Is VLC on Ubuntu getting worse? Did they drop support for old codecs, or could it be related to the nVidia driver?I have some old DVD rips from like 2005 that I remember being high quality, but now they're all artifacty.
>>107486983*flips random bits in ur drive*Heh... nothing personnel, kid.
>>107486983>I have some old DVD rips from like 2005 that I remember being high qualityThey weren't. DVD is bt601 480i (if you're lucky) mpeg2 with horrific blocking, ringing, and chroma noise on every frame. HD DVD didn't exist until 2006.

>>107487064DVDs are fine.
>>107487064DVD rips look like that if they were encoded to tiny filesizes for piracy with 2005 video codecsAny properly done modern DVD encode looks perfectly fine with no visible compression artifacts
>>107486983DVD rips always looked like shit, and VLC has never done anything to make it look any better, which is why stuff like CCCP were a thing to try and polish the turds a bit.Average dvd ripped movie was what, 600mb? This comes at the cost of looking like a shitty youtube encode.
>>107487318>Any properly done modern DVD encode looks perfectly fineYeah because they're passed through 30 vapoursynth filters first to IVTC and clean up the noise and whatnot. Granted AviSynth existed in 2005 but was pretty primitive and OP didn't mention using it. Actual DVDs straight off the plastic look like total dog ass.
WOMM but I prefer MPV anyway
