manager, configuring it because I know its just better and more efficient. I dont need a GUI store or an updater, thats all done through my nix config and a terminal with one command if I need to update. So if you are a poweruser (which you most likely are if you use /g/) then embrace the customization, because no choice is wrong. The only good choice is the choice that works for you and is tailored to your preferences. Because no desktop environment is ever going to meet your needs 100%. If you need 3-4 machines running the same software and setup with no config consider nixos.Thank you for coming to my blog post.
>a fat peng lolimagine choose a bird that unable to fly since too fat as your logodidn't read btw
>>107465663>To get THESE type of people to switch linux has to be mainstream installable by a reputable company. They need pre-builts available in stores, where they can walk into a store and see Linux PCs on display that they can buy a copy of and walk out of the store with a Linux distro already pre-installed and start using from the first press of the power button.
>>107465735Well valve was going to do that but at over $500-600 yea thats a big ask. They havent even released a steamOS official version yet.
When companies and individuals become ready to profit off Linux as a consumer grade OS, they'll do the needful. You don't see blogs about which Mac OS or which Windows OS to pick from. Normies (the majority of the world btw) hate choices.Just> make a central Linux> central app store> do central cloud stuff for Linux music, passwords, etc> ...and all that shitOtherwise the retarded penguin will only be used by nerds with inflated sense of their intelligence.
>>107465949>make a central Linuxthey literally can'tthe only thing that made linux exist that the kernelif it wasn't tedious to make one, they'd have a different kernels in every distro
I think you're right about most normies, but I don't fit neatly into those 2 categories.I use Ubuntu, an Nvidia card, AMD cpu. I still use Gnome because configuring i3 was annoying, but at the same time I program in C++ and know x86 and x64 assembly. I also bought a bambu 3d printer because it's reliable.I think I just want to program and build stuff, but I never enjoyed messing with the tools themselves too much. When it takes longer to get a perfect VIM config than to actually write code with VIM, that's annoying (I know you can also use vim out of the box but just as an example)
You use a tiling window manager instead of a desktop? You must really know what you're doing. Dont forget to learn how to program some day champ
>>107465663>>107465735idk why brands don't consider making their own distro configured specifically for their hardware with their branding. It seems like such an obvious choice. It would save money, increase brand recognition and provide better support.
>>107465679The penguin is really a great metaphor for linux when you think about itIt's a bird but it literally can't fly, it can walk but when it does that it's wobbly and fucking retarded. So to move places fast theres a workaround - you can slide on your belly really fast on ice, woohoo! And get this - you're great underwater!Meanwhile actual birds just fly and when they need to walk they are well balanced to do that gracefully and NEVER go underwater because its fucking retarded for a bird to do that.
your (sic) a normalfag that knows just enough to pretend hes not a normalfag
On this moment I am euphoric
>>107465663I'm a "poweruser" and use nvidia so this is wrong already
>>107466425Same here, been using debian as only OS for over 20y. And I use nvidia.Op understands jack shit.
>embrace the customization, because no choice is wrong. The only good choice is the choice that works for you and is tailored to your preferences. Because no desktop environment is ever going to meet your needs 100%.Or, you could take the Linus approach and just stick to whatever the default is as long as it gets the job done.
>>107465663Meh, I consider myself a power user, have amd cpu and nvidia gpu and I use fedora kde on my desktop. Was already using proxmox/debian/alpine on my home servers. Coming from windows the kde gui feels intuitive and nice. But I also appreciate having an advanced terminal and being able to do most things both through a gui as well as terminal. Especially in the beginning when discovering the OS being able to visually navigate around is useful.Might switch to a tiling wm one day cause it does look pretty comfy, though the hotkey tiling in kde is working just fine for me so far.
>>107465663there's actually a 3rd type you forgot about, someone like me, who has sex.
