Marketers are struggling because companies have ruined trust in their brands and now they're looking for ways to reconnect to consumers without upsetting anyone about anything. Their internal marketing departments are less than worthless, unable to come up with anything that isn't pushing some social agenda that turns off a large market segment. What they want is a magical story that will connect positive emotions with their brands in the minds of consumers. Society is too divided for that to work on a large scale and if they try segment marketing, other segments see that marketing as a negative against them.
