Buttfield-Addison, author of several books on Swift, found his Apple account closed after he attempted to pay for his iCloud subscription using an Apple gift card. Buttfield-Addison contacted the retailer, an unnamed "major brick-and-mortar retailer," which reissued the code after suggesting it may have been compromised. Shortly after that, he was locked out of his account. The Apple developer said that he's been signed out of iMessage, can't access his iCloud account, is unable to access terabytes' worth of family photos stored on Apple servers, and has basically been blackballed from the Apple ecosystem. "My iPhone, iPad, Watch, and Macs cannot sync, update, or function properly," Buttfield-Addison said. "I have lost access to thousands of dollars in purchased software and media." Apple support staff reportedly refused to to tell him why his account was banned and said that escalating the matter "won't lead to a different outcome." Even if Apple manages to resolve the issue, Buttfield-Addison isn't sure he's going to take another chance on iBiz after this kerfuffle. "I will leave as fast as I can even if this is fixed," he told us. "I do mean that literally." He told us he's looking at switching to Linux for his laptops and an Android device for his future smartphone. It'll be hard, Buttfield-Addison noted, but he doesn't feel Apple has left him with much recourse. "Yes, it'll be a shitshow, but how can I trust such an account again even if they fix it?" he told us.
Buttfield.

So how do you prevent Apple/Google fucking up your phone if they don't like you considering they own the entire mobile market share with Apple+Android?
>>107563894Use only phones that allow a physical sim card. Do use your phone for anything critical.
>>107563826I don't suggest he tried to scam, but the way the store might have mishandled the procedures regarding gift cards. Apparently they reissued another one, it is unclear if he got a chargeback then bought another one. If in smaller amounts there might have a three-strike rule, but not sure for a quite vast amount like $500.
>>107563489>Advertise iCloud service in exchange for money>Receive money>Advertise service to help users with iCloud>Give users advice which will violate ToS>Brick user account, refuse to elaborateWhat a wonderful business model Apple has. There is no deceptive practice here. I am sure their ToS and conduct supersedes any consumer protection legislation.
>>107563934This is messed up though when it comes to banking apps, basically these companies can partially lock you out of banking if they don't like you by deactivating your account and now banking apps can't update via play and app store anymore. Needs regulation. Of course you can always do banking in real life or on a desktop but still. And what happens if desktops become largely locked down and at the whims of two big tech companies like phones?
>>107563949you are beyond brain damaged if you think apple or any other company goes around banning people's accounts gaining something from it.every single service will ban you permanently and automatically if you do any kind of chargeback or a credit card you used on it was reported as stolen or something.

Oh no consequences! I love this so much. >>107562691>redeem gift cardWhy is it that when I see this sentence, Indians always come to mind even though in reality they are white people? If you want to buy something, I don't think you should rely on something like a gift card or coupon, they give terms and conditions and then change the conditions at will, and this is the result

I remember reading this off Hacker News. Why has nobody asked the obvious question - Why was he buying gifts cards to pay for things he uses for work in the first place? There is literally no reason to do this, and his story clearly states that he bought it - it was not a gift. There is something he isn't saying, which is why Apple is not backing down (he has appealed via their executive appeal program).

Surely it wouldnt be too difficult for apples and googles to figure out how to block 1 action from a user they think is actually illegal but let them have access to family photos and email or whateverI mean they must have different levels of response because we dont see constant stream of articles of accs being blocked but why does it happen at all
