Be honest anon, do you actually use the Home Row for touch typing how it was caught in school? Or do you just kind of get a feel for your keyboard and get good at correcting typos really fast like me? Do you think learning to Touch Type properly is worth it?
>>
>>107553711
look OP I know youre 14 and you really hate having to do typing proficiency when you kids only use ipads now, but once you get a real job you will actually need the skill

pro-tip fastest way to get good at touch typing is by shit-talking in counterstrike text chat
>>

this is the most zoomer post I've ever read
>>

Literally just stop looking at keyboard and start using at least 2 fingers. You dont need to follow any regiment and your muscle memory will develop. I type at 110wpm with 2 fingers from each hand and have no desire to go any faster.
>>
Yaaa I think it’s worth it. Especially learning properly. I mostly touch type by heart, but there’s a few bad habits I can’t break. It’s not so much about speed as it is nor wasting time and looking at like a noob while you hunt and peck each key. The part I fucked up was as a teen I learned on a numpad keyboard so I’m much slower typing symbols and numbers. Being able to take notes while someone is talking comes up a lot too. In general it’s just underrated.
>>
>>107553711
crazy that people think touch typing is a skill
>>
>>107553711
>do you actually use the Home Row for touch typing
Yes.
>do you just kind of get a feel for your keyboard
That's the point of the home row.
>>
My index fingers do 99% of the work while i'm typing. I never learned how to type properly and it might be too late to learn (and unlearn 26 years of muscle memory) now.
I average 80 wpm on those online tests so it's good enough.
>>
>>107553840
if it works then good for you but if i saw you doing that in real life i would assume you're retarded
>>
>>107553711

you've been sold lies
t. 150 wpm 99%
>>
>>107553877
You don't have to keep your hands stuck on the home row, you can move them...

Literally no you dont
This is me using all 10 fingers and going as fast as I can. I had to re-take the test a few times to do one without any errors and managed mid 80s on those. This time (again I had a little warm up) I got mid 90s.
You cannot be typing much faster than, idk 20 wpm with only two fingers.

Best advice i've ever read

I don't. My pinky permanently stuck at shift/ctrl while my ring finger covers both.
My WPM is around 60.
>>

I don't think so. You just have to want it. But you don't seem like you do.
>>
>>107553711
I "learned" touch typing by deciding that I would never again look at my keyboard while typing
That forces you to learn it. Same way I learned Colemak-DH, you just force yourself to use it full time.
>>
>>107553920
just came naturally to me playing games cause you had to look at the screen
definitely impresses people when i look at them and continue typing

pinkies on A and ;
ring fingers on S and L

you're supposed to find the f and j keys with your index fingers (there's a little physical bump on both keys) and then the rest of the fingers fall into place

I just tried typing like that, HOLY SHIT you must be a fucking masochist. I was able to get 50wpm but it feels so alien and I would quickly give myself RSI. I get 140wpm normally
>>
>>107553711
I knew proper homerow touch typing before they taught it to us in school. I guess education these days is that shit for zoomers now.
>>
>>107553840
okay i'm trying to write it with my index fingers only. It does kinda works, but i'm way slower and I fell stupid.
>>
>>107553985
I don't think about it at all, it's just muscle memory.
That's how we were taught typing in school in early 2000s
>>
>>107553740
this. I'm top 1% wpm typers and it's purely because when I was younger playing MMOs I'd type everything I needed to in the ~1.5s between spell casts
>>
>>107553877
Do you have baby hands or something? My first three fingers on both hands covers all letters and numbers. The pinky only comes into play when hitting modifiers or some occasional punctuation.
>>
>>107553711
i have a bit of a gamer hand
i don't use my left pinky for any typing, just for all the big special keys on the left
and my right ring and pinky do basically nothing
>>
>>107554039
Switched to Colemak-DH 3 years ago and love it. However, I have forgotten how to type properly on QWERTY. Now on the rare occasion I have to use someone else's computer I look like an old person who can't type properly. I still use QWERTY on my phone.
>>
>>107554142
no, for example OP's chart shows ; as pinky but it's natural for me to use my index there, i'd only use the pinky for ' or Return. i find that i actually naturally rest on F K more than the recommended F J because of how much easier access you get to specials
most autists like us will pick up a keyboard at six years old so once you get to school and they're teaching typing you've already got years old habits that are too hard to break at that point

nta but you kinda just type slow. My attempt using just two fingers for everything. Shift is a bit trickier/slower but not that big of a deal
Typing normal/'correctly' is usually a bit over twice as fast though
>>
>>107554272

my fault. I genuinely didn't look at it. OP's chart would only work for someone with really small hands.
>>
>>107553711
It only really clicked for me when I played wow. Having to do it under stress makes you learn better
>>
>>107554285
I absolutely do not believe either of you claims
A) You just type slow
No I dont
B) My attempt using just two fingers
No, you didnt.

