Stars make me sad.
I live in a small town. Born and raised here. There used to be stars everywhere at night because there was no light pollution, Last 15 or so years our comfy town transformed into a mini city with modern and industrial buildings and infrastructure. I get that it's probably for the better, but I haven't seen a star in maybe 10 years now.

Since I was young when I've been taken to rural/suburban areas I've started crying. There's something about them that makes me really hate them, they feel so boring and lonely, and whenever I'm there I get worried that I'm not going to be able to leave, or sad because I know they exist. Even now that I'm an adult I just start crying or panicking when I'm there.

I usually don't like nature in general. I sometimes fantasize on living on a planet wide city like holy terra/croissant/ravnica, or want all life on earth to be replaced with machines. Nature just seems so deadly and alien to me.

Partly, you can see with the river/lake that there's more light reflection off the water with the sodium lamps, and that wouldn't be cut with the shielding.

The difference in eye strain is actually quite noticeable with them.
>>
>>107542907
I remember a study like 15 years ago that showed that replacing yellow streetlights with blue ones reduced violence in nigger hoods.
>>
Most sodium lights are shielded and have some sort of hood to reflect and direct the light towards the street.
And most LED streetlights are just sodium posts retrofitted with LEDs, meaning they use the exact same shielding in most cases.
The reason LEDs have a less narrow beam pattern is not due to shielding, but because of the bulb design. LEDs are much smaller and much brighter than sodium bulbs, meaning much more light from a smaller area. That much brighter light is reflected on the ground and pollutes the sky way worse than sodium lights.
>>
>>107545833
>normalized for rising light output as our towns have been urbanizing more and more
That first google result study does not support your idiotic babyduck claim that "LED pollutes more", light pollution a policy concern not a technology concern

Contrary what this picture tries to tell, light pollution has only gotten exponentially worse.
LEDs are cheaper acquire and nearly free to run, so they're being used really carelessly.
>>
>>107545893
You're really so dumb that you think a light that's 10 times as bright pollutes less?

LEDs and sodium bulbs use the same shielding.
LEDs are several times brighter.
LEDs pollute more.

It's that simple.

if you're too young to have seen a sodium fixture, you can see here that it's properly shielded, and has a mirror to reflect and direct the light towards the ground

Zoomers will never know how nice it was to go out at night when the blubs were a dim warm sodium glow. That yellow light makes humans feel naturally relaxed / chilld because it reminds us of being around the campfire in ancient times.

Ugly white brights like >>107545933 just make people not want to go out at night, which is what THEY want, hence why it's done.

The LED diodes themselves last fucking forever, but the manufacturers will never mention how the electronics required to drive them will randomly die after a couple heat cycles :^)
This has been noticed, the promised maintenance savings have not materialized. But now it's too late, the older more reliable technology has been outlawed.

Sodium arc lamps are actually pretty efficient and durable as a light sources go but they look like shit and rape your depth perception and now we have discovered a better way of doing things

Blue lights scatter further into the atmosphere compared to red lights due to Rayleigh scattering, meaning white LEDs produce more light pollution than orange lights given the same light output.

It's highly subjective, maybe I worded it wrong but what I meant were mostly the negative effects of monochromatic light on our depth perception
We have a few modes of depth perception one of which (not the only aspect at play, just an example) is chromatic abberation, when sodium-arc was a new technology back in like 1930s it was actually lauded by industry sponsored studies as a feature but as we researched more and understood our eyesight better we have came to a conclusion that it's actually a flaw and our previous data was pretty defficient
