Can I tell my P16s running Linux to charge up to 50% and switch to the AC adapter entirely for the foreseeable future?
>>107506719I can do this on my P14s. I’ve got my battery set to stop charging at 85%.
I bought a T460 for my mom as a first pc. I am a user of x201 and it's still working.
>>107507051How? Do you just load thinkpad-acpi and write some random bullshit into /sys?
>>107502998Got a very cheap (by Australian pricing standards) T480 and both batteries are detected but not charging. Troubleshooting is pointing to the Thunderbolt controller needing to be updated and apparently it's a widely known issue I didn't know about. I'm using a temporary install of windows 11 22H2 (no Microsoft account) and using the lenovo utilities and tools, had to downgrade the power management driver to get the thunderbolt update tool to work and after running the update the laptop turned off, I'm hoping it's doing a low power firmware update but no signs of life. Is this expected behaviour and is there a better guide for this apparently very very well known T480 flaw?
>>107502998Are X1/X9 part of the X series or separate?
>>107509276Sub brands within the X series. Goes back to the IBM days when T series was the standard line, X was the more mobile variant. The X1 is an even more mobile variant, the first one releasing back alongside the X220. If the X series was built along the thought process of "how do we make a Thinkpad more portable?" the X1 was "how do we make a portable laptop more functional like a Thinkpad?" There's less of a difference these days as all laptops have generally trended towards smaller and lighter at the expense of ports, but Lenovo still uses the X1 as a marketing friendly flagship line.X9 is like if Lenovo made a Macbook Air. Two Type-C, one Type-A, an HDMI and a 3.5mm audio jack are all you get for ports. One of those Type-Cs is also for charging. They even removed the nipple. Very irritating for people who think of functionality when they see the Thinkpad branding, but the name sells so Lenovo slaps it on things.
>>107507051He says Linux bruvNo ThinkVantage.

>Thinkpad t1g gen 8>Legion 5iI need a laptop with a GPU and everything I've read so far has told me to avoid anything that isn't Lenovo is this true? Both of these have the exact same specs except the legion is around $800 cheaper. Do any of you fags have experience with the Legion series and the quality of them?
>>107508673Maybe your batteries are dead now?
>>107511954If you want the gpu to play games, buy a gaming computer. The Thinkpads with the same GPU will run much slower. For everything else, go with Thinkpad.
>>107506719>>107507360You have that option in the plasma and gnome settings. You can also configure it in the tlp conf file.
>>107509553>X9 is like if Lenovo made a Macbook Air.They have already realeased the thinkbook brand that was supposed to target consumers, I don't understand the need for another one. Maybey they are expecting to sell more using their most recognizable brand, but I hope they won't or it'll be the end of the thinkpad line.

>>107496255>>107496268Again thanks for the feedback.>More importantly the 80 has rubber feet on the keyboard bezel for it to rest on>it's very comfortable to "cradle" it in your inner forearmThese things are the most important bits that no reviewers usually mention. Most sites claim the USB-C port on the X380Y can be used to charge it.Do I need special power brick or it can be charged with regular phone charger?desu, I'm still not sure what to pick, the X380Y seems the best option for a laptop/tablet.But something like the HP elite X2 G3/Thinkpad X1 tablet G3 is appealing mostly for the slimmer form factor.and there's no much difference in the price.
>>107514757The charger has to supply 45 W or more. If not, it only charges when turned off.

