Why use a smartphoneâ„¢? Anything that can be done on Android or iOS can be done (usually better) on a desktop operating system. Just get yourself a small laptop/computer and a camera, and that's it.
Is there any other reason than specific apps? Whatever those are, emulators do exist.
Do any of you actually enjoy partaking in this infantilized botnet?

As a matter of fact, I challenge anyone in this thread to name any mobile app (other than the camera) that has neither a web version nor a desktop equivalent.

My kit:
- Librera (Mostly moved over to an e-reader except for reading&listening the same book which isn't supported on my old reader)
- Pano Scrobbler (Music autism, just wanted to break from google finally)
- Bible Study (Interesting book and an exceptionally pleasant app to boot)
- Fossify Gallery (Does the job)
- Olauncher (Clean, supresses my autism)
- Tasker (Most useful app of all time, it's worth having google services installed just for it)
- Obtainium (Supplanted f-droid for me because it's a one stop shop solution for most distribution sites)
- Shizuku (Second most useful app on this list, integrates extremely well with tasker)
- Netguard (Fourth most useful app on this list)
- Termux (Third most useful app on this list, integrates extremely well with tasker)
- Osmand (Geocaching and bike maps mostly)
- Amarok (Naugthy stuff)
- Binary Eye (Best qr reader, the default one is lackluster at best)
- Etar (Calendar, does the job)
- Breezy Weather (Looks nice and just works)
- Keepass2Android (MUCH MUCH better than keepassdx holy shit)
- Revanced Apps (I am so extremely tired of the youtube enshittification wars)
- Tasks.org (Does the job)
- Anki (I note directly to anki because I'm a freak)
- Desmos (Does the calculator job)
- Thunderbird (Does the mail job)
- Coffee (Wakelock, very useful, very simple. Easy to implement with termux but I prefer having it always on hand and not deal with new android bullshit)
- Spectroid (Useful all-around)
- VLC (Media player)
- Brave (The only option currently)
Banking, Government apps, Messengers etc.

cameras are pretty fucking expensive dude since they are not for common people anymore the common persons camera has been integrated into the phone and it's always there when you need it besides that it's also an emergency torch and has a few sensors so it can help you navigate with maps and track your movements if you're into exercise it can be a compass

I recognize the irony in using open source with iOS but OutRun is the best running/hiking tracker app I've ever used and it's FOSS.
I don't believe it's on Android strangely enough.
>>
>>107497521
As with all UMPCs, the main issue is the battery. When I first got it a couple years ot used to last more or less the whole day, but now it drains in only three to four hours.

Overall I wouldn't really recommend buying this specific one. It's just what I have. If you find one with a better battery and/or better overall specs, go for it.

>>107497525
It's a shame others don't recognize the irony of trying so hard to run open source apps on open source versions of android on propietary hardware. Oh well, can't save those who don't want to be saved...

So how your solution any different?

I tend to agree with your general outlook, btw, I put a hammer thru my phone back when the N95 was just crawling into existence... Managed without the bullshit from those beasts up until the other year when I found out I'm a father.
Suddenly, being instantly contactable was of value.

Also, battery life really the worst of it? Hmm. Makes it more attractive.

Plantnet
It's the only app I have on my phone
I wanted a good quality compact camera so that I could carry it about and get decent enough photos. But no one sold them because of smartphones. It really annoyed me. Then my parents switched their ISP because a new one was in our area that actually had modern internet unlike our old one, but we had to get rid of our landline. So I had to get a phone. I always wanted plantnet and since I couldn't get a camera and I needed a phone, I just got a volla phone. I hardly use it. Just browse the internet with it when taking a shit and take photos of weeds because i'm really interested in that and use it like I used landline
>>
>>107497368
Sharty, please I'm not even american
>>
>>107497869
My solution doesn't have broadband pinging any and all near cell towers, at least. The RAM is upgradable, all parts are repairable, and most importanatly, I have full control of the hardware and software: raw memory access and creating virtual devices. I know, I know the CPUs are still backdoored, but that's as far as I was able to go.

Congratulations on your newly discovered fatherhood, by the way. Best of luck with that.

>>107498483
I feel for you, but I'm also intrigued. What kind of work is it that requires a phone, and not a computer. Usually it's the opposite, isn't it?

>>107501733
Good news, Plantnet does have a web version! (here: https://identify.plantnet.org/). As for the issues of the camera and phone number, I must admit; I still have a landline, which I used to sign up to Whatsapp in Waydroid and Signal-desktop via signal-cli. I don't remember anymore how or when I got the old camera, so I apologise for being of no help here.
>>
>>107502404
Oh nice. I'll just take my laptop and carry it around the fields full of cow tracks and take pictures with it. Thanks
>>
>>107502900
No problem. Personally, I'd recommend using a camera for taking images. To each their own. Or were you perhaps implying that you are too physically weak to carry a ten inch netbook in your pocket? If so, then I both feel sorry for you, and recommend going the gymnasium; do some exercise, get in shape, go outside.
>>
>>107503023
I already said I can't get a camera. They don't make or sell them any more. A compact camera. One that I can put in my pocket and bring anywhere, but still decent enough quality. Otherwise it would put me off bringing a camera everywhere with me if i have to carry it around. Look, your advice just doesn't suit me. That's all. No need to get all pissy about it, ok? Don't get insulted

Tachiyomi/Mihon/Kahon and whatever forks absolutely mog and destroy any pc comic/manga reader currently out. Especially on a tablet. Good luck reading comfily with a desktop or laptop.

what will happen to F-Droid when Android stops supporting sideloading apps in 2026?
>>
>>107504716
You will adb your phone to unlock the bootloader, install Magisk-patched firmware and flash the memory with a custom ROM. Then you will install Obtainium and enable installation from F-droid repositories (among other sources). Finally, you will find a FOSS alternative to everything and let Obtainium handle all the updates (which it can do now that your phone is rooted).
Congratulations, now every time you use your phone in public everyone will think you are Mr. Robot. Just don't use it in front of law enforcement.

>>
>>107509345
In terms of security and privacy, yes, but be honest with yourself. Are you really trying to defend yourself in real life against somebody who's trying to pop your phone with a boot level exploit or by attacking the memory allocator of your phone? Probably not. I'm not defending Apple or saying that pixel phones are bad or anything. I'm just saying things can appear useful when you don't have them and then you get them and it seems like a waste or a disappointment. And I don't want you to be stuck in an entirely new ecosystem just because it looked like the grass was greener on the other side.
