I recently got my laptop back after it was seized by the LEA. They found nothing since I had FDE using Truecrypt but now I'm worried if they tampered with my device or installed a backdoor. I have placed it inside of a faraday cage and I'm thinking whether I should get rid of it. My mom's also asking a lot of questions which makes me think the house has been bugged. Currently posting from my phone which hasn't been compromised. My parents foolishly allowed the agents to take my laptop without a search warrant while I wasn't home and now they're trying to make me confess for my sins. What should I do? I'm obviously getting a lawyer within the next few days, but does /g/ think my laptop is safe to use, or should it be destroyed?

the fuck did you do?
>>
>>107552340
I did nothing wrong
>>
>>107552318
1. What did you do?
2. What do they say you did?
3. Why don't I have a gf?
>>
>>107552414
are you a miner attracted person?
>>
>>107552435
>nothing illegal
>undisclosed. I don't know if I'm still under investigation or being watched or if what they did was entirely legal. I'll have to consult a lawyer first
>probably because you're on this site. it's not the only reason but it's a big one for sure
>>
Antisemitism IS illegal tho. You asked for this.

>>
>>107552472
no but for once I am glad that the schizos on /g/ helped me. I knew there was nothing wrong with truecrypt and that the constant veracrypt shilling meant it's probably backdoored. also the security audits by a (((former google employee))) showing it had 2 big vulnerabilities which were fixed in veracrypt, LMAO
>>
>>107552318
yes you are compromised nuke it all.
>>
>>107552318
>whether I should get rid of it.
always get rid of it
sell it on ebay

the analysis youre supposed to do is risk vs cost
and a good opsec is worth all the gold in the world
>>
>>107552536
that's what I thought but how should I buy a new one? if I'm constantly being followed or watched, aren't they going to preemptively backdoor every delivery I make?
I am not exaggerating or being a schizo about the stalking. Literally the only time I left my house in over a month, my laptop gets seized.
I have also limited my online usage until now.
>>
>>107552602
good observaton.
but if you buy your hardware in a store, in-person maybe you can go around that.
maybe even go to another city
they can follow you but wont know where you will get your new laptop, in advance
maybe buy something used in a pawn shop, something before the era of hw backdoors
it would be kinda messed up if you buy something specifically to evade surveliance only to buy an ex-spook, or already backdoored laptop. but it think its unlikely
>>
there's no reason for anyone, including governments, to do anything requiring secrecy on network connected communication devices

it'll all be globally public one day, the only task until then will be obscuring who/what/when/where/why
>>
>>107552720
i disagree.
it is important for a country to have control over, and insight into the communications of its citizens
you want to be able to catch pedos, criminals, gangs, murderers, subversives etc.

the problem lies in the control structures of western governments and the lack of incentive to actually serve to the people they represent
>>
>>107552751
you haven't contradicted my premise
>>
>>107552786
depends on the scope of secrecy
if the target knows their comms channel is comped, they will use alternatives, obviously
plus even now i think its common knowledge that secret services snoop on people's data
the feds do wiretaps since back when we still used wires
id say surveliance is not secret in its global scope since the public learned about the capability

what if they backdoored my home router as well?
or maybe they're getting live info from my ISP.
all tech shops near me could be compromised.
I guess my only option is to travel very far.
I could also format my hard drive and continue using my laptop. they couldn't have installed a hardware backdoor, right? I'm just not that interesting for them to waste so much time for potentially nothing to gain. besides, formatting my drive will wipe everything and I can continue using it for legal stuff only.
>>107552813
it's the only device I have which wasn't at my home during their search.
>>
>>107552318
Get a new laptop.
>>
Sighs.
Dude, if you're not a schizo and have compromised devices you use them as reverse honeypots.

That is, you look like a completely innocent, joe-jerkoff, vanilla, boring motherfucker you can.

They want you for technical knowledge? You're literally googling how to install a new browser or game emulator.

They want you for drugs? You only watch cooking channels and search for foreign snacks.

