Switched recently after using Atom for the past 5 years and it's pretty comfy so far
how much ram does this needdoes it have aidid it ask for firewall permissions
>>107579741>not using an editor that is a language in itselfngmi
>>107580055500MB with some things openYes but can be completely disabled with one sliderNo
>>107580066emacsGODs win again
>>107580195>500mb for editing plain textabsolute insanity
>>107580221It is what it is but it's still better than the alternatives
>>107580221i looked around recently for some stuff that would help me write todos, private wiki, that kind of thing, all these apps are like this, hundreds of megabytes of ram for almost pure fucking text, and what's even worse they consume cpu when idlewho writes this shit
>>107580251What about Notepad++Also I want a discoverable UI with toolbars and buttons, not this "you're supposed to know the names of all commands, here's a search window" bullshit
>>107580278>who writes this shitBrown hands
>>107580347kate?not exactly lightweight but compared to webshit jank it's anorexic
>>107580347>What about Notepad++Doesn't work on Linux and the creator is a faggot
>>107579741Hello, sir. This is an extremely organic thread, sir. Shilling an AI product disguised as a productive IDE built on a very over-hyped and heavily politicized programming language. I’m pretty sure a lot of trans people will use your IDE.
>>107580438Works fine with WINE. I don't care whether the creator is a faggot, lots of people are faggots but at least THIS fag isn't actively working to enslave humanity, like MS and OpenAI are
>>107580453You forgot to mention BBC and Russia/Ukraine.
>>107580221It's 325mb on my system but I'm using Arch Linux. It's doing way more than just editing text though, this is pretty much a full IDE.
>>107580055>how much ram does this needpic related. running a bigger react project right now>does it have aiyes but you either use the slider in the settings or write a one-liner in the settings.json"disable_ai": true,>did it ask for firewall permissionsnope
"disable_ai": true,
>>107579741>client-side decorationsGross.
Buy a fucking ad
>>107579741I tried Zed. It's okay. Wouldn't use it for big projects or actual languages though. Much rather just use JetBrains IDE
>>107580831>node.jsnot this shit againI mean, I'm not fundamentally opposed to making html UIs for desktop, but WHY node/javascript, jesus f. christnode_modules murders drives, and remember we will have shortages soonI hope node devs will have the pleasure of developing on HDDs in the future
>>107580984>Wouldn't use it for big projectsI am using it at work with a bigger project we are on at the moment, with our own big full-stack library and everything works fine. we are a startup so everybody is using different editors here, webstorm, vscode and zed.>>107581019on my personal projects I am using yarn which doesn't have the regular node_modules bloat on my system. Zed is using node for stuff like the integrated Prettier or LSP
>>107580984I'd like to keep using clion and rider but not only it uses 5GB of ram with a small c project open but it constantly lags and every update seems to make things worse while introducing more AI shit while ignoring everything else. I'm unfortunately heavily considering moving everything to vscode or zed or something similar instead
>>107580201Best part about emacs is all the different ways it can get you a shell. It was the default editor for a CRM system at an old job. None of the admins really understood the system well so they didn't realize they needed to configure emacs to not allow users to get a shell. I didn't show them the hole until right before I quit to go to university.
>>107579741it has zero good themes they all suck
>>107579741Wrong zed.
>>107580221Incorrect, it's https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4JkIs37a2JE .More seriously though: It's an IDE, not a plain-text editor. If you want plain-text, get Notepad or whatever the Loonix version is (Micro?)
>>107581646Visual Studio 6.0 has its own integrated compiler and debugger, instead of just talking to an external one, RAD tools and extensive documentation, was bloated as fuck for the time but still uses much much less RAM than this piece of shit.
>>107581646Here's the loonix version.
>>107581463>nooo not my hecarino themes
>>107581714I had to make my own vim theme for the same reason. All the themes suck. The ones that don't, don't match my theme. There are virtually no good themes on a black background.
>>107581711>>107581577How is it that loonixtards manage to have such fucked up font rendering and sizes?
Did they fix the font rendering or add bitmap fonts yet?
It's good but /g/ will bitch it uses more than 5mb of ram and avoid it.
>>107581771No they did not. You'd think a program where the primary purpose is to display text, would do so correctly.Seems like it just was assigned to someone at least: https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/7992
>>107579741>using Atom for the past 5 yearsgrim
>>107581806They are probably using the "rust" font rendering stack to get more woke points.
>>107581770That's mostly an issue with the alacritty terminal and this particular font. I use the vim-style keyboard controls of alacritty, particularly the visual block selection, and the ability to use incremental search on scrollback. Alacritty spreads the character apart, and by shaving out the extra space in the cell, it takes things like icons, and smashes them into the cell. Alacritty also doesn't step fonts up and down, in size, in a normal way. It fucks that up, too. It's a small price to pay for how easy it is to press ctrl+shift+space, and basically use vim's visual mode on everything. Here's a comparison of vim's visual block selection and alacritty's (see image). Since alacritty uses the cells in the terminal window regardless of whether or not they are occupied by a character, I can select any rectangular area and copy it.
>>107580055not much probably>>107581019>html UIthat anon is an anti-shill or something, its a custom rust UI
>>107581843I think they rolled their own and got butthurt when some guy posted patches to use the system-provided FreeType or HarfBuzz or something like that.
>>107581860>sTreet-shitter Query
>>107581843>"rust" font rendering stackNo such thing
>>107581954Obsessed
>>107580221Zed itself uses very little RAM when editing plain text (20MB or so and most of that is the UI library). The language servers are what uses all the RAM and that's pretty much the same across all editors since they mostly use the same language servers.
>>107581714themes are important if you have bad eyes a bad theme hides nearly everything from you. A simple light theme isn't much to ask for even fucking kate could do that.
>>107581806what makes you think sharpness is a metric?
Agentic ide sars!
>>107581019Zed isn't written in JavaScript and doesn't use any web technologies to render its UI. The node processes are the language server and that's only active because he has a React project open.
