It was better than cable and WAY better than dialup (you would be a a Low-Ping Bastard in Quake games) but FiOS is faster still
>>
This part here is what makes it "sovl".
No router. No NAT. One device with public IPv4.
Best thing about it is it can still be done today.
>>
>>107575582
my parents just got off shit ass 6mbit/384k (really 3mbit/384k) DSL last month. they're now on gigabit fiber.
>>
>>107579541
i guess it depends on where you are from, but here as far as i can remember you were always provided with a router/modem combo device by the ISP
you can put it in bridge mode if you want and it will pass on the public IP to whatever device is connected to it , but why would you want to do that for anything other than another router

>>107579550
i'm rural and since the last government initiative to build fiber for areas where there's no commercial interest to do so fell through because the company that won the contract fucked up i won't be getting fiber anytime soon
my speeds aren't that bad because i'm close to the DSLAM but 25 mbit down and 1 mbit up is still fucking atrocious

thankfully, it's currently acting as my backup connection and my primary is 4G (have antennas installed on my roof) and i'm getting around 150 mbit down and 10-15 mbit up, i still want more upload speed to host shit from home..

i'm thinking about getting starlink since you don't even have to pay for the equipment anymore and it just gets leased to you but i really want to avoid giving money to musk and it's not like it's gonna be a big upgrade bandwidth wise to what i already have
>>
>>107575225
>was
Still have it. All the normies in the building use cable while I enjoy my stable connection (except I have bufferbloat or something, whenever I download something my games start lagging, despite high enough bandwidth)

I don't have fiber running to my house and 4g and 5g suck ass. Eh, it's still alright, I get a solid 120 mbps on it.
>>
>>107575225
If we're talking VDSL (where the phone line is only <500m long, ending at a powered cabinet with fibre uplink) then it's still usable. You can get 80/20 with a short line, sometimes more with vectoring. Latency tends to be decent and predictable so it can be a better option than HFC cable depending on your needs.
Traditional DSL/ADSL (copper all the way to the exchange) is completely out of the question of course. If that's all you can get then you're better off with starlink.

Thankfully most areas of most countries have fairly advanced PON fibre rollouts by now.

>>107579990
>rural
Any chance of cooperating with nearby farmers and running your own fibre? It's not a cheap or easy thing to do but it's possible, people have done it.
>>
>>107579990
In Germany it's common to pull 300Mbit/s over (V)DSL(2).

funny how the us invented the internet and still has to cope with dsl and cable
>>
>>107577299
Blame the gubment for not putting telcos against the wall and telling them to dig or get shot.
>>
>>107575225
VDSL + twisted pair landline would be so awesome, but it's just too uneconomical, and the actual PTSN itself is being phased out in favor of packed-switched fiber.
Some countries have already switched off their PTSN complete.
>>
>>107582143
>Blame the gubment
Hmm. Daddy gubment save me, something something?

An alternative way to view this issue is the consumer re-inforced the viability of the business so why *should* they upgrade? They can still sell this existing hardware that has already paid them back 400x in the 80's.
Profit!
