Got a very cheap (by Australian pricing standards) T480 and both batteries are detected but not charging. Troubleshooting is pointing to the Thunderbolt controller needing to be updated and apparently it's a widely known issue I didn't know about. I'm using a temporary install of windows 11 22H2 (no Microsoft account) and using the lenovo utilities and tools, had to downgrade the power management driver to get the thunderbolt update tool to work and after running the update the laptop turned off, I'm hoping it's doing a low power firmware update but no signs of life. Is this expected behaviour and is there a better guide for this apparently very very well known T480 flaw?

Sub brands within the X series. Goes back to the IBM days when T series was the standard line, X was the more mobile variant.

The X1 is an even more mobile variant, the first one releasing back alongside the X220. If the X series was built along the thought process of "how do we make a Thinkpad more portable?" the X1 was "how do we make a portable laptop more functional like a Thinkpad?" There's less of a difference these days as all laptops have generally trended towards smaller and lighter at the expense of ports, but Lenovo still uses the X1 as a marketing friendly flagship line.

X9 is like if Lenovo made a Macbook Air. Two Type-C, one Type-A, an HDMI and a 3.5mm audio jack are all you get for ports. One of those Type-Cs is also for charging. They even removed the nipple. Very irritating for people who think of functionality when they see the Thinkpad branding, but the name sells so Lenovo slaps it on things.

They have already realeased the thinkbook brand that was supposed to target consumers, I don't understand the need for another one. Maybey they are expecting to sell more using their most recognizable brand, but I hope they won't or it'll be the end of the thinkpad line.

Most sites claim the USB-C port on the X380Y can be used to charge it.
Do I need special power brick or it can be charged with regular phone charger?
desu, I'm still not sure what to pick, the X380Y seems the best option for a laptop/tablet.
But something like the HP elite X2 G3/Thinkpad X1 tablet G3 is appealing mostly for the slimmer form factor.

It's possible they're both dead but the probability that both are dead is not as probable as the issue being the outdated EC firmware's well known bug of failing to recognise the batteries are legit amd so refusing to charge them. And I can't update the EC firmware because the official update utility from Lenovo using windows and also trying fwupdmgr in fedora both fail because the update won't process if there's only AC power, it insists on at least 25% batter charge in case the AC disconnects but obviously, can't charge the battery. The smoking gun is I updated the BIOS to v1.56 and now on boot I get a nag warning that the batteries aren't genuine. They are. So, stuck in a catch 22 with old buggy EC firmware. If I buy another Lenovo battery there's no guarantee it will have charge and sold batteries often don't. So I think my options are either to keep it purely as a desktop machine/accept AC only power which is disappointing for a laptop with two batteries, or try to flash the firmware by hand with a CH341A and IC hooks and risk bricking it entirely.

Goys, which one do I buy? t480 (good screen, ram and storage), t14g1 (amd) or t14g2 (incel).
They're all in the same price range (t480 is a lil cheaper), tho the t14's need a ram upgrade.

X390 yoga anon again You'll need a laptop-rated power brick even for USB-C, at least a 65W capacity charger. They make compact ones these days that allow charging multiple devices off of one brick, but I can't say for sure if *your* phone charger will work for you. That said it looks like the HP and the X1 Tablet you mentioned also want a 65W charger.

Honestly you'll probably be happy with any one of them, the only real question is what sort of tradeoffs you want to make. Do you envision using it most often as a tablet and don't mind needing a kickstand whenever you want to use it with a physical keyboard like a laptop? The HP or X1 or any other "2-in-1" will be fine. Would you rather have full computer capability when you do need it and a less comfortable tablet experience? An X380 Yoga or any "laptop convertible" fits that bill better. Obviously I'm biased towards laptop convertibles, since they fit my needs better, but the 2-in-1s you mentioned have higher-res screens (3000 x 2000 is definitely noticeable going from a 1920 x 1080) and you'll never have to worry about the hinges being a problem like you mentioned in a previous post. And if you don't think you'll be transferring files off of external drives often, or don't need built-in HDMI support/are fine with dongles, the port selection on a laptop convertible isn't necessary.

Point. I want to get USB-C device to pack one less charger with me and charge on the go/powerbank, but you're right 65W is mandatory.
My chinese phone power brick supply 100W though, can't tell if the damn thing can supply 20 volts or not.

You're mostly right, I've looked over various sites and didn't find any comparison between the two.
And you also bring up good point about #donglelife argument.
Weight difference isn't much between the two, but the size might be an issue.
I guess I'll get the cheaper option with the better specs regarding storage and ram then.
Since I guess both would offer similar experience, and maybe the X380Y has slight advantage just by having a garaged pen compared to the tablet, and the 16:9 aspect ratio would look better when watching movies.

I have HP 2570p with 4 GB ram, when I was using i3, things were fine~ish, I moved to KDE because I needed the elegant GUI and the experience were painful.
Keep in mind all of this is running -still- on 5400 rpm HDD.
So just putting fast SSD would offer better experience when swapping to SSD compare to HDD.
