Explain why the fuck is anki raping my HDD at startup? It's just a program that displays one html at a timeAudio/video are delegated to mpv (and even then, my deck doesn't have anything but plain text)It makes zero sense that it needs to read my drive at 4MB/s for 10s before starting. Is it spying on me?
>>107476087>Windows user worrying about spying
>>107476118Not particularly worried about it, just trying to make sense of how a program with such a simple premise became such a wasteful mess. Was it the Rust? or was it the Python that fucked it up so hard?
>>107476118>Linux user confusing irrelevancy for security
>>107476087>Is it spying on me?Are you an actual retard or just playing one? It has been well established that they are harvesting your data and everyone elses. Get a fucking clue man.
>>107476087HDDs are bread to be raped
>>107476087Anki is bloatware that includes like 60MB of Qt DLLs and >100MB of Chromium DLLs for doing basically nothing except displaying a few bits of text. This software shouldn't even exist and its developers should be rounded up and sent back to the designated shitting street.
is this a bait thread? 4mb/sec for only ten seconds is fucking nothing.
>>107477732>4mb/sec for only ten seconds is fucking nothing.relative to what?
>>107476087WEEBS BTFO!
>>107477885Your base io is about 5% of that on Windows. If it's up for hours on end, it's gonna add up to something two to three magnitudes over 40mb especially since there's gonna be usage spikes, so three is a more conservative estimate imo.
>>107476087Anki has a Rust backend these days, so its binaries are probs pretty fat.
>>107476118game?
>>107476087Anki sucked once they updated to all the material design shit along with FSRS mucking in 2022. All the new zoomers added so much fucking bloat, and broke tons of old addons. I use the old 1.x.x Anki. You can port newer schedulers, but customizing SM-2 for yourself is more than fine. Just don't use ease factor (only 2 conditions), and tweak your reviews according to your stats until you dial in your retention percentage.
>>107479952I like all the new shit. FSRS saved me about 10 minutes per day since I started using it. It is 10x heavier than it should be but all that means in practice is that it hogs about 1gb of ram when I have my decks with like 18k cards open.
i dont have this problem because i simply use mochi.cards
>>107480002FSRS doesnt save you anything aside from the time it takes you to adjust your retention target. But once you know how your brain works, you can get the same review load in SM-2. Cant stand how bloaty and gay the new Anki is. Made for toddlers. The old design from circa 2006 is excellent and snappy.
>>107476087install linuxinstall Oboeteproblem solved.
>>107477669I think the issue is Damien got old. He then brought on a literal fat troon furry with purple hair who lives in france working at google to help him. the troon is smart, but the working at google with infinite compute poisons the mind. then they brought on some younger zoomer devs I think.Unfortunately, the only people who care about performance are millennials who didnt troon out, and older guys who are retired or were forced into hating technology because every tech community has been troonified and politicized.
>>107476087Anki is bloatware for what it is supposed to do. French main dev.
>>107476087That's rust safety at work.
>>107476087>HDD>startupBro you need a whole new PC.
>>107476087> don't know how to lookup file handles > omg why this process is raping my hdd chanhere's a joke.this board is called "technology"
>>107476087HDDs are ass for windows 10
>>107480143Yup , see >>107480131
>>107476153>Was it rust or python?>Silently ignores the jewscriptIt's javascript, it's always javascript.
>>107476153the OG version I use is a python2 processor. python3 isnt that much slower, so I'm assuming the rust library slowed it up because rust sucks.>>107481009Anki has always supported js scripting and it was fine until the 2.x.x rewrite. there was a bug in the js loader that was doing extra repaints on the cards on mobile back around 2014, but ankidroid and anki were both so fast back then that it only mattered on potato devices.
>>107481060>so I'm assuming the rust library slowed it up because rust sucks.rust's speed at runtime is comparable to C++. stop spewing bullshit
>>107481234for equivalent emitted paths, you fucking moron.rustbucketeers instead link zillions of modules and write bloated as fuck code during rewrites because they are weirdo zealot troons or children.you dont snap your fingers and immediately convert shit to rust. ffs even basic unix command ports still dont work properly in rust.your brains are rusted.
