>Summer 2025
>upgrade PC
>get 4 sticks of RAM instead of 2 for a total of 64GB
>set up PC
>all is fine
>few months later
>someone notices that my PC setup with 4 sticks might be running slow
>do some research
>it is
>buy 2 sticks of RAM totalling 64GB to replace
>install it
>RAM went from 3600MT/s to 6000MT/s

Why the fuck do these motherboards have 4 slots if you shouldn't even use them? Who designed this shit?

retard. maybe learn something before you post. or just troon out and cut your dick off.
>>
>>107496324
Zoomers are so genuinely subhuman that I can't tell anymore if this post is bait or dead serious.
>>
>>107496324
You can use the four slots just fine
It's just neurotic gaymers have decided if they cant use a certain memory speed that the PC basically isn't worth using.
>>
>>107496324
For when you eventually need more ram.
I.e a later upgrade.
>>
>>107496341
But that would slow down my PC

>But that would slow down my PC
It doesn't matter at that point that's the drawback.
>>
>>107496345
You'd never notice it.

>slow down my PC
how many high-IO database clusters run on your PCs?

if you don't know what this question even means, then it wont slow down your PC.
>>
>>107496324
You're supposed to turn on XMP/EXPO memory OC in BIOS to bring the speed back up. Memory controllers are designed to shit bricks and lower memory speed when you put in more than 2 sticks.
>>
>>107496324
we don't have the technology to run DDR5 in 4 slots, it's only 2025
you shouldn't question it okay, we just don't. it's physically impossible

Okay faggot you can stop flexing we get it you can afford ram. Fuck you.
>>
>>107496369
How many does EU5 have?
>>
>>107496324
For users who want to populate all DIMM slots you fool. You always take a hit on clockspeed and latency if you want to drive 4 UDIMMs. It is more obvious with DDR4 and DDR5.
>>
>>107496454
Yes, you can run 4xUDIMMs DDR5 on current platforms but you must take a hit on clockspeed and latency. The question becomes does the your use case need the extra capacity to justify the trade for reduced bandwidth and increased latency?

we do intel could since last year and now AM5 can too https://youtu.be/pA-R1FabTDY
>>
DDR5 can't even run at its proper speed with 4 slots.
>>
>>107496931
This. I've had to deal with two DDR5 4xDIMM systems so far and neither of them were stable with fucking JEDEC speeds unless you cranked the voltage way the fuck up. DDR5 is a complete and total regression.

I have 4 Patriot a viper Steels B-Die on my Mobo = 32GB and I get 3800MHz out of them and the Max is 4400MHz. You're telling me if I dropped to 16GB I'll be able to do the full 4400MHz?
>>
>>107496324
Are my 4 slots running at 3596 considered full speed?
>>
>>107498590
Use HWInfo instead and show us the full window.
>>
>>107496737
I ran 4 sticks on my last DDR4 board just fine you just need literally any board/CPU that isn't fucking dogshit.
>>
>>107496324
It's only most AM5 CPUs that have complete utter fucking joke memory controllers. On my AM4 I could do 3600MHz with 2 sticks and 3200MHz with 4 sticks (all identical memory). I haven't tried yet if I can do 3400 or lower the timing to do 3600 because this is good enough, at 3200MHz I can use lower XMP timings as well.
It makes the iGPU run 10% slower but oh well, hopefully they'll port Strix Point to AM5 soon enough so I can switch.

imagine you needed more ram than 2 slots could offer,

also
its more complicated than that, motherboards have different topologies, and it changes the peak frequencies achievable,

>daisy chain topology
traces connect to the first slot and then connect to the next one per channel
( most common) which behaves as you noticed, 2 slots can achieve higher frequencies than than 4 , can achieve higher frequencies than T topology, while retaining 4 slot capability, but sacrifices performance when using 4 slots

> direct topology
self explanatory
1 channel per slot, 2 slot boards , highest performance

> T topology
traces are connected to each slot with roughly the same distance, this enables higher frequencies with 4 slots populated than daisy chain. a well designed T topology board can usually get pretty close to a daisy chain board with 4 single rank dimms, sometimes better , but depends on the platform( intel amd ect) quality of the motherboard, traces are longer than daisy chain , so usually max frequency is lower.
relatively rare these days. much more common in the ddr3 and ddr2 era.

capability of the memory controller also effects this to some degree.

I'm on 2x SK Hynix sticks and 2x Micron DDR4 sticks and they seem to be running at full 3600 and timings look as advertised, right?

DDR4 is exempt from this problem because their CPUs came with good memory controllers. CPUs using DDR5 have dog shit MCUs.

I bought an expensive new mobo and my PC still doesn't boot with 4 ram sticks. It's literally a scam unless you have a brand new expensive CPU + MOBO and you're willing to get shitty speeds
>>
>>107499845
it does apply to ddr4 above ~3800. so really only applies to intel platforms or zen2/3 apus.