>>107502998>bought a refurbished T480 that came with Win11 on it>installed Arch with Xfce>touchscreen just workswhat is this black magic
>>107512665It's possible they're both dead but the probability that both are dead is not as probable as the issue being the outdated EC firmware's well known bug of failing to recognise the batteries are legit amd so refusing to charge them. And I can't update the EC firmware because the official update utility from Lenovo using windows and also trying fwupdmgr in fedora both fail because the update won't process if there's only AC power, it insists on at least 25% batter charge in case the AC disconnects but obviously, can't charge the battery. The smoking gun is I updated the BIOS to v1.56 and now on boot I get a nag warning that the batteries aren't genuine. They are. So, stuck in a catch 22 with old buggy EC firmware. If I buy another Lenovo battery there's no guarantee it will have charge and sold batteries often don't. So I think my options are either to keep it purely as a desktop machine/accept AC only power which is disappointing for a laptop with two batteries, or try to flash the firmware by hand with a CH341A and IC hooks and risk bricking it entirely.
Goys, which one do I buy? t480 (good screen, ram and storage), t14g1 (amd) or t14g2 (incel). They're all in the same price range (t480 is a lil cheaper), tho the t14's need a ram upgrade.
Why exactly should I buy a laptop? Do you think I go outside? Fucking idiots.
>>107519161You're right, I think you should kill yourself.
>>107519175And why is that? What's your reasoning?
>>107514757X390 yoga anon again You'll need a laptop-rated power brick even for USB-C, at least a 65W capacity charger. They make compact ones these days that allow charging multiple devices off of one brick, but I can't say for sure if *your* phone charger will work for you. That said it looks like the HP and the X1 Tablet you mentioned also want a 65W charger.Honestly you'll probably be happy with any one of them, the only real question is what sort of tradeoffs you want to make. Do you envision using it most often as a tablet and don't mind needing a kickstand whenever you want to use it with a physical keyboard like a laptop? The HP or X1 or any other "2-in-1" will be fine. Would you rather have full computer capability when you do need it and a less comfortable tablet experience? An X380 Yoga or any "laptop convertible" fits that bill better. Obviously I'm biased towards laptop convertibles, since they fit my needs better, but the 2-in-1s you mentioned have higher-res screens (3000 x 2000 is definitely noticeable going from a 1920 x 1080) and you'll never have to worry about the hinges being a problem like you mentioned in a previous post. And if you don't think you'll be transferring files off of external drives often, or don't need built-in HDMI support/are fine with dongles, the port selection on a laptop convertible isn't necessary.
>>107502998just pulled the trigger on a thinkpad t14 g1 before the rampocalypse hits laptop prices like a brick wall.
What's a lightweight distro/DE that still looks good and has a modern look, that won't stutter on an X200 with 4gb RAM? Even Xfce Mint is kinda sluggish. Thinking of setting up a box that I can lend out to friends if they want to try Linux.
Anybody close to southern Middle TN looking for a P53 with 16 GB RAM and a Quadro T2000. It has a Intel core 12x i7-9750H CPU. I want to get something slimmer and not so oriented toward CAD work. I got this in college for Solidworks and now I use company computers for that stuff
>>107520864hey!!!!!! a fellow cad guy!!!!!you work with inventor too?
>>107520915I did in college mostly on SolidWorks at my company but I basically have to know it all because they let boomers and managers choose at whim PDM, and ERP software as opposed to engineers. Gonna be getting into FreeCad because I refuse to install windows on my home desktop
>>107520864can you send it to Yurop, perhaps for free, or maybe $20?
>>107502998>Thinking of ordering a ThinkPad >Check through my university site which allows staff to buy stuff from special retailers>Its more expensive than buying it normallyWhats the fucking point?
>>107432958I went to a repair shop, and the problem turned out to be the Lenovo plug-to-USB-C adapter. What are the odds of two new adapters arriving dead?Question: Can I buy a general-use 65W adapter for a T480, or does it have to be a specific laptop adapter? Or should I keep trying to buy Lenovo plug-to-USB-C adapters until I win the AliExpress gacha?
>>107524513I use a 68w motorola one and it's fine, though the cable is barely 1.5m (any recommendations for a longer one?)
>>107519329>They make compact ones these days that allow charging multiple devices off of one brick, but I can't say for sure if *your* phone charger will work for you.Point. I want to get USB-C device to pack one less charger with me and charge on the go/powerbank, but you're right 65W is mandatory. My chinese phone power brick supply 100W though, can't tell if the damn thing can supply 20 volts or not.>Honestly you'll probably be happy with any one of themYou're mostly right, I've looked over various sites and didn't find any comparison between the two.And you also bring up good point about #donglelife argument.Weight difference isn't much between the two, but the size might be an issue.I guess I'll get the cheaper option with the better specs regarding storage and ram then.Since I guess both would offer similar experience, and maybe the X380Y has slight advantage just by having a garaged pen compared to the tablet, and the 16:9 aspect ratio would look better when watching movies.
>>107524497>university site which allows staff to buy stuff Shouldn't this be subsidised? Like if your research really requires a new laptop you go through all the paperwork and university does a full or partial cashback.
>>107526100Oh it could work like this? Hmm I can ask then and try. Guess that's the point. I just thought it has some general discount for employees.Specifically for ThinkPads of course.
>>107521747just a warning. freecad is infuriating to work with. I would ALMOST prefer working with autocad 3d.I wish inventor wasn't so expensive though

I’m going to be going overseas for a month just before new years, how long does eBay take to ship generally?
>been put in charge of figuring out a laptop for a nephew>seems he mostly wants it for minecraft/roblox shit or whatever fuck if I knowconsidering that's basically a zero grade requirement since you can run that shit on a two decade old toaster, but I know there's a difference between "running it" and "running it well enough." at this point the best I can figure is to do something like a gen1 t14s with a ryzen 7 4750u because muh APU and they're floating around $200~ USD. Are there any other obvious options here?I really fucking hate trying to decipher dumbass laptop processor SKU's.