No one believes you can reach these kinds of speeds using two finger hunt and peck. No idea why you're choosing to double down on this ridiculous lie on the internet (the technology forum none the less) where no one will think you're cool and also where we all know better.
Everyone here is using a keyboard, everyone here knows what "fast" typing is, and everyone here knows you cannot go that fast using 2 finger hunt and peck.
Now am I claiming to be some "fastest typer in the west" No. But hitting close to 100 wpm puts me squarely in the "faster than most other people and much faster than normal people" category. Just knowing how to touch type alone apparently puts me in the "much faster than normal people"
YOU just kinda just type slow if you can only manage 75 after God knows how many tries. But YOU definitely didn't do that with two fingers and you're not going to convince anyone who can hit 50wpm you did.
>>
>>107553956
Honestly this
>>
>>107554386
I did and that was admittedly the second try using two fingers not the first, first time I kept messing up and using other fingers
skill issue on your behalf if you don't believe it, I normally hit 160-180wpm. Try not being old, gramps
>>
>>107554386
nta but you underestimate the level of autist on /g/
many of us have been using computers all the time since we were little kids
>>
>>107554454
You didn't hit 70 with two fingers. You literally cannot convince me of that (maybe if you uploaded a video but you're not able to)
The literal fastest typers in the world can hit 150+. Some of those people are surely on this board. I'm not claiming to be one. You're not either. You showed you hit 75, which is faster than most people, but not as fast as me and you obviously didn't use fucking hunt and peck either.
>>
>>107553711
I learned touch typing at like 19 because I was never taught to in school. It didn't take too long and my wpm is like 80 now, which I know is nothing special, but it's good enough for me. It's not that my fingers are slow; I just make tons of mistakes (avg. 96% accuracy). If anyone has recommendations for good sites to practice common words, I'd appreciate it.
>>
>>107553711
I find the bumps with my pointing fingers and then I know the rest of the keyboard without looking.
Yes, I touch type with fingers on a home row. Use them all efficiently.

not a fun way to type and I messed up a little bit at the end, but not sure why you're making such a big deal of it. I very visibly look slow.
can post a second pic of results but it's 74wpm * 94% accuracy = 70wpm, not sure you'd believe it regardless of what I post tho
>>
>>107553711
I never understood this method. Why would I restrict my hands to one side of the keyboard?
I learned how to type by myself before "learning" in school so I always had this conflict.
>>
>>107554690
Because it's faster to press a key with a finger which is closest to it.
What are you retarded
>>
>>107554680

>>
I learned to type fast in AOL chat rooms. Took a "keyboarding" class in school and was taught home row. I still use it to this day. Also learned how to use a numpad which I also use. These skills are about as useful as driving a manual transmission in the current year, typing is on the way out.
>>

I use homerow touchtyping and comfortably type around 120 WPM

I used to handwrite essays, then go to the computer lab to type them up, and grind through it in like 5 minutes

i taught myself touch typing this year and i got pretty comfortable with it pretty quick. my accuracy is a lot better and it generally just feels a lot more satisfying. i really hate the mindset of sticking with what you know over what is better because its easier in your mind. if you are white you should feel embarrassed to be typing like a lazy uncivilized porch monkey

>do you actually use the Home Row for touch typing how it was caught in school?
I was literally not taught how to type in school at all. I'm a boomer so that was in the 2000s but it is still not part of the curriculum today.
I learned typing on my own but I only went by feeling rather than doing any exercise. I use all of the fingers, but I don't hit all the keys with the "correct" finger. I'm satisfied with my speed an accuracy, even though I'm far from perfect. I don't care about improving beyond this.

>>
>>107555032
get a stopwatch and time yourself, it's really easy to speak at 200wpm+, you probably just don't realize you're talking that fast
>>
I was taught touch typing in school. I had a low-IQ friend who was mad that I was able to touch type even though he went to the same class and owned a computer much earlier than I did.
>>
>>107553711
I chicken peck but I also use like a few fingers for shifts, thumb for space, etc. But otherwise like 92.5% of all my typing is done with only my two index fingers. I can only maintain like 105-115wpm without errors on sustained tests (5+ minutes), on bursts I can do about 144-150 with minor errors.
>>
>>107555255
Take the test this guy posted
>>107553895

I call bullshit on anyone claiming they can type that fast with just two fingers, it likely varies by the test you take, this test includes capitals and a lot of punctuation

So, slower than talking. Way to make a fool of yourself.
>>

I used to play a ww2 flight sim back in the day called Aces High
Learned to type fast one handed by shitposting with my left hand whilst my right was still on my flight stick
Hard to do these days because my HOTAS is two big and gets in the way

I used to type quick two handed, not the proper method but heavily biased to two fingers each hand
Ironically my typing skills have gone to shit since I became a coder
>>
>>107553711
I forced myself to home row for like a week
it has helped a lot and looking at what I'm typing is all I need to focus on now to prevent typos
I still favor wasd thoughever because gayming so I tend to scoot my index finger over to the f key's bump over and over again before I type lol
>>
>>107553711
>Be honest anon, do you actually use the Home Row for touch typing how it was caught in school?
Yes
>Do you think learning to Touch Type properly is worth it?
Anyone who spends a lot of time in front of a keyboard should learn to touch type properly, for most people it will be a massive speed increase.
>>
>>107553711
I used touch type the "proper way" but eventually started using alternative fingering for some combinations of keys.
If you look at the techniques of some of the fastest typists in the world basically none of them use completely standard technique.
Standard technique is fine if you are happy to be stuck at 120wpm but if you want to type really fast you have to get creative.
>>
>>107555771
That's how I type too
>>
I'm not a touch typist per the autistic home row definition but I am one in a literal sense in that I don't ever look at the keyboard.
Basically my left hand is stationary and resting on the desk while my right hand is hovering and moving. I get about 80 wpm like that.
I don't really have any issues with my technique but I could never get into something like Vim since alternating between keyboard and mouse just feels so natural.

To me it's not about how fast I type, but how effortless (and fun) it is. I mainly use the standard way shown in OP pic, but sometimes I use the left index finger for 'c', and the left middle finger for 't' if it comes after a 'g'.

Also, 30 second test with simple english words is not really useful since I also write a lot of code, so I did a 2 min test with rust code (I don't usually code in Rust, but it uses a lot of weird symbols). I'm more interested in being able to write consistent 60 wpm over half an hour, instead of short bursts of >100 wpm.
>>
>>107553711
I type about 80% properly. My left hand is pretty much perfect but I struggle with uiop and using right shift.
