I started typing in Dvorak over 15 years ago after someone on /g/ posted about it. I'm here to return the favor. You can type faster and better with Dvorak or Colemak.

>What is it?
Dvorak (duh-vore-ack) is an alternative keyboard layout. Instead of common key pairs being set apart so that typewriter hammers don't run into each other, Dvorak is optimized to group common key pairs on alternating hands, as well as make optimal use of the home row. There is more than 70% less finger travel when using Dvorak.

>Why use it?
People have different reasons, I used to have bad wrist pain from typing with bad posture. Switching to Dvorak eliminated that wrist pain for me and it never came back.

>Do you use it on phones or just full keyboards?
Just full keyboards. If you're just typing with your thumbs it doesn't make as much sense, and I like being able to switch between the two.

>Muh colemak!
Colemak is about 2% better than Dvorak. It only makes sense to learn one. I didn't know about Colemak when I started. I like that Dvorak has all the vowels next to each other but Colemak has more keys in common with QWERTY, improving the learning curve.

>Do you use it on phones or just full keyboards?
Everywhere. The alternating back-and-forth for dual-thumb typing is a benefit on soft keyboards.

With conversational "agentic AI" (*shiver*), it's going to be a sad future where a child no longer has to learn how to effectively type on a keyboard, just like how they're doing away with cursive handwriting. A sad future indeed!

I agree there's some benefit there, if I typed in colemak I'd probably use it on phones too. But for me the vowels all next to each other like aoeuiy makes it pretty annoying to use on a phone because instead of enjoying that nice rolling feeling it's more clunky, like what writing in qwerty feels like on a full keyboard.

I think writing in qwerty on a phone feels just as nice because there's very little home row benefit. As long as the fingers are alternating it's all the same to me. I'm sure that's why I still type >50WPM in qwerty on a full keyboard, too.

both dvorak and colemak suck
why the fuck are they reshuffling all those low priority keys instead of keeping shit from qwerty?

only QWERTZ makes sense for my language, too many accented characters lmao

I can use any standard keyboard.
I don’t need to fuck around with drivers and keyboard remapping software.
You should be learning Esperanto, too. So you can post in Esperanto forums with like individuals.

the ergonomic benefit is real, but there are so many better options now if you're going to do this.

certain stats may be more or less important to you. for example, some people optimize against single finger bigrams, whereas others may prefer to optimize against redirects.

I was doing 70-100+ WPM with my thumbs on Minuum keyboard in compact mode, Dvorak layout. Minuum is basically proprietary abandonware now. If anyone who can program in C/C++, and can reverse engineer Minuum enough to figure out how it worked to predict words from sloppy typing, please make a GPLed rip-off of Minuum for the world. Minuum was a goddamn jewel of an Android keyboard.

Get with the times, old man. We use chording keyboards now.

I thought about being a madman and getting the Maltron left-handed and right-handed only Dvorak keyboards, and using them both. Full alphabet under each hand, imagine the possibilities of touch-typing patterns people could learn to habituate typing the same thing!
>>
tempted to reprogram my keyboard that just does this
this is as little modification as you can make to the traditional qwerty layout while putting everything relevant on the home row

Ew why is your keyboard so plain, flat, small, and ugly?

> WPM
Are you a typist?
All this talk is from a bygone era.
wpm is not necessarily productivity.
You can be replaced with one of the word salad generators.

Moving the semicolon away from the home row seems like it would be annoying for programming.
>>
WPM is ultimately meaningless when you get to 60+, the reason why colemak or dvorak is good is because they minimize finger movement, making your typing much more ergonomic than if you are using qwerty

I didn't know custom keyboard layouts were a thing, I mean as in their own rabbit hole. I always assumed Dvorak or Colemak were isolated cases, like some weird niche options you could find in the keyboard settings of your OS. Anyway, I recently came across the Canaria layout, which is based off Canary (same thing but X and J keys are swapped).
https://github.com/christoofar/canaria
https://github.com/Apsu/Canary
Both, specially Canaria, seem like a good option for someone who types in both Spanish and English, so as a spic myself this seems something worth trying out.

There is honestly no good reason to learn Dvorak in this day and age. It is an improvement over qwerty, but there are significant improvements over it today. If you're taking the time and effort necessary to learn an autistic layout, learn a good one from the first try, there's no reason to settle for a compromise.
Those who can already type on Dvorak don't necessarily need to relearn a new layout unless you really have too much free time, but there's just no reason to pick it now if you're learning from scratch.

Colemak or Colemak-DH is the best layout if you want something widely available and without too much autism. It's basically good enough on most metrics and doesn't require autistic installation of custom layouts or ten hours of learning about layout stats and digging through autistic discords to find the optimal one.

I finally got a QMK compatible keyboard and I think tap for ( or ) and hold for Shift is a game changer.

Layout doesn't matter. One of the fastest typists (the fastest in the world not long ago) - mythical rocket - is typing on qwerty layout.

Is your sole goal with typing to be a competitive racer? I don't know about you but when I type I mostly care about spending the least effort and maximising comfort. That implies having a speed at least approaching speed-of-edited-thought but around 100wpm is adequate for that