They want you for crypto and dark web shit? You're only watching sports channels in Youtube and google how to bet online.

They want you for some degenerate porn? You have a big crush on whatever celebrity is in fashion right now and her mildly risque pictures.

Hide in plain sight.

OPSEC and Tradecraft, dude, distract, misinform, redirect and use to your advantage. You now a valuable asset to deploy your own countermeasures.
>>
>>107552876
>what if they backdoored my home router as well?
>or maybe they're getting live info from my ISP.
they probably did both
>all tech shops near me could be compromised.
depends on how badly they want you.
depends how many tech shops there is around you
if the only seedy tech shop in a 20 mile radius has like 4 models on sale
and they want you quite bad
it is well possible their shit is compromised
if you live in jew york, the logistics of pulling something like that off kinda preclude something of the sort happening
too many model you could buy, too many possibilities for you to chose from, and all that would need to be done in secret. i dont think its happening

>I could also format my hard drive and continue using my laptop. they couldn't have installed a hardware backdoor, right? I'm just not that interesting for them to waste so much time for potentially nothing to gain. besides, formatting my drive will wipe everything and I can continue using it for legal stuff only.
i think its the best thing to do. just retire because they will always have an eye on you
but at certain moments their surveliance will be less pronounced
if its political shit youre kinda fucked. once theyre convinced you cannot do to them you'll be victim of a failed robbery, with the freak chance that this exact day all cameras in a 100m radius were out of order
>>
>>107552876
>what if they backdoored my home router as well?
get a new router.
>or maybe they're getting live info from my ISP.
encrypted tunnels
>all tech shops near me could be compromised.
go to a costco and grab a random computer. have possession of it the entire time and buy it. an entire commercial lot being hardware bugged just to get (you) is very unlikely and would be a bigger problem than whatever you've got going on.
>formatting my drives
only if you overwrite the data, and bad sectors could still exist, trust the software etc etc. if you insist on continuing to use your hardware, you'd be better off nuking the drives and replacing them with new ones.
>it's the only device I have which wasn't at my home during their search.
unless youre running graphene, you'd be very foolish to have complete trust in your mobile device being uncompromised.

>hey found nothing since I had FDE using Truecrypt
What reason do you have to trust this?

>Currently posting from my phone which hasn't been compromised
you think this, why?
Zero click exploits exist, and a common infection vector is shit like whatscrapp...

>What should I do?
What did/didn't you do?

>but does /g/ think my laptop is safe to use, or should it be destroyed?
It's likely safe. Your local plod are prolly not very computer savvy. If it's been long enough to have moved to someone competent, a decent investigation, and longer, be concerned.

If there was any hope of using that as evidence against you, they wouldn't have given it back. Unless it is compromised.

Legitimately, It's probably fine. But you prolly should treat is as per the GCHQ of invasion of the guardian offices. Tho on the other hand, if you leave it intact you can potentially begin to analyses any malware they leave behind.

When the police unlawfully destroyed the contents of my netbook and really failed hard in installing a backdoored OS I discovered the credentials they use to login are hardcoded. Which means I can now use any computer they've installed their malware on.
Dipshits.

I'm using grapheneos. even if I wasn't, it's still the only choice I have for an uncompromised device
>>107553093
>first of all your parents betrayed you, what are you gonna do about that
I don't think they did. They are fairly old and innocent(don't have anything to hide or care about opsec kind of mindset). I think they just got convinced that they're doing the right thing by a charismatic agent and forgot to exercise their rights.
>>107553113
>maybe she is the one recording you and gonna rat you out
she wouldn't do that. I know my parents and I love them. she is just worried like any mother should be.

well they returned, so I guess they got nothing on me?

dont let it go to your head.
you would need to be on the level of some snowden or something
but yeah, thats how shit gets done

and staying home wouldnt help.
home invasions are a thing
>>
dunno OP you seem a bit skizo.
Depending on the country secret surveillance on a citizen which is not formally accused of anything is something reserved for mafia / terrorism / cartel drugs / glowie targets. A judge must give authorization on some pretty substantial case
