You get a 486DX for Christmas, what do you do with it?
>>107483250I already have one. It's sitting in my closet doing nothing but waiting for the day that all modern hardware has been killed through the management interface.
play doom at a blistering 15fps at 320x200
it's gaming time
>>107483250>turn on>type nigger faggot>turn offno but seriously... run some nes roms
>>107483250Sell it to retroomers.
>>107483250Drop it off a bridge onto the traffic below.
>>107483307>running nes emulation>on a 486
Fire up w3.1 and spend my evening listening to my favorite radio show while painting silly stuff in Paint
>>107483317hey zoomer. 486 absolutely ran Nesticle.
>>107483250my first computer was an atarii would find stuff to do with itprolly write a game
>fell for the pentium meme and trashed my 286, 386, 486lifes been shit since
>>107483250Install Tyrian and play it at 10fps
>>107483250Game development. I've been meaning to get one since I want my game to run on 486 systems.
>>107483250>what do you do with it?upgrade to pentium, that shit won't run quake.
>>107483511>upgrade to pentiumOverdrive or are you getting a new motherboard?> that shit won't run quake You could run Quake if you got a 3d accelerator card and played on Windows.

>>107483250A hobby programming project. It's just for fun, it won't be big or professional like GNU.
>>107483641>amd 486 at fucking 160MHzthat's almost cheating.
>>107483250install dos 6.22 and quickbasic so i can run gorillas
>>107483292actually no,a 100mhz 486 could play doom at 40+fpsit was quake that would crawl at 10fps.
>>107483250Why would I have to imagine I lived through it, thought it was a family computer not my personal computer.I played Dangerous Dave and Titus the fox.
>>107483250install gentoohttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4qSziR6sD8Q

>>107483250>You get a 486DX for Christmas, what do you do with it?Run Doom on it. At least that's what I did.
>>107483714>Titus the FoxMy nigga
>>107484144That game really wasn't very good though. I also played Super Bubsy and the first Rayman, looking back it could be seen as a form of psychological torture for an 8 year old kid.
>>107483250Wing CommanderTotal Kilrathi death
>>107483659It was Pentium performance at half the price, and you didn't even need a new motherboard. Perfectly valid upgrade path for people who wanted to play Quake on launch.
>>107483710>40+fpsThe original Doom engine is capped at 35 FPSModern sourceports made to be faithful to the original like Chocolate Doom are also capped at 35 FPS
>>107483710That's a 486 Overdrive, a really fast DX4, or something made by a third party vendor like AMD or Cyrix. The standard DX topped out at 50Mhz.
Rise of the triad
>>107484382He could be talking about the built in performance benchmark, which has the framerate uncapped for performance testing purposes.
>>107484389are you literally retarded?if you are not 100% sure about something don't say anything.>https://www.hardware-collection.net/en/cpu/Intel-486-3.html
>>107484690Anon, those are DX4s.
>>107484731still an IntelĀ® 486DX
>>107484763But they aren't DX4s. Op specified 486DX.
>>107484763literally says 486DX4 you don't even need BASIC knowledge of computers to see an extra letter in the designation
>>107484794Meant to say they aren't DXs. Calling a DX and a DX4 the same thing is like calling an i3 and an i9 the same thing because they're both in the core series.

>>107485048I don't think Half Life would be pleasant on a 486.
>>107485121That's the joke
>>107483250Play this gif on it.
>>107485208why though
>>107485223There's an equally old gif where it's played on an old PC and the monitor explodes as she throws the ball

Whack it to low-bit porn.
>>107484194Or earlier with Sky Shark.
>>107484382Get GZDoom.
>>107486884GZDoom can't run on most Core 2 systems. Its not running on 486 systems.
>>107483250overweight e-wasteI don't even own a cellphone, I have zero need for itwhy would I want thisI'd throw it into recycling
>>107483292a 386 could play doom at 35 fps
>>107484731A DX4 is still a 486, and I think they made ones that were meant for OEMs and not Overdrive upgrade processors. Same deal as with the more common DX2 66.
>>107483250I have one I'm trying to get working again. The hard disk was obviously bad (tick tick tick tick error reading boot sector) so I swapped that out. Right now I have a mix of hard disk controller failure, error seeking floppy drive, locking up for a minute and then deleting or corrupting CMOS settings, and occasionally trying to boot. I suspect I need to replace electrolytic capacitors on the motherboard, since that's often the issue with old electronics that act flaky and sporadic.

>>1074832501. Christmas is pagan, so I don't celebrate or acknowledge it.2. I would kindly refuse the gift because of #1.3. If it was delivered so that I couldn't refuse, I would throw it in the trash.
>>107484194It's a good game but hard as fuck
Install win 3.11, doublespace and fire up doom
>>107483250copy fasttracker 2 to the hard disk and make music>>107483305and most certainly this
>>107488237might be capacitors. might not be. at worse the electrolytics may have eaten a trace on the board. at minimium could be solder joints gone bad. you should get yourself one of these "ISA PC Analyzer" cards to see what other faults are lurking:

>>107483250No turbo button
Make way, inferior 486 coming through.
>>107483250throw it in the trash and buy a useful machine
>>107493242By the time the 486DX came out, you really should have found replacements for the ancient 8086 games.
>>107493366>replacements of the same gameslol. without a turbo switch playing some of these older titles at the right speed was impossible without hacks. many of these old 8086 games were never fixed or "replaced". have you considered not snorting fentanyl?
>>107493647Any game that relied on the native speed of the 8088 was complete trash. When the 486DX came out, SVGA was standard. Only very primitive games using ANSI character graphics came from the era where game loops didn't have timing integrated.
>>107483317literally where nes emulation started
>>107492806Wait what, these things are cheap? Ordered. Thanks.I don't see anything that looks like signs of capacitor leaking except some gunk around caps near the power input of the dual floppy drive itself. The 5.25" drive either works fine or says seek error and doesn't even spun. I think the 3.5" is just badly misaligned - it either says seek error and doesn't spin, or honks, spins, and says error reading. A known good 3.5" drive and cable either says seek error and doesn't spin, or works, so I think that's a board problem. I'm considering replacing all caps just on general principle because they're old and others with the same board have had issues with them.
>>107493993>Any game that relied on the native speed of the 8088 was complete trash. you might think so but for the people that liked that software and wanted to run older titles from early days required the turbo button or fixes. >replaced>with nothinglol>>107494162>Wait what, these things are cheap? Ordered. Thanks.yeah, very reasonable. no problem.>so I think that's a board problem.yeah seems like it to me too>I'm considering replacing all caps i would
>>107483317>the original iPod nano is twice as fast as this computerExplains this
>>107488166Op specified 486DX
>>107496081but can it run doom?
>>107496348That's fine too. I recall my DX 33 being pretty good at 2D DOS and Windows games. It was good for emulation of sufficiently old console games too, but struggled with Gameboy even with the optimized No$GMB for DOS. I'm currently in the process of upgrading it to a DX2 66 since you can get those for so cheap these days, but I'm having to troubleshoot some issues it's developed in storage first. It's also maxed out to 64 MB RAM. I don't think it needs that much, but I also don't see any reason not to since I had four 16 MB SIMMs in my box of random RAM sticks.
>>107483317Fuck, I had a 386SX 25MHz laptop that ran a DOS-based Game Boy emulator at full speed
