You get a 486DX for Christmas, what do you do with it?

I already have one. It's sitting in my closet doing nothing but waiting for the day that all modern hardware has been killed through the management interface.

You could run Quake if you got a 3d accelerator card and played on Windows.

The original Doom engine is capped at 35 FPS
Modern sourceports made to be faithful to the original like Chocolate Doom are also capped at 35 FPS

That's a 486 Overdrive, a really fast DX4, or something made by a third party vendor like AMD or Cyrix. The standard DX topped out at 50Mhz.

A DX4 is still a 486, and I think they made ones that were meant for OEMs and not Overdrive upgrade processors. Same deal as with the more common DX2 66.
>>
>>107483250
I have one I'm trying to get working again. The hard disk was obviously bad (tick tick tick tick error reading boot sector) so I swapped that out. Right now I have a mix of hard disk controller failure, error seeking floppy drive, locking up for a minute and then deleting or corrupting CMOS settings, and occasionally trying to boot. I suspect I need to replace electrolytic capacitors on the motherboard, since that's often the issue with old electronics that act flaky and sporadic.

might be capacitors. might not be. at worse the electrolytics may have eaten a trace on the board. at minimium could be solder joints gone bad.
you should get yourself one of these "ISA PC Analyzer" cards to see what other faults are lurking:

By the time the 486DX came out, you really should have found replacements for the ancient 8086 games.
>>
>>107493366
>replacements of the same games
lol. without a turbo switch playing some of these older titles at the right speed was impossible without hacks. many of these old 8086 games were never fixed or "replaced". have you considered not snorting fentanyl?
>>
>>107493647
Any game that relied on the native speed of the 8088 was complete trash. When the 486DX came out, SVGA was standard. Only very primitive games using ANSI character graphics came from the era where game loops didn't have timing integrated.
>>
>>107483317
literally where nes emulation started
>>
>>107492806
Wait what, these things are cheap? Ordered. Thanks.
I don't see anything that looks like signs of capacitor leaking except some gunk around caps near the power input of the dual floppy drive itself. The 5.25" drive either works fine or says seek error and doesn't even spun. I think the 3.5" is just badly misaligned - it either says seek error and doesn't spin, or honks, spins, and says error reading. A known good 3.5" drive and cable either says seek error and doesn't spin, or works, so I think that's a board problem.

I'm considering replacing all caps just on general principle because they're old and others with the same board have had issues with them.
>>
>>107493993
>Any game that relied on the native speed of the 8088 was complete trash.
you might think so but for the people that liked that software and wanted to run older titles from early days required the turbo button or fixes.

>>107496348
That's fine too. I recall my DX 33 being pretty good at 2D DOS and Windows games. It was good for emulation of sufficiently old console games too, but struggled with Gameboy even with the optimized No$GMB for DOS. I'm currently in the process of upgrading it to a DX2 66 since you can get those for so cheap these days, but I'm having to troubleshoot some issues it's developed in storage first. It's also maxed out to 64 MB RAM. I don't think it needs that much, but I also don't see any reason not to since I had four 16 MB SIMMs in my box of random RAM sticks.
>>
>>107483317
