It's a garbage format based on video compression technology two generations (soon to be three) out of date, and somehow has more limitations than JPG and PNG.
If we're going to get a new image format it should be JPEG XL.

>>

>The image quality is leagues above JPG
No, it really isn't, especially because the format enforces 4:2:0 chroma subsampling in lossy mode, which means that unlike JPG, you can't have a perceptually lossless lossy image. webp's compression savings also aren't that much of an improvement over well optimized JPG files either.
>>

>No, it really isn't, especially because the format enforces 4:2:0 chroma subsampling in lossy mode, which means that unlike JPG, you can't have a perceptually lossless lossy image
I don't know what that means. The webp's I download don't have any JPG graininess and transparency also works.
>imageboard wouldn't really benefit from files that can't be edited with gimp
Dude, are you using Gimp 2.6? Gimp has supported webp for a decade.

>Dude, are you using Gimp 2.6? Gimp has supported webp for a decade.
I used gimp as a generic example for software that can shit its pants when working with webp (never used gimp, krita and kolourpaint won)
from my experience WEBPs break shit 60-80% of the time
also others pointed out itt that JXL is objectively better

WEBP WHEN?
>>
>>107482493
>I don't know what that means
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chroma_subsampling
The tl;dr is that chroma subsampling reduces color information in a visual format to save on filesize. JPG has it as an option, but you're not forced to use it. With lossy webp, you're forced to use 4:2:0 chroma subsampling, which means that you're forced to lose a substantial amount of color information no matter what. The difference is noticable, especially with reds and gradients.

do you even know what we're talking about? Is JPEG XL going to instantly transform every single webp on the entire internet into JPEG XL? No? Then what you said is completely irrelevant. All that matters is that I'm tired of searching for an image to post, finding it, and then it being webp.

It's supported in every software that matters currently except browsers, and with Chromium finally changing their minds on JPEG XL and web dev interest in JPEG XL being at an all time high, it's only a matter of time before browsers support it too.

>if reddit can make webp work why can't we? Are we really saying that redditors are smarter than us?
reddit isn't about engagement through meme folders, image edits and other "arcane arts" of old Internet
it's about updoots and algorithms. Serving shitty memes that redditors updoot using WebP is fine because redditors aren't supposed to work with them in any way

You people have your priorities all wrong, allowing audio webm is far more important than enabling some new image format.

>do you even know what we're talking about?
More than you do.
>Is JPEG XL going to instantly transform every single webp on the entire internet into JPEG XL?
If JPEG XL becomes a thing in browsers, a huge load of websites are going to convert all their JPGs and PNGs to it overnight because of JXL's ability to losslessly compress both. Some might keep webp still, but they'll likely convert the webps to JXL too.

not him, but i find somewhat annoying that the image data is only finalized once you submit it.
so for example, if i open a quick reply, paste an image, write the post, and then copy something else, like text, the upload fails, despite the fact that the preview doesn't change.

i wonder if it posts the wrong image if i copy a different image after, let me test

It's soulless. Autists might look for other reasons, but there are downsides to every image format and it doesn't make sense to block them over some spergy nitpicking. Webp is antithetical to 4chan's vibe, and that is the real reason it's not allowed.
