From someone who has trained a ton of shit, please don't listen to this anon. It entirely depends on what your dataset is, what model, what other training parameters, etc.

Benefits of low res training (e.g. 512) vs high res (1024+):
1. trains way fucking faster
2. inherently more "stable" at learning the overall structure of the images since high-frequency details don't dominate
3. can often get away with using a shittier dataset since things like JPEG artifacts, AI upscaling artifacts (if your dataset has them) aren't as prominent
4. the model might work best at 512 anyway (Chroma-Base)

If you have a very high quality dataset and are willing to wait longer, mixed 512/1024 is probably best. Otherwise, always default to 512 only, at least at first.

Depends on your training script of choice, I use Diffusion Pipe and there the resolutions are a list, you have have multiple in the config file, and it will scale your images to each one.

i ensure all my training images are at least 2K pixels on either side and dont worry about anything else

some small problems on only some of the images cant be anywhere near tanking the model performance quality to any degree compared to the insane benefit of literally having 4 fucking times more details from training at 1024 res

training at 512 shits on the model details no matter your dataset, since all models are tuned to generate at more than only 512x512

try remaking your lora that you already trained on mixed res with only 1024 and see

I have done exactly this.

It was a dataset of a niche fetish concept, I got almost all images from a single uploader on ImageFap. Most of the images were already sent through Topaz AI upscaling, leaving weird melty smooth artifacts on them. Unfortunate, but it would be very difficult or impossible to to track down the original low res source of all these hundreds of images.

For this particular shitty quality dataset, 512 is so much better than 1024 or mixed res, especially for a model like Chroma. And even for higher quality datasets (like some anime images), it's very hard for me to tell the difference of 512 training vs 1024+. And the 512 is like 4 times faster to train.

Obviously if you are training something like a realistic skin texture lora you need high res images. That's why I said it depends on your dataset. But I firmly believe that with modern DiT architecture models, you should default to training at 512.

BTW, the "ultra realistic detailed Chroma textures" that everyone seems to love, are almost entirely due to the choice to train at 512 resolution. Nobody seems to understand this, or the reason why.

damn... just realized I've been genning for 10 hours straight but only just 255 images. Chroma is just too slow but addicting because of the dice rolling of high seed variety.

i mean if most of the dataset is literally shitted up majorly by bad upscaling then that might be a time where its better to lower the res, but this is an insanely niche case, even most upscaled images are fine, let alone most datasets whose images never got upscaled at all, even then i would just do 768

For zimage especially its best to only use the res your dataset its at since it loses a lot of its details otherwise