>>107465663I would probably be considered a power user, but not on every machine I operate, some of them I operate like a normie because on those machines my use case is aligned with the normie ethos and I just want the machine to do what I intend to do without much tinkering or time spent doing tasks other than the main intention. On other machines my usecases require that I do a lot of tinkering in order to achieve the results I want, and so I go full power user. I use multiple linux distributions, multiple windows systems, a macOS system, a BSD system. You can probably guess which ones I want to operate like a normie and which I want power user levels of tinkering on.I think to understand linux you have to understand that it represents freedom, freedom means choices, and too many choices isn’t great for a lot of people, they need less choices, they need A or B basically. And those letters have been claimed by Apple and Windows, Rich or Poor, Bay Area Jeets or Delhi India Jeets, No-vidya or Yes Vidya. Those are the choices to the normie. Linux was always there but it was never chosen because it represents too many different things, the average normie could use Fedora or Ubuntu easily, and they’d have no problem except that it wouldn’t be Apple or Windows and that would make them feel negative. Most people that use computers don’t use them because they like computers. And thus they wouldn’t find much enjoyment in learning how to be 1337, they just want the machine to do what it has to do to facilitate x y or z which is TikTok iMessage fictive in that order.
>>107465663>The powerusers, Someone like me, who uses AMD first, who knows how to build computers, who knows how to install linux and the general functionality of linux.LOLOL shut the fuck up. You are nothing.
>>107466584i would say main appeal of tiling wm is keyboard only setups. which is rewarding imo. awesomeWM for example. you can still use the mouse too but it's not geared for that. it's a both hands on the keyboard type situation, like on thinkpads for example, and when you do use the mouse its the trackball or trackpad, so you use special menus that come up when you right click the desktop like picrel.
>>107465663It's fucking hilarious that Linux users see themselves as powerusers, when majority of Linux desktop users are actually just browser babies and script kiddies. Like that survey that revealed less than 1% of Linux users actually rice their system, but the way they wank themselves over it, you'd think it everyone was doing it.
i am a 220v power user
>>107465663You have autism, you are mentally ill. Normal people use whatever is most convenient and fast to do their tasks, they want everything to work without having to troubleshoot it because normal people don't like to waste their time to have the most simple things work when they need to.
>>107466020he's a winner for sure
>>107467358>you have autism and you're mentally ill because you don't like the direction Windows is goingI guess everybody is increasingly becoming mentally ill or are you just going to try and gaslight people into thinking that nobody has a problem with modern Windows?
>>107466888It's funny to me that when you think "power user" you think "somebody who rices their system". That's kiddie shit
>>107466085such a cool metaphor :3
>pacman -Syui'm a poweruser
>>107465663im a normie by your standards and i use amd and think mint was fine i guess but i liked being able to use whatever app i wanted on windows. i support more people switching to linux though if they dont need anything specific, macos is also missing a bunch of shit and its worse than linux for gaming at this point. after almost a year of using it id say its able to hold its own as an OS alongside windows and macos. i didnt try any other distros tho
>>107466085> 2000 rupees from MicroSarr have been deposited into your account.
>>107465663Wrong, wrong, wrong. All "normies" - as you call them - which includes all relatively well-adjusted people - care about is time.Linux - due to being buggy unreliable mess - is a time sink. Normal people have no time to deal with desktop Linux bullshit.Normies are not stupid as you think - in fact they're much smarter than you people here are - as they know what having the right priorities in life is - which is the most important quality of a person.
>>107468841I have no problem with modern Windows.I set up my pc 5 years ago to do what I need, and it serves me since without needing any further tweaks or fixes.
>>107466924TOP KEK and BASEDI use 240V BTW>>107465663>tiling window manager>configuring it >its just better and more efficientKYS unixporn NIG/G/ER .. you know nothing about Linux but endless changing of your dotfiles and configs.Tranny tilling useless as fucken nixOS and omarchi or whatsover.People who WORKING and MAKING MONEY on Linux daily don't need your dwm, suckless shit and so on. We don't spend lifetime to make linux run on potatoPC or 20yo stinkpad. We prefer Zero Configuration Philosophy. If you need to change something you have Ansible. You know building Linux From Scratch is not a rocket science and yes I can do it too like 20year ago.Waste of time which you can spend to make a money.Nothing wrong with Fedora+KDE+AMD+NVIDIA. It's just works. And I don't need to debug fucken SAARch why asus-wmi driver is fucked during startup and my laptop keyboard lighting doesn't work.Grow up.
>>107469148>Nothing wrong with Fedora+KDE+AMD+NVIDIA. It's just works.
