The 4chan code has a ridiculous amount of checks to make sure the files don't have embedded hidden data inside. JPG files have their streams copied out and the files rebuilt, webm and MP4 also get the same treatment, PNGs have all unnecessary chunks stripped out. Files are also checked if they are within a few kilobytes of their binary filesize markers. WebP would create a whole new attack vector for the board.Remember you have people who dedicate their lives to abusing this place (eck, sharty, peridot poster from /co/, etc). So any new format addition would require tons of double checks to be full proof.

This for an obsolete format (h264) with worse compression than what 4chan already supports, and for you have to convert any files you find to strip out audio anyways. Webp is (marginally) better than jpg, and it would let you use all the images downloaded off of other sites with no conversion.
