I wish they just bit the bullet and made the entire site paywalled so you either pay a fee and have a good experience or you dont.

That would have some good effects but I hope that doesn't happen, only because of the sheer amount of old content that won't be reuploaded elsewhere.

So far it's just the 3x speed, but you know they're gonna make all of the premium eventually. It's fucking over. I use this to learn music and watch boring talks a bit faster.
I'm gonna have to download this shit and speed it up on my computer

It would probably be good for YouTube and its viewers in the long run if the player didn't support changing the playback speed. People would be less willing to watch extremely low information density slop "deep divcs" and such. Unfortunately everything up to 2x is still free.

when you have youtubers that are so fucking desperate to make shekels on that site, while google plays tricks to minimize payouts for everyone except their golden sheep, they will go out of their way to make a video as tediously long as possible. i've seen many of those "deep dive" cringe videos..want to preserve most of that hour of your time?
>see faggot with youtube video featuring [subject]
>open up wikipedia for [subject]
>read the page in 10-15 mintues, depending on length
done. because that's exactly what these fucks do. reading wikipedia verbatim. they'll add in a few things to make it not look like a wikipedia reading but you'll see it's nearly identical

>>
>>107492654
Youtube has a major network advantage and the servers to serve the video content. You can't just "start a video sharing site" that serves over a billion users.
>>
>>107492744
it's no longer 1995 and there's many hosting services and CDNs that can cope - if you have the money. look at streaming sites like kick that seemingly arrived overnight being paid for by a gambling business. they're doing ok. youtube started off small and was immensly popular before google ever bought it. they didn't have any problem. a new site isn't expected to just magically support a billion indians posting bollywood slop every 2 minutes. fuck i would block entire countries if i ran such a site. it took years for google to get to that position anyway. as money flows into [new alt site] they too can expand to support massive numbers
>>
>>107492894
>there's many hosting services and CDNs that can cope
No shit but they need to make a profit. Google has been subsidizing Youtube for so long which is why it's been able to be relatively free for so long. Smaller companies do not have that luxury.
>kick
Youtube probably deals with more traffic in one hour than Kick deals with in a year. It's the norm for people to pay multiple subscriptions and donations to websites like Twitch and Kick whereas most people on Youtube are freeriders.
>youtube started off small and was immensly popular before google ever bought it.
Like most other startups Youtube ran at a loss with the goal of early rapid growth and eventually selling to a bigger company. The way they ran that business was not sustainable in the long run.

Is it impossible that youtube gets replaced? No of course not, but it's extremely unlikely unless Youtube fucks up in a way that is beyond comprehension.
>>
>>107493015
>Google has been subsidizing Youtube
their bullshit accounting seperates google from youtube. youtube is immensly profitable and google isn't "subsidizing it". it pays for itself. this "subsidize" nonsense is a often repeated lie that has no basis in reality

also they don't need to "fuck up" or whatever else. nobody expecting mass mirgration at once either
>>
>>107491626

>laughs in mpv
I set up aggressive caching in mpv.conf so I can even stream videos at 30x speed. it's pretty useful if I remember something happened but can't find when and the thumbnail hover isn't accurate enough
>>
>>107493053
>youtube is immensly profitable and google isn't "subsidizing it".
I should have said "subsidized" past tense. Why would Youtube be profitable today? Because Youtube has been pushing ads and premium, the very thing that you're claiming will push people off the platform (It still hasn't by the way). Any Youtube competitor will need to run at a massive loss in order to even make a dent into Youtube's market share. As soon as they start monetizing effectively (Subscriptions & Ads) and actually operate as a sustainable business they would destroy their only competitive advantage.

You seem to be under the impression that a video hosting website can just run indefinitely without heavy monetization or subsidization.
>>
>>107493160
>Why would Youtube be profitable today?
>"YouTube generated $36.1 billion revenue in 2024"
i'm sorry, are you stupid? do you think it costs google $36 billion to host things and they're running at a loss?
>You seem to be under the impression that a video hosting website can just run indefinitely without heavy monetization or subsidization.

>>
>>107492431
Maybe it's better that we don't and instead just kick the habit of watching content.
I think I'll be okay with it when creators and viewers decide to withdraw.

>i'm sorry, are you stupid? do you think it costs google $36 billion to host things and they're running at a loss?
Read my post again and then write out a response that doesn't make you look like an illiterate retard. "Why would Youtube be profitable today?" was a rhetorical question that I answered in the very next sentence.
>do you think it costs google $36 billion to host things and they're running at a loss?
No I don't think that but it's not an unreasonable position.
>never said that at all
You never explicitly stated it. If you didn't believe it then there would be literally no reason for you to have disagreed with me at all. That was my entire point.
>>
isn't this exploitative of actual retards?
who would watch at 4x?
there are lots of studies on test outcomes and comprehension for speed up lecture videos and 2x is like the ceiling with 1.75x and lower being the sweetspot

also scaletempo on chrome is utter dogshit which is what retards use anyway

I don't understand your point, they've used casual videos as well in those tests.
What would be the point of speeding up the video that fast? You get nothing out of it, it's like retards banging their head on the walls.

yt-dlp will be dead then because they explicitly will not violate US law. The only reason it works right now is because it's completely legal to download unencrypted video for your own personal use. They've already stated they have no interest in cracking any DRM and tell anyone that brings it up to fuck off.
>>
>>107492352
Or just shift right click on the video to bypass their custom context menu and show the browsers default context menu that has playback speed controls still.
>>
>>107494019
people will just download from the browser then again if they need to decrypt the file they can use a L2 key or w/e they buy for 4$ from Indians that's good for a lifetime unless it's shared to retards.
>>
>>107492431
You need to offer a compelling service first. Just charging people for background playback on Android and custom playback speeds on desktop ain't it.

How is Apple able to build a compelling streaming service with premium shows that people want to watch but YouTube can't emulate that? You need something compelling that makes people feel it's worthwhile to subscribe.
