What's the recommended way to store large amounts of media data? Internal or external HDD? SATA SSD?

HDD seems to last not as long from what people say but they don't need to run all the time, and even the internal HDD in my old PC don't seem to run (their disk whirling noise is really obvious when they do) when not in use. On the other hand SSDs cost more money per TB and is rising.

sponsers are the reason. they give more then just hardware. they pay their salaries. there is some play room in the mice and keyboards they use but not the rest. same goes for the people that run those turnements. they don't own any of the hardware or they get a very good deal. since everyone is going to see it all the time. and you buy that crap lmao.

2 TB is the M.2/SSD sweet spot per drive realistically, so however many you can or want to fit is a good base, but bulk media is better on platter drives. The GB/TB per dollar is just flat better and you will not see any performance difference from the end user really

>Does SMR vs CMR make a huge difference in your experience?
Most drives in any size and of any type youd want to buy are CMR.

https://nascompares.com/answer/list-of-wd-cmr-and-smr-hard-drives-hdd/

I would generally recommend WD Red Pro or WD Gold drives, but price per TB is usually the biggest concern for bulk storage to a point. The Seagate Exos drives were also fine iirc. You are usually looking for 'NAS' drives

I havent looked into drive reliability in a couple years so may want to cross check with Backblaze if they still do their data dumps.

There is also serverpartdeals for refurb and other data center style OEM drives without retail packaging, usually fairly cheap and they have a warranty at least through them (their packaging is also god tier)

My primary drives in the Plex box are two 20 TB WD Red pros with a handful of other drives. I am not running a raid but I have most of my data mirrored on them for paranoia's sake since my library is so large I don't want to rebuild it

>>
>>107529798
>NTA but any other reading for someone who wants to venture into doing their first NAS using an old PC (after building their new PC)?
I'll be honest I haven't delved into setting up anything to automate backups or anything like that cause I'm lazy and work is a pain in my ass, but my server is also an old PC. I tend to keep shit manually backed up with a mapped drive/folder on my network and thats good enough for what I have on my PC (several local copies of anything important and a couple in various offside cloud shit-- Mega and Jewgle Drive)

IIRC Level1Techs has some good information on that on their youtube since they go over a lot of more 'home lab' things like that and self hosting

The principles of drives is generally the same though, you want high reliability drives that can take a lot of writing. Beyond that you can look into flavors of RAIDS if you want proper redundancy and then scale your drive numbers from that if you wish

I am sure another anon knows more about that side than I do

The most annoying thing anymore is finding a fucking case that can house a lot of HDDs since most of them either have 2.5" SSD shit or none due to the popularity of M.2 drives

my new Radeon card keeps crashing on Fedora because of overuse (especially on Helldivers 2 and MHWilds).
Is there a way to prevent this? It's not overheating, i checked the stats. I dont know if it's powerdraw. The 9070 XT has 3 4x2 ports that are all properly slotted ibn. Is a 850W power supply not enough?

is there ever a reason to cope with lower gen ssds considering the heat is becoming more and more the higher you go along with cooling?
3 vs 4 vs 5 and potential copes in not going double sided (no 8tb capacities)

all these are copes to spending less on nvme btw

most old shit is being phased out though so gen4 seems like minimum but

lots of these in the logs:
>REG_WAIT timeout 1us * 150000 tries - optc401_disable_crtc line:230
might help you find out what the issue is
(CRTC is an old term for display output, disable_crtc = disable_display_output, basically)

i haven't seen that line before but there was a problem with freesync that was finally fixed in linux 6.18
(the fixes were in amd-staging-drm-next for like 2 months but they finally got off their asses and merged it for 6.18)
so either try disabling freesync or see if you can update to linux 6.18
that's the only issue i've experienced with the 9070 XT, other than that it's been rock solid

Absolutely yes I am, opening that box was like fucking pandora's box with how badly it was caked in that tar and I live in a former Soviet country so I know how fucking bad it can permanently bind onto surrounding objects. I am sure some of that dust while extremely sticky (so much so even putting it in the bathtub or blasting it with a hose didn't dislodge it, much less scrubbing it with sponges of various types) could still get kicked up just by walking around it or lifting up the components. I can still smell it.

