I'm thinking of building a computer with this... is it a good choice? I need something extremely fast and cheap. I'm opening an office and need a relatively powerful computer with Linux Mint...
>>107580488which xeon you fucking retard
>>107580547You tell me? I see them on eBay for €6
>>107580547First of all, you're the retard, LOLI was thinking about the 2650 V4.Any other ones you could recommend?
>>107580560That's incredible! Even though they're already in use and all, I think they would be very valuable for my office. I also want to build a server in the future... but that's a topic for another time.
E5 - 2680 V4 might be a better choice.
>>107580488 Comfy mini pc with n150 is all you need for office pc
>>107580488>opening an office>linuxpick one
>>107580560i can sell you a 10400F + motherboard for 15€comes with 2 ram sticks but they're different models
I have a 14900ks and it cooks everything else on the market desu
>>107580488>and need a relatively powerful computerFor?
>>107581336including itself
>>107582096I wanted to buy something powerful so I wouldn't have to replace anything for a long time, and that time will be quite long since it will only be used in an office. I generally use a lot of demanding programs on the PC and I'll also have to control the security cameras in the office.
>>107580488I used to use 2650 V2 on a dual socket motherboard. The CPUs are cheap but that's because the server motherboards for them are in shorter supply (basic economics, they are complementary goods). The single-threaded performance is poor but stability is rock solid. Never had a problem with Windows the whole time I used it - this was Windows 7 btw.If you're gonna be running something 24/7 or have cheap energy costs in your country, I would recommend.
>>107582379>I generally use a lot of demanding programs on the PCExample programs/workloads?>I'll also have to control the security cameras in the officeThat should be seperate hardware. It should be doing that one task, and nothing should be able to get in it's way. Use the computer to interface that, at which point, as long as it can display the graphical output....
>>107582379>>107580488What's the Xeon market look like today? Xeons based on the 1st gen i7 were dirt cheap 10-12 years ago, hence I was rocking an X3450 until 2020 (which would still be totally fine for most office stuff even now). The caveat with Xeons though is that motherboards this old are often expensive, especially if the CPU in question requires a server motherboard. I wouldn't trust aftermarket motherboards from China since they all have Xi Jinping backdoors.Anyhow, Mint is pretty outdated, so if you're trying to use demanding programs you'll have a hard time because:>(A) the versions you want are probably too new to be in the Mint repo>(B) the whole driver and even desktop setup of Mint is too old to deliver an optimal level of performance. Still no Wayland in December 2025!!!Even out-of-the-box Debian will provide a better experience than Mint. But I reckon for office computers you might want to use OpenSUSE Leap (not OpenSUSE Tumbleweed):>gets major updates once a year>low RAM footprint>YaST will give you incredible control over everything, which will be great for setting up your cameras>super easy to backport a newer kernel>doesn't force you to use Cinnamon
>>107582522>aftermarket motherboards from China since they all have Xi Jinping backdoors. You can ofc provision evidence of this?>doesn't force you to use CinnamonYou can ofc provision evidence that this is the only choice available for mint and the only possible option to ever use?
I didn't know these things about Mint; when I read about it, it seemed perfect and safe.Regarding motherboards, I intend to use one of these MACHINIST MR9A PRO X99 or Qiyida x99 LGA2011-3.For the video card, I would use a very simple one... maybe a 1030TI.It was great to hear about the 2650; is there anything else you'd like to share about it? Is it worth getting the 2680/90 just because they're almost the same price?I have some ECC RAM at home; maybe I'll use that.
>>107582591>provision evidence
>>107582681Frogposting retard.See. You can provision evidence. That wasn't hard now, was it?Now everyone can see it's best to instantly discard your opinion.
>>107582756What is wrong with using a frog? A humorous visual is certainly much better for articulating oneself than broken English.
>>107580488These old xeons are absolute dogshit. A 12th gen i3 obliterates them in everything and doesn't need 120w. The only reason you would be buying an old xeon its because your Indian.
>>107582771All it "articulates" is that you're a frog posting retard with nothing tangible to input. Just like all the other frog posting retards. It's why you felt like this was the look for you.
>>107580560Could be anything from LGA775 to 2011-3. 2011-3 is a good choice but make sure you acquire a motherboard with the SQUARE ILM and not narrow. There's about 0 narrow ILM support with coolers, some AM3/4 coolers with native socket support (i. e. without own backplate) can be attached with a plastic adapter bracket. So better to avoid narrow ILM.Also, there's a lot of chinkshit motherboards, they can be quite good and offer USB 3 support plus NVMe boot and some even feature IPMI. There's a lot of resources on them in Russian, you in particular can play their roulette and order the first lot from Aliexpress.
>>107582818>A 12th gen i3 obliterates them in everythingExcept having 1TB of RAM which could've been obtained for pennies just last summer.
>>107580488>is it a good choice? Not really unless you absolutely need the ECC.
>>107583106>>107583093>>107582522One thing I also noticed is that these Xeon processors (focusing on RAM) officially support DDR4 up to 2400 MT/s, meaning it's pointless to use the 3600 MT/s RAM I have... This will theoretically make it slower. I also think that NVMe won't exceed 4000 MB/s because the slot and chipset are PCIe 3.0.
>>107580488Xeons that use regular desktop sockets like 1155, 1150 and 1151v1 are literally the same i5s/i7s minus the iGPU in most models, 1151v1 has a small caveat of Xeons working only on server chipsets, which can be fixed by modding mobo's BIOS.For sockets 2011 and 2011-3 there's not much to pick from, most of Xeons for those sockets have very low frequency, plus motherboards aren't worth it (unless you get a prebuilt like HP Z420), and no, you should not bother with chink boards.
>>107583227I would use it because that's what I have a lot of lying around the house unused... and it's all DDR4.
>>107583341Now is the time to sell it.
>>107583071What is wrong with using a frog?
>>107584291it's a right wing dogwhistle
>>107584305>bringing politics into a thread about hardwareNGMI
>>107583328>plus motherboards aren't worth itI got 2 supermicro X10DRI boards for ~$80 a piece.I'd consider that worth it
>>107584291Hmm. Maybe it's the fact that it only accompanies the lowest hanging fruit of opinions, frequently accompanied by a complete failure to think through a premise to logical conclusion?
