You know you can replace the RAM on basically any old laptop regardless of brand? There's nothing special about these.
>>107533818It's an old meme, you wouldn't get it.
>>107533818They used to be better built and more repairable than basically anything else. Debuting new tech or making ridiculous shit like pic related.
>>107533818I wish there was a laptop the width of a full keyboard, no touchpad in the way and no wrist burner padding
>>107533818If we talking about some old shit. I would argue pic related in 15" or 17" is a better daily driver.
>>107533883 (me)padding could be put above the keyboard area with speakers, and we could have a comfy laptop with an ultrawide 19" screen
>>107533930nah, fans broke a lot
>>107533818Because IBM. That's about it.Not even because >>107533879, there was plenty of good business notebook competition.
>>107533879>more repairable than basically anything else.Meanwhile they were of the first companies to softlock hardware, requireing BIOS/firmware modding. Plus a lot of proprietary shit in the early days that cost a lot more.
>>107533818i got an old thinkpad (t420) and daily drove it for a few years. i never used one before so i have no bias. its kino that it resembles a desktop pc in some ways. was able to get coreboot installed and a wifi card with open source drivers among other upgrades, notably the screen which is a must if you dont want a miserable experience. all of this was a fun tinkering exercise but ultimately pointless for day to day use.a lot of things seemed to just werk whereas other laptops might be janky or bugged, especially with webcams, microphones, and sleep/hibernate. the keyboard is good (for a laptop) and they don't make them like that anymore, but it isnt amazing like people say. the build is sturdy at its core but the plastic does have a lot of flex and can feel cheap.i was annoyed how heavy it was. i didnt think id care about a few extra pounds but it really makes a difference.obviously the hardware cant keep up with modern proprietary OS but if you run a lightweight unix its a non-issueultimately i switched to a newer (but less powerful) laptop for some modern conveniences like faster ports, better screen/microphone/portability. i have a sort of sunk cost fallacy with the t420 but found it to be inconvenient to use in practice.ive heard the t480 is also a good platform for tinkerers but i wanted to use experience the old IBM-style aesthetic
>>107533818Those old IBM ones and some older Lenovo ones look cool as fuck. That's about it for me. I have a T470, but it doesn't look as kino as those older models.
>>107533930>Tiny ass keyboard made for women's handsThis is why I hate apple products of that era, their physical design was always retarded
>>107533818It's shilling anon.Honestly they're not as great as they used to be, and there's tons of laptops that can do the same exact thing for a way more affordable price.
>>107533818thinkpads have the perfect combination of a good keyboard, the hardware is reliable and doesn't shit the bed on me and they fitc my ideal aesthetic of a laptop.
>>107535115What do you mean? Just a normal laptop keyboard.
They were the dominant business laptop brand for a long time with the best feature set of any of the competition, and since they were the most abundant, they went for the cheapest after recycling auctions dumped them on ebay.At their peak you could get a T420 for like $200 and it would be an objectively better laptop than anything new of a similar caliber because mobile processors kinda stagnated for a while there. A mobile broadwell i5 wasnt that much better than a sandy bridge one in practice.Less of a thing now, modern ryzen apus made even shit tier consumer laptops pretty functionally capable and modern thinkpads dont really differentiate themselves from the other business laptop competition that much. But for a solid while there it was thinkpad or nothin
>>107536528There's a reason so many of the memes center around that generation.
>>107536400>>107533818I fell for the thinkpad meme one time and never again. In 2021 when it was time to replace my work laptop they asked me what I want and like a muppet I got x1 carbon. Huge mistake, this pos runs hot whatever I do, it even runs hot on idle and when it finally runs its fan the sound is terrible and it runs hot again. The most under performing cooling on a business laptop ever. I had only elitebooks before the thinkpad and when it was time to replace the thinkpad I got elitebook again. I have g1a now somehow 12 core runs cooler than quad core x1 even on full load and it is quieter, the laptop is marginally thicker but probably has four times the cooling potential.
>>107537620I don't know why you're surprised. ThinkPads haven't been market leading for over a decade. They fucked up the keyboard layout in what, 2014?
>>107533818chinks
>>107533818They are reliable. That's why. Some Dell laptops are also a really good choice for the conoisseur
>>107533818I like the clit-mouse
>>107533818lurk moreit's much more than the RAM being replaceable.
>>107537747Such as?
>>107537891It's hard to portray in a single image; but it was very easy to take the whole thing apart. The pic is from the W520 Hardware Maintenance Manual that was available for download from the Lenovo site. Not hidden behind some vendor portal so the retards don't get access to it. And realistically, all the things you need to access as an end user (HDD, RAM, Mini PCI) are either a panel on the bottom, or under the keyboard. It also had the Ultrabay expansion slot for everything from a floppy drive, optical drive, HDD caddy, or even an extra battery. At one point I needed to replace the fan on my T60p and didn't want to send my computer in for a couple days to have it serviced (it would have been overnighted both ways in a box that was itself overnighted to you). So they sent me a new fan/heatsink assembly to do it myself. It was easy because they were designed to be serviced quickly as every ThinkPad came with at least a three-year service contract.