The instruction manual said to not use 2 ports of the same forked cable. So I guess I need 3 separate cables.
PCUE5.1 doesn't seem to fit into a normal VGA 4x2 port. Or I haven't found one that does.
I have to go to the store tomorrow anyway so I can check if there is such a thing as a PCIE5.1 cable that fits.
In the meantime, I am trying to figure this instability out.
Note that the crashes never resulted in the display going black. KT was always just a crash to desktop or a freeze of the game.
And it was in the middle of doing nothing in game, too, not some super intensive stuff that turned the GPU into a tricopter trying to take off.

The GPU manufacturer assumes the worst-case scenario.

It was the GPU manual.
Also, I am looking all over and very threat don't some forum I can find that talks about the 3 PCIE inputs for the 9070xt seem to agree that that "you need 3 PCIE outputs out of the PSU" only applies to low outer units.
Hell, I can't even FIND any PSUs with 3 PCIE outputs. Only 2 PCIE + PCIE5.1

now they need to make a 32" 6k display and a 42" 8k display

you have no sources though
if they already have 5k 180hz scalers why would it be 120hz? unless they are not the same as on oled monitors
if there is some practical limit or just using dsc and 10 bits it will be like 165h-175hz max dp1.4+dsc
but they WILL include DP2.1 on hyperpremium monitors or maybe not if they can't push the hz, but I doubt they won't
then they can go 240hz+ but that will require dp2.1 cables for sure

I upgraded from a shitty pentium to AM4 with a 3060. I had a really good deal on an 850w PSU but that broke during transit. A friend had a spare 1440p monitor that he didn't need so he gave it to me.

You can do fine with a 12400/12600k. For Ryzen I wouldn't go lower than a 7500f. The arc pairs well with a 7600x or 9600x though. I just built a family friend an arc b580 build with a 7600x and 32 gb of 6000/c36 in September and we were able to get between 80-120 fps at 1080p high in all of the games we tested and around 75-80 fps in clair obscur in 1080p medium.

A 5070 on a 550w gold PSU? What made you think you can run a 5060TI 16GB on a 650W PSU? You're going to need at least 750W to run that 5060TI 8GB safely. You risk killing your entire PC if you pair a 5060 with just an 850W PSU. Do the only sane thing and make sure you get a 1000W PSU for your 5050.

I'll probably never get rid of the cases, only downside is they can resonate (easily dampened by adhesive sound foam) and there's no opening to help with removing the CPU cooler while the mobo is mounted
I should probably Dremel one and sand down to see if I can do it myself

I have seen literally no indication that ram situation is getting better soon.

Ram manufacturer #1 quit making consumer stuff
#2 #3 dont plan to increase production
If they did suddenly decide to increase production it'd take years to come online

Theres news of AI datacenters that are currently paused because they cant get hardware, and thats going to create a backlog of ram orders where they are willing to bid more for them than average gamer.
The situation is unprecedented.

Anons, I have an R5 3600. I'm sticking with AM4.
Should I go 5700X or 5500X3D or 5600/X? 5700X and 5500X3D are practically same price here, 5600/X being about 1/4 cheaper.

Im really torn. I like the Corsairs but HX1200i doesn't have a 12VHPWR, I like Seasonic but it seems like a bad batch is going aroound the USA and it keeps nearing $500 if I wait, and FSP seems promising but wiffy on reviews depending on 1000->1200W.

If I'm sitting at 600W (9800X3D+5070Ti), am I going overkill at 1200W or still good for transient? I did my calcs without contributing 1 fan controller + 2x 3.5 HDDs but I doubt that will add more than 60W.
