We didn't know how good we had it with SATA SSDs. M.2/NVME is cheap shit that scales poorly and is inconvenient to access.
>>
>>107550426
SATA SSDs still exist but they're become expensive. Blame the Biden economy.
>>
>>107550426
chinks will fill the market gap with random NAND flash chips they harvest from landfills and put into SATA SSDs.
>>
>>107550469
SATA SSDs were always better value and cheaper until they conspired to phase out SATA on mainboards aroun 2019.
>>
>>107550481
Sounds like a circular economy that’s great for the environment. The EU should subsidize this.
>>
>>107550426
I still use sata. I don't want to buy more because it's the same price as NVME but I might.

Lost what?
>>
>>107550426
Fuck you samshit. I'm out of M.2 slots so I need sata drives. But right now there are only like 8 sata drives for sale brand new and they are all overpriced.

I guess I'll just have to buy some YMTC nand Chinese sata SSD from aliexpress in couple years.
>>
>>107551814
just buy an adapter or build an actual NAS.
>>
>>107551863
There are no adapters to put NVME drives to sata. And I already bought 3 m.2 to pcie adapters for my current pc. I'm out of pcie slots right now.

Those are for M.2 sata drives to 2.5" sata. Not for NVME drives.

M.2 is great for laptops and super small systems, NVMe is just a protocol.
>scales poorly and is inconvenient to access
There's already a standard that uses the NVMe protocol and a 2.5" form factor called U.2 but unfortunately it's almost exclusively in the enterprise space. U.2 also supports connecting SATA and SAS drives.
>>
>>107550426
if you filled all 8 sata ports on your motherboard for one raid 0 drive, it still would be slower than pcie gen 4
>>
You got what you wanted when you spent years shilling SSDs. Then you'd set the stage for dismissing concerns over PCIE lane use by letting developer faggots chime in.

Where did you think this was going?

>>107550426
what the fuck does 'scales poorly' mean

I have a fifteen petabyte lustre running on nvme

you're seriously advocating a RETVRN to 6gbps shit instead of storage that runs at maximum NAND speed on a direct pcie bus

get a job maybe before saying dumb shit
>>
>>107553878
Internal storage for my pirated games, also maybe installing a few stuff on it.
Also it's easier to access than SSD NVMe.
>>
>>107553913
>storage
We have HDDs for that
>>
>>107550426
M.2. is lowest common denominator shit that's adopted because of laptops
We shoulda gotten U.2. for desktops to replace sata instead
>>
>>107553913
you don't even need to unscrew the lid to get to these things

you just buy shit hardware and then get mad at the components?
>>

The pads are internal, connecting the chips to the metal case. Unless it's a really cheap and slow ones, same with NVMe.

You can't trim over USB, right? That's the real limiting issue for using SSDs over USB as primary storage.
You might be about to trim over Thunderbolt? But those drives are going to be more expensive, and at that point you might as well do what >>107554001 suggests and do U.2 breakouts to various U.2 drives.
My desktop currently has six M.2 SSDs in it, and I wish there was a lower cost platform for medium core counts and more than 24 PCIe lanes to the CPU. Something closer to the first gen or second gen threadripper, where you could get 16 cores if that's all you need, but still get 64 PCIe lanes.
>>
I would never trust Non-Volatile Memory to store my data. No matter how fast it can operate. Speed is not something you trade for data integrity.

You can. Was only a issue with cheap USB bridge chips turning SATA period.
Also you don't actually need to TRIM, TRIM is for performance, it won't change the longevity of the drive, the controller manages all that.

SLC+MLC ==/== TLC+QLC

I hate people who want cheap because they're globalists or will buy another piece of shit in 2 years rather than buying something good and having it last 5-10.

Fuck you people.
>>
>>107554149

Even with the same memory cell architecture. You faggots forgot how expensive SLC SSDs were and you can still get MLC NVMe SSDs even on the consumer market.

I have experience

you dipshit READ I just said I don't mind paying through the nose for something to last 5-10 rather than idiots who pay a third and buy another piss poor product in 2 years, creating this feedback loop
like QLC

>>
>>107554203
>>107554266

>>
>>107554266
>someone won't make money if you don't buy shit
And there's a market where people / corporations simply won't buy if they can't get the good product, so obviously there's people who make money off those people too...
You're surprised that the average consumer market state is cheapest for the most money.
>>
>>107554266
The tech is there and you can buy it, it just costs premium, what are you even complaining about? Nobody forces you to buy MLC.
>>
>>107550426
>We didn't know how good we had it with SATA SSDs. M.2/NVME is cheap shit that scales poorly and is inconvenient to access
You got that completely backwards. SATA M.2 media is more expensive and has terrible scaling. Which is why NVMe is even a thing.
>>
>>107554295
SSDs were barely consumer level for most of the time they used SLC.
>>
>>107554271
Find me a place to buy an 860 Pro new. If you say Amazon, then you love being scammed.
>>
>>107554132
if you knew the composition of a diodes PN junction you would agree. NVME uses transistors to make up the NAND architecture. Transistors are simply arranged diodes. the PN junction of each diode has a saturation point. when this point is reached your data becomes crap. Stick with a storage medium that lasts for decades instead of months to a few years.
>>
>>107554330
Why did you say " I don't mind paying through the nose" then?
>>
>>107554330

You can! depending on the storage. USB-Sticks/Flash drives can't, external NVMe/SSD/HDD can.
Picrel is an external NVMe SSD in a USB4 enclosure connected to a USB4 port of my motherboard.