A big issue is how many people praising Linux are doing so in the most disgusting lying manner. They'll talk about how "Linux is so great if you never touch the slightest thing, look my grandma who uses the computer 10 minutes per day to go on facebook didn't even notice the switch!" when that pc could just be a phone and is the very antithesis of every other argument about linux being le freedom. They'll always compare basic linux to a basic windows, ignoring that to actually use linux more than a phonefag, you'll have to spend a very long time learning it and breaking your OS multiple times, meanwhile Windows can be debloated entirely in 30 minutes. If you can use linux, there is no way you cannot debloat windows.I've tried Linux Mint, it broke entirely 3 times in 2 days, and 2 of those things that utterly raped the OS were changing the screen's brightness, and auto-mounting my drives. I tried it, in my experience it was a genuine piece of shit software, and I'm easily at the very top of computer knowledge for people who don't have it as a job requirement.I also don't see much of that "freedom", I can do whatever I want on windows, sure I have to download some programs online because it doesn't let me change everything out of the box, but those programs always work, there is never any risk involved, I've never broken my machine a single time in years and years of intense use, and I always find what I'm looking for. I don't have a second pc, meaning anytime linux breaks, I'm shit out of luck to look for help since every single issue I had had linux just not boot. I have a ton of files so I can't distro-hop with junk laptops I don't care about to fix stupid issues. So far the only correct arguments I've seen to use linux are: I'm a diagnosed autist, my pc is 25 years old and will melt if I install windows XP, my job requires me to code some weird shit or setup servers.
>>107465735I agree. I think the pre-builts will have to come with substitutes for a lot of common software on them too, to prevent people who just don't care that much from getting frustrated looking.Honestly, something like Bazzite with Libre office installed would probably do it, except that people might be weirded out by creating and loading new images.
>>107469978>Bazzite with Libre office installed would probably do itNot, they won't cause they're shit. And if you say they are not then you are lying.I seriously don't know what is it with Linux users and their rampant lying - there isn't anything to gain, you tards.
>>107465663You're a power bottom not a power user, don't get confused
>>107465663This is like autism and retardation into one single mind
>>107465663I'm neither group>advanced user>integrated intel gpu>I could use a tiling wm but I prefer a hybrid like kwin_x11 that can do all (with lxqt)>update with apt directlydevuan btw
>>107470941What a sad computing experience.
>>107465663for the first point, you're wrong : its just gayming and by that i mean kernel level anti-cheat, nothing more
>>107465663>and they can just install discord with a single clickYou do realize you can install software with a single click in a gui store for like the past 20 years do you? Didn't read the rest of your post as you obviously never used Linux in your life so your opinion on it is irrelevant
>>107465663>linux just needs shit that has been available on linux for yearsretard, the reason normies use windows is because that is what their computer came with and it's what familiar to them not because any of the reasons you listed
>>107466074>Why not use Linux to make another XP OEM era where every laptop comes with several gigs of bloatware and some eyesore of a theme for good measureYou don't want OEM customization. Look at android where every other brand is in some way or another worse than AOSP.
>>107466002Debian can run with mach/HURD, L4 or the FreeBSD kernel, so some distros actually are kernel agnostic
>Use nvidia on linux>wayland issues, hdr half working, lower performance, display issues, all sorts of unstable horseshit but some video editors and affinity just werk>switch to amd>half the issues gone but now every productivity tool is a fucking messI'm kinda mad

>>107469104Yeah they instead spend hours every week mowing their lawns and similar bullshit that makes no sense but they do it because everyone else around them does
>gentoo>default kde>default vimLet me guess. You need more?
>>107465663>I finally understand linuxNo you don't. Most people on Linux use desktop environments on non-atomic distros and they're happy. Basic terminal commands are not that hard to learn and you don't have to be a power user to use them.Gamers that use pre-configured atomic distros and nerds that customize the hell out of their computers and squabble over everything are both vocal minorities.
>>107465663What if you know what you're doing, but also want to use CUDA packages instead of suffering with AMD's garbage compute "support"?
>>107465663We DON'T want normies coming to Linux. If it becomes mainstream, it means mega-corps will start smell profit, which means Linux will be dumbed down to the low common NPC...Windows users should STAY with Windows, it works for them, they belong there, they should stay there.
>>107466125
AMD is for gaymershit on linux. Nvidia is for productivity on linux.I learned my lesson the hard way, there's no winning either way.
Steam deck linux os running in amd cpu etc
