Was this the worst or best thing to happen in messaging?
>>
>>107500042
you can turn them off
>>
>>107500052
Not in telegram
>>
>>107500042
Worst because read receipts give the illusion of presence to a medium that cannot possibly recapture the benefits of real social contact. That added bit of information is just enough to trick your brain into thinking you've made social contact with someone when you see they've read your message, but in reality you're still just reading text on a screen. Your brain fills in the gaps which disincentivizes you from making actual contact, and you're tricked into spending more time staring at your phone.

net negative.
>removes plausible deniability
>forces synchronous communication in an asynchronous medium
>encourages low-effort, knee-jerk replies
>leaks your active times
disable that shit.

Read receipts are just a sign of society's ever-increasing FOMO neuroticism. I swear nobody actually benefits from this shit. SMS and MMS were literally perfect, plausible deniability for not responding to things and the freedom to read and react to messages whenever you wanted. If something was actually important you'd just make a phone call. Instant messaging was never supposed to be for anything of value.
>>
>check if it's something important
>it's not important enough to respond within a minute
>the other end can see that you saw and chose not to reply immediately
usecase?
>>
>>107500042
the worst, the girl im talking to if i send her message the checkmarks are gray all the time, i watch the phone every few minutes if she seen the message or not... then sometimes the checkmarks are blue but no reply? WTF? so i write her another message, wait another day and then write another three message and she replies with one word. And then all over again.... im glad I finally i found a girl that does not ghost me and replies me

im not even joking
>>

Strong take. Wise man.
>>

>removes plausible deniability
legalese bullshit, 99,99% of messages are about trivial stuff, the important stuff is not sent via whatsapp
>forces synchronous communication in an asynchronous medium
doesn't force shit, no one shoots you in the knee if you don't answer in picoseconds. It just means weak willed individuals feel pressured to answer, fuck them
>encourages low-effort, knee-jerk replies
that's all messaging in a nutshell, checkmarks don't change that
>leaks your active times
again you are not usually dealing with glowniggers on whatsapp

it's a comfy indicator, if you send something to someone and there is a blue checkmark you are done with the task
if not you need to call em and ask if they read your fucking message
>>
>>107500042
Not my problem, I don't have anyone to message.
>>
>>107500320
>>107500460
you have shitty friends and are probably a pedo with your deniability argument

SMS also had delivery and read receipts, so does email. I always had receipts enabled for SMS in Settings on my Nokia.

This is the way?
>>
>>107500042
i hate this and the "typing..." indicator because i tend to re-phrase and re-write my replies a lot. the person on the other end sees me typing something for like a minute only for the resulting message being "haha" or "damn that's crazy"
>>
>>107500042
It causes extra stress when someone reads your message but doesn't respond. It makes you think they're ghosting you and that you've fucked up.
>>
>>107503861
>Typing....
>See them typing....
>Stop typing until they send theirs first....
>>
>>107500093
Then stop using it

>>107500093
maybe stop being brown and use white people communications
>>
OP here, what about time stamps? Do you really care if they replied at 2:31pm on Sunday January 2025? Do we really need to know this? Could you live with having only a consistent stream of messages without the small details?
>>
>>107500093
Nobody but cheap Russian prostitutes with AIDS use telegram.
>>
>>107500226
Fuck your navel gazing, it's not direct social contact, it's remote. What the fuck does it need to capture? It's there to transmit information, you stupid sack of shit. Keep your tard poetry to yourself.

Best thing. I don't need to harass my friends to ask them if they've seen a message, I just get notified that a message has been sent and whether or not they've seen it.
I like it
>>
>>107500226
I disagree, it's valuable info for text comms. For example, I'd love to know how many anons read my posts, but I have to rely on (You)s as a surrogate, which doesn't translate at all. Anons could be reading my posts and not replying because they're so high quality that there's nothing else to add. But I'm left wondering if anyone even saw it at all. It would also be cool if there was some kind of rating feature that could accrue points to a post based on +/- 1 interactions from users. That way a thread could be sorted by the highest rated posts and really up the quality of discourse.
>>
>>107508097
I laughed so hard at your post. Masterful example of irony, sir! It's so funny to imagine someone might read your post and think it's sincere. +1 internet points to you. :^)
>>
>>107500320
>removes plausible deniability
Tip: Reading the notification does not mark the message as read. It's only when you open it. So, reading the notification and swiping it away is "read without sending read receipt".

Telegram is peak white people communications. The US Federal Gov doesn't like Americans using it for a reason.
>>
>>107503267
Your phone could request a delivery confirmation from your carrier but SMS never had read receipts. You need to kill yourself.

It's not useful and only encourages anxious engagement with a screen. Turned that shit off the moment it became available.
>>
>>107500042
>see the text
>responds
What's wrong with that, OP?
>>
There is something reasonable in the idea of not needing to send acknowledgement messages because the read receipt confirms all that needs to be confirmed. But Apple has trained people to use reactions anyway. And that shit comes through as a message over SMS for some retarded reason. '<Person> liked "<your entire text message>."'
